Apart from one game where venus hit 3DFs she played that second set really well. Avenged the charleston defeat.

Not a very good match unfortunately :help:

There were a few good rallies, but Sam's BH was terrible, shanking shots everywhere and Venus's serve was patchy but still good for Venus to be able to get through :D

GL in the next round against Masha/Ana :yeah: and please play better next round Venus

Good luck against Venus/Makarova in the next round :sobbing:
Sam will wipe the floor against either of them ;) So don't worry :)

Venus was the better player today and definitely deserved to win. She adjusted to the conditions way better.

Sammy was a mess. She seemed to hardly get a first serve in, and her BH was very dodgy. I hope it doesn't affect her confidence at RG too much

Vee Williams

Venus' movement is the factor here in Rome. She is FINALLY moving close to her former self. She still has moments but her movement is almost 100%. Plus, she played an incredibly smart match. She went to Sam's forehand to open the court and then would attack the backhand relentlessly. Venus is a horrible matchup for Stosur.

And most importantly - Venus is 99.999999% in the Olympics now barring a deep run by both King and Lepchenko in Paris.

Keep it up Vee! NOW YOU CANNOT LOSE TO MARIA (if she beats Ajde)

Great match from Venus:worship:, not so great from Sam.

Venus did everything better than Sam today: she served better, she moved better, she hit the ball much more cleanly and precisely. Sam really needs to pick up her game if she wants to have a chance at the French:(

Horrible match in which they spent most of the time shielding themselves from the wind blowing the clay into their eyes, but the last 5 games were very, very good from Venus.

There are some encouraging signs that she is slowly improving, but she just needs to keep on working hard. And also fix the serve.

OMG Sam :tape: Well done Vee but losing to Vee on red clay :o :tape:

Even with a R4 from Vania in RG, Vee would have to lose in the first round to be passed.

But given her ranking its very possible she could catch a bad draw in the 1st round. On the other hand it would be a very bad draw for any top ranked player who draws Venus in the 1st round. It's funny how often people want to write Venus off. When will people learn??

She's showing gradual improvement in all aspects of her game since her first match back till now. She attacked the mess out of the Stosur backhand, and was hitting with some great spin.

I'm kind of confused by Sam though, not sure what her strategy was. She was going for broke on pretty much everything.

This is true and people shouldn't expect it to be much different just because Stosur's good on clay (Also, Venus is underrated on clay)

This is a HUGE win! I'm so shocked, watched the first set, Venus was ALL over a subpar Stosur. Still some weaknesses, but overall a solid first set. I need to watch the second set it seems! She came back from 1-3 right? This woman!

So so shocked, literally didn't expect this :crying2::crying2:

She has a real chance in the QF against two players she is VERY comfortable with. I want Maria in the next round for sure.

Was not expecting Venus to win today. Beating Maria is very possible.

Oh Please! Venus is gonna beat that SLOW A-ZZ BALL BASHER. Why do you think Haleup and Stousar was put in Venus' round so early?

The WTA knows just what they are doing. They put all of the players who have beaten Maria (like Serena, Kavitova, Azarenka, Li and others on the opposite side of the draw) to up her chances of making it to the semi's and the finals.

Venus had Haleup and Stousar in hopes that they would knock her out before she meets Maria. Haleup was suppose to take her to three sets, and Stousar was suppose to take Venus out today to set the matchup for Maria and Sam. They know that Maria can bash her way through Sam, but Venus is gonna beat her with ease just like she did Ana Ivanovic.

Maria is ALL HYPE that is coupled with RIGGED DRAWS to ensure she makes it to the quarters, semi's and possible final rounds.

The WTA has been ensured that those players who has beaten Maria will not be put in her path until the second week of a tournament or until the semi's or finals. They are still trying to fix it so their GREAT WHITE HOPE will win.

Marcus1979

Looking good in Roma as per usual. Amazed by how well she's rallying considering how awful her scrambling was in Miami/Charleston. First time in a long time that I've seen controlled aggression from her off the ground. Now that serve just needs to click.

Fantastic Venus.

Stosur was poor, but Vee was consistently on top of her for most of the match. Movement is coming on leaps and bounds, as is the backhand. Forehand is shaky still, but still a big weapon.

Starting to look like the Venus of old :worship:
So excited for RG-Wimby-OG if she can keep up this form and feel fit and healthy.

whats even more amazing during her last comeback (abdominal strain suffered WImbleodn 2003)
She returned Australian Open 2004, it took until ANtwerp 2005 to get a top 10 win, Miami to get a top 4 win, Wimbledon to get her first top 2 win.

