Drogba fulfils Chelsea dream

Striker scores decisive penalty after Bayern rue missed chances

Didier Drogba tucked away the decisive penalty as Chelsea fulfilled a long-standing ambition to win the UEFA Champions League after a thrilling shoot-out victory over Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena.
Bayern had numerous chances to wreck the dream of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, manager Roberto Di Matteo and his players, and even led 3-1 in the shoot-out after goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had scored.
But Ivica Olic and Bastian Schweinsteiger both failed from the spot to allow Drogba, on potentially his final appearance for the club, to step up to erase the heartache of Moscow four years ago.

Thomas Muller's 83rd minute header had earlier appeared likely to give Bayern victory on their home ground, only for Drogba's stunning riposte to send the game into extra-time.
Drogba blotted his copybook by conceding a penalty early into extra-time, only for Petr Cech to deny Arjen Robben and the veteran Ivorian, who was sent off in the final against Manchester United in 2008, completed his redemption by maintaining his composure in the shoot-out.

Di Matteo sent Chelsea out with a game-plan to contain Bayern and, for the most part, the policy worked as Jupp Heynckes' side sought to pick holes in a resolute defence.
Midway through the first half, Robben wriggled into space inside the box, but the former Chelsea winger was denied by a smart reaction stop from Cech, who diverted the ball onto the post.
Mario Gomez, who had scored 20 goals in his previous 17 Champions League appearances, was enduring a frustrating night and he skied over just before half-time as Bayern remained the dominant force.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first as a marginal offside decision against Franck Ribery went Chelsea's way when the French winger turned home the loose ball after Robben's shot had been blocked by Ashley Cole.
The Blues full-back appeared to be a magnet for the ball inside the box, but a momentary lapse from Cole allowed Bayern to take the lead with seven minutes to go.
Toni Kroos curled in a cross from the left and Cole seemed unaware of Muller's presence behind him at the back post as the Germany international's header bounced down and over Cech before going in off the underside of the crossbar.

Bayern brought on Daniel van Buyten in a bid to shut the game down, but were punished with two minutes left when Drogba powerfully headed home at the near post from Chelsea's first corner of the game.
Drogba looked primed to go from hero to villain three minutes into extra-time when he tripped Ribery in the box, but Cech spared the striker as he kept out former team-mate Robben's low penalty.
Cech was again on song in the shoot-out to thwart substitute Olic and Schweinsteiger before Drogba sent the travelling Chelsea hordes into raptures.

This.
And Zvonareva, hell, even Novotna is clutch next to Robben in finals. I couldn't believe they let him kick that penalty in OT. :o

BTW I think it was 22-1 Bayern in corners (after 25 minutes they already had 7). Never seen anything like that in my life.
Of course they didn't do nothing with them, while Chelsea made the most out of their only one in the 88th minute.

Drogba saved match point by scoring late in regulattion, and won the tie breaker 7-5.
Drogba was Serena today, he was not going to denied.

Don't care what you Englisg posters here say, we love him in Cote d"Voire and the entire continent of Africa, including the Maghreb

Well that`s football, it not rarely happens that matches take a tragic currency like that.
Football clearly lost tonight and every possible thing came together to make this happen.

Bayern too careless about all their chances.
Best player Müller of the pitch and the wrong tactic in the last few minutes of the regular time.
And why on earth they let shoot Robben this penalty in overtime ?
Anyway, Drogba, Terry and some other guys really deserve it towards the end of their career.

Many young africans look up to Drogba as a role model.
Especillay for this reason. Atlhough he joined his uncle at a very young age in France, unlike other Africans, he chose to play for Cote D'Ivoire.
He made them proud

Drogba lauds Chelsea spirit

Didier Drogba and Petr Cech

Didier Drogba hailed his side’s never-say-die spirit after helping Chelsea claim the Champions League for the first time in their history.

The Blues beat Bayern Munich 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out after the final at the Allianz Arena had finished 1-1 after extra-time. Drogba struck the winning penalty having also headed home an 88th-minute equaliser to cancel out Thomas Muller’s opener for Bayern five minutes previously.
“They never give up until the end. This team is amazing,” Drogba said of his team-mates before the Ivory Coast international added on ITV: “It was written, I think, a long time ago. I want to dedicate this cup to all the managers we’ve had before, all the players I’ve played with before.”

Drogba also hailed the performance (http://www.shropshirestar.com/uk/uk-sport/2012/05/19/drogba-lauds-chelsea-spirit/#) of goalkeeper Petr Cech, who saved a penalty from Arjen Robben in extra-time and then also played a key part as Bayern missed twice in the shoot-out. He added: “When we have this guy in goal you have to believe.”