So this comback seems to be preogressing a lot quicker

whats even more amazing during her last comeback (abdominal strain suffered WImbleodn 2003)
She returned Australian Open 2004, it took until ANtwerp 2005 to get a top 10 win, Miami to get a top 4 win, Wimbledon to get her first top 2 win.

So this comback seems to be preogressing a lot quicker

I see alternative explanations for that observation, but yes, I would rather believe your explanation

Big win for Venus...glad to see her getting to the quarters! She needs to get the confidence going!

What do you mean she needs to get the confidence going? The fact that she has chosen to keep playing despite having an autoimmune disease is confidence. Venus chose not to retire, but to keep on fighting and playing the game. That's CONFIDENCE.

This is the girls fourth tournament back despite having not played in a long time and she's doing pretty well. Maria has been back for 4 years and she just won her first title a few weeks ago.

Venus is learning how to deal with her illness and she's learning how to adjust on the courts, and she's learning how to hit the correct shots again, she's also learning how to cover the courts and build up her strength. All of her game has to be rebuilt and that takes time. She's beating players who has been playing consistently for years.

Apart from one game where venus hit 3DFs she played that second set really well. Avenged the charleston defeat.
Little by little, Venus is working her way back.
Here, she reminded us of the one-sided H2H 4-0 lead she had over Sam before Charleston.
What a difference between Charleston and now?

Fantastic Venus.

Stosur was poor, but Vee was consistently on top of her for most of the match. Movement is coming on leaps and bounds, as is the backhand. Forehand is shaky still, but still a big weapon.

Starting to look like the Venus of old :worship:
So excited for RG-Wimby-OG if she can keep up this form and feel fit and healthy.

Ivanovic would be like a bye to the semi's but we all know who Venus wants

Coming for your wig Maria :armed:

Venus and Maria have never played on clay

its 2-0 on Grass in Venus Favour

its 3-1 on Hard in Maria Favour

Venus has beaten Maria 3 of the last 4 times they have played.

They have not played since 2009 however.

This is the maturity of Venus. I think her all around life outside of tennis has given her life tools other tennis players do not have.
She has been around and interviewed succesfful people in business, politics and entertainment who have shared the stories of thei successes, setbacks/failure and overcoming those obstacles.

When a football player in Britain heard about Venus condition, he reached out to her, and Venus was so generous with her time sharing with him to cope with the disease and live a semblant of normal life, it gave the football player an optimistic outlook on his prospect to come back to football.

Btw, congrats Venus. A great victory for her. Venus is appeared so skinny with her vegan diet and despite her good movement (still not up to her standard at her prime), seemed to lose a great deal of power in all her shots and serves.

Great match from Venus:worship:, not so great from Sam.

Venus did everything better than Sam today: she served better, she moved better, she hit the ball much more cleanly and precisely. Sam really needs to pick up her game if she wants to have a chance at the French:(

I didn't get to see this match but it sounds like the conditions were bad and that Venus adjusted to them better than Sam did. I thought Sam would do well here, but if she was going to lose I'm glad it was to Venus. Venus deserves some success after everything she's been through, how hard she's worked to come back, and how she has handled everything with her usual class. Yeah, I'd certainly rather see Sam lose to someone like Venus than to a lot of others whose names I will not mention. Sam was well below her best, but that shouldn't detract from Venus' performance today. She fully deserved the win for sure.

That said, I have to raise my eyebrows a little at the people who (correctly) pointed out that some overenthusiastic posters expected Sam to win easily today, and then go on to confidently predict that Venus will easily beat Sam from now on. Some people are just not much good at learning I guess, even when the lessons are staring them right in the face.

How is it a bad loss when Stosur has only beaten Venus ONCE in her entire career. Venus now has a 5-1 head to head against Stosur.

The problem for Stosur is her strategy against Venus is all wrong. When Stosur hits the kick serve it doesn't bother Venus because she is six foot one! This is the same reason Stosur has poor records against Sharapova and Azarenka. The tall women aren't worried about Stosur's kick serve.

Sometimes the commentators are ludicrous I can see the point about Venus beating a top ten player BUT Stosur isn't Justine Henin she's inconsistent. Also, Venus has a 5-1 edge against Stosur the victory isn't really that much of a surprise.

As Much as I think Foxy is a MILITANT, She's been speaking the outright truth the last few days. People fail to realize, Venus is getting back into playing shape.