Frank Lampard hit one of Chelsea’s four successful penalties and the 33-year-old, who joined from West Ham in 2001 and captained them tonight in John Terry’s absence, savoured the club’s glory night.
He said: “I can’t believe it. The determination we’ve shown… we didn’t play fantastic but the main man Didier dug us out of trouble there.
“He’s a hero. Without him we’re not here. He scores the goals in the big games.”
Lampard said of Drogba, who is out of contract this summer: “I’d love him to stay. What he did tonight he’s been doing all his career.”
Of the club’s triumph, Lampard said: “It means everything. We’ve been so many years trying to do this. This is the one we really wanted and we’ve got it.”

Asked whether the win should lead to interim manager (http://www.shropshirestar.com/uk/uk-sport/2012/05/19/drogba-lauds-chelsea-spirit/#) Roberto Di Matteo being given the job permanently, Lampard said: “It’s not a question for this moment. He took us from a struggling team maybe going out of the Champions League and we won it, so look at that.”

Anyone?
Maybe Lahm, who scored in both shoot-outs vs Real and tonight?

Yeah Drogba is a winner, but Bayern lost that one, just like Barça in the semis, much more than Chelsea's bunker won it.

Those comments that it's bad for football  Moscow 2008 is for me for good forgotten ! Fan of Chelsea FC since 1997 and at that time I never imagined we could win the Champions League one day : the day has come ! I'll enjoy every minutes of this night ! The lads like at Barcelona being touted as underdogs : fought like Lions, showed desire, team spirit : We deserve the Champions League !

Lahm scored vs Real?
My mistake :o For some reason I misremembered him as taking the first kick there too.
Okay, so Gomez scored in both. And I'd still choose any other player before I let that mega-choker take that penalty.

Btw Petr Cech could also get the MOTM award : Stopped 2 penalties and did a magnificent job ! So Over the moon, I can't stop of being delighted ! Going to eliminate Barça at their home when being down to 10 men for more than a half was an extraordinary achievement and now beating Bayern Munchen in their stadium ! I admit we were lucky but we have made years where we were very unlucky ! Don't want to get out of the dream I'm living now !

And congrats to Roberto Di Matteo for his work during 3 months and 1/2 : What a legend ! Pls Roman, give Roberto another contract : He deserves it.

We were the "better" team but I can't say that you didn't deserve to win... football is about scoring goals after all.

Cech and Neuer both played a great match. Cech was in the right corner on all 6 penalties.

I am not really a fan of either team, I just root for individual Cote D'Ivoire players in different clubs.

Originally from Cote D'Ivoire but now live in the US, I try to follow football as much as I can.
I must say, you are a fair and reasonbale fan, some other posters seems so hostile and besides themselves that Chelasea won the match, I don't understand it.

Whatever happen to fighting hard until the end; which Chelsea today, but for some reason it is frown upon by some posters here.
Americans appreciate that kind of never give up and fight until the end attitude.

Drogba is a great player and I was really suprised at how he talked to Schweinsteiger and Robben after the match. :yeah:

No reason to be a sore loser if the winner (or other fans) don't give me a reason to be one. ;)

I don't agree that the result is "bad for football" but I can understand the posters who think so. Chelsea did close to nothing for most of the 120 minutes, they only had 1 corner and 2 shots on goal... efficient :p :sobbing:

Lots of people referring to Chelsea's "never give up" and "fight to the end" attitude, I saw no fight for the 120 minutes here and for the majority of both legs vs Barca. Parking the bus isn't that difficult, certainly not with an Italian manager.

Boring, boring Chelsea.

Because Chelsea have been focusing on FA Cup and Champions League and basically tanked the last couple of Premier League matches. They actually still have chance to finish 4th, even 3rd but chose to focus on the FA and Champions League as they can still win the trophy for those competitions. And it paid off. :worship:

Chelsea just exposed once more Barcelona's and Bayern's one dimensional games.

Chelsea defended well attacked when it was required and had such a solid midfield through the course of the Champions league, Chelsea won the trophy fare and square :yeah:.

Having lost 3-1 against Napoli, playing without Terry in that Semifinal match against Barcelona and now playing the final without Terry,Ramires,Meireles and Ivanovic which are all starters of the team and you guys still think Chelsea didn't deserve to win this .

Yeah, but it doesn't change the fact that the defending champion has a place in the following season's champions league. So Chelsea earned their spot by winning the title ;)

Too bad for Tottenham, they changed the rule about limited spots per country.