She stuck with her strategy today and it paid off - "Sam, if you're going to beat me, it's going to be w/your BH!" And dammit Venus Rode that monkey all the way to victory. She knows how to play this girl. Vee said it herself today, She wasn't ready to come back, it was going to be for Wimbledon. Well, her goal of playing in the olympics forced her back early and NOW, she's whipping her self into "playing" shape.

I'll say she's at 70/75%, which will get her to the qtrs of Most Tournaments, another 10%, she's looking at semi's and finals, we will see, how "MATCH STEADY" she will be tomorrow. I am still picking Venus over 'Pova in 2 tight sets.

I've been in the Caribbean for the last 10 days and had no clue what tournaments were on... Well done Miss Venus -- it's all about the Olympics---Veelympics

Hi Infinit! I'm jealous  I've been missing your post; welcome back. I totally agree with you about Venus, it's all about getting enough points to play the Olympics/Veelympics.

However, I do think she'll beat Maria on tomorrow. I'm laughing at some people who is stating that Venus is not the mover that she was when she was in her early 20's. Well, on her slowest day she's still faster than Maria and 99.9% of the women on the wta. Besides, Venus still has the best court coverage, why do they think she can serve at less than 50% and still win matches in straight sets. The idiots should realize is that despite her having not so great of a serving day, she's able to track her opponents balls down and send them back with interest to cause the errors.

I am always amazed as to how many pages a thread about a loss from Sam can actually fill. It is beyond belief how many people come crawling out from under their stones to gloat. Whatever Sam has done to deserve this...

Massively disappointed about this loss obviously. As it was against Venus I am kind of finding it easier to handle. Thank God it wasn't Pennetta or Kirilenko or someone like that. Good players obviously but they really shouldn't beat Sam.

It seems that Sam keeps getting stupid draws lately. Radwanska's withdrawel in Charleston meant Serena was moved into her half of the draw, otherwise it could have been the final, she had to play Sharapova at least one round too early in Stuttgart & now this early encounter with Venus.

Sam doesn't seem to be able to beat Venus (I know she did in Charleston) while she has beaten Serena several times. Reminds me of Jennifer & Lindsay, Jennifer could never beat Venus & often won against Serena while Lindsay often won against Venus & had much trouble with Serena.

I guess you could always say you need to be able to beat them all in order to win the title but there are definitely easier or tougher draws.

Happy Venus is finding her form. She needs to be at the Olympics.

Good luck in Paris, Sam, I shall be there. Let's hope the schedule will allow me to see you play & more importantly I hope you can win the title.

Hi GermanBoy, I enjoyed reading your post and I agree with your statement and your observation of the affects of Lindsey and Jennifer against both Venus and Serena.

However, I'm not surprised that Sam was slated to be in the third round with Venus. Remember I kept saying to observe the draws and you'll see how every player who has beaten Venus will be put in her draw in the first three rounds because they want to eliminate Venus early. Remember how they use to put Sprem, Vidasova, Pironkiva (sp), Jelena etc. in Venus' draw in the first week to knock her out of the tournament. It's only when she started beating them that they quit putting them in her draw.

Well Sam was to serve that purpose on today, but Venus said not today. The WTA still sets up these draws so that Maria can get to the semi's and possibly the finals. Look who Maria had today. It was purposely set up that Maria managed to be in the section of the draw that avoided Serena, Li, Petra, Victoria, Aggie, and every player who has beaten her this year.

The top section of the draw was set up for Serena, Victoria, Li, Aggie, and the others to eliminate each other. The WTA didn't have any idea that it would be the lower ranked players who eliminated most of the top 10 with the exception of Serena and Li.

Sam had just beaten Venus in their last match so she was slated to take her out today and that would pave the way for Maria to bash herself with a win over Sam, and they also figured that if she met Petra she could take her out in the semi's because she has already beaten her before. The problem is that this time it didn't work.

Venus has gone back and readjusted her game and like in the previous matches, she beat Sam. It's highly unlikely that Sam will be in Venus' section of the draw for Rome.

But this time Sam was the early sacrificial lamb. When Maria came back from her shoulder surgery, the WTA was giving her all of the low ranked players in the 80's and 100's and they were putting her on center court and the other lower ranked players like Aggie, Melanie Oudin, Maria Kirilenko and some others who started knocking her out of contention in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Then they stopped putting them in Maria's side of the draw.

The WTA was counting on a match up with Sam and Maria, NOT Venus and Maria.

That's why the men believe that the women should not get the same money as they do. It's because the WTA has been fixing these draws for Maria for the past 5 years. How is it that she is able to avoid all of the players who can take her out, or who has taken her out, but none of the other players can manage to avoid those who have beaten them.

How is it that she is able to get these easy draws that allows her to meet those opponents only in the semi's or the finals. How is she that lucky tournament-after-tournament, and year-after-year. I'll tell you how; the WTA is fixing these draws to favor Maria because she is who they have their money on.

Why do you think Serena beat her to a pulp last week. Serena reminds the WTA that Maria is nothing but a low tier II ball basher with no other game plan than to bash the ball.

The conditions were not ideal; wind, dust but it was for both.

Instead of Sam playing poorly, it is rather Venus who played well.
It was night and day between how Venus played today and how she performed in Charleston.

Had Venus played the way she did today, she would have beaten Sam in Charleston; after all she had 4-0 head-to-head over Sam going into that match.
With this win, it is now 5-1

Well yes Venus played well but let's not pretend Sam played well too. She was shanking shots everywhere especially from her BH side and Venus's serve can still be an issue sometimes. Good for Venus to pull out this win, must be a huge boost for her confidence to face Maria next round. One thing for sure is Venus cannot afford to start out poorly like she has been doing for the past two matches.

As for shanking shots, it must have been the wind, but as I said, the condition were not ideal, but equal for both players.

Sam was beaten the same way she is always beaten: weather the storm of her 1-2 punch service-and- DL foerhand, and you start planing doubt in her mind.

There shouldn't be any controversy, if Venus gets the points that are needed it's a done deal.

Doubles will be the controversy. So far, US has Huber, Raymond & King with the ranking that is needed for doubles play.

But the controversy will come when ppl start saying 'Serena/Vee should be playing doubles instead of a makeshift team like McHale/King'.

The IOC could give Ree/Vee a wildcard but again this could be controversial.

In the Olympics 'reigning champion' means nothing in terms of qualifying. And the controversy starts when people say 'why should the US get three doubles teams when all other countries only get two?' and perhaps again if people say 'how many Fed Cup teams has Venus actually played on in the last two years?'.

The IOC/ITF wildcard criteria is based on rankings (ie close to the cut-off for the event) and/or geographical spread. Right now, Venus doesn't meet either.

Tennisbum you're right. One commentary said that the wind was so bad that stuff was flying on the court (I believe he stated that a copper something had flown onto the court) and other items were flying on the court. It was stated that one woman had put a scarf over her eyes and mouth like a doctors mask, but the wind was blowing dirt and all kinds of objects onto the court.

The wind was so bad that it caused both Venus and Sam to have two breaks of serves in a row. It was stated that the wind blew like during the entire match but Venus adjusted her game and she was working Sam's weakness/backhand to the point that she shut Sam's game down. It was also stated that the wind was so bad that Venus had three double faults in a row, then she kicked up a tempest of her own and threw down 3 aces in a row, then Venus ran with the second set and it was all over.

He stated that Venus was eating up Samantha's kick serve because it was coming right into her strike zone just where she likes it. It was also reported that Sam picked up her game too, but Venus' court coverage was phenomenal.

Think about what you just posted. I mean really think about it. What you're basically saying is that a match involving Venus gets a lot of attention not based on it's merits, but because it involved a big celebrity named Venus. The sad thing about this is that it's true: Venus played a good match, but nothing exceptional, and Sam played poorly, but the thread just goes on and on and on. Compare that to a very high-quality clay court match like Stosur-Goerges in Stuttgart. The thread for that match petered out after barely 50 posts. I can't think of a better illustration of how much of TF is hot air than this.

No, Venus is a big name tennis player. Big name tennis players draw a bigger audience than those that aren't big name players. You're trying to make a profound statement out of a bunch of bullshit. o.O

A Sharapova/Ivanovic thread is gonna get more play than a Kerber/Goerges thread because they have a bigger fanbase and/or are bigger name players. That's common sense.

You have to be interested in the player or players to even WATCH the match to see if it's high quality or not. Your post really makes very little sense and lacks logical thinking.

If this had been pre-immune disease, then this thread probably wouldn't be going as long as it is either. A lot of people (myself included) expected Venus to lose this match. I don't see how it's a problem. It doesn't display anything, other than that Venus is a popular player, who got a win that a lot of people didn't expect she would, playing against someone who is a good claycourt player (despite how well she did or didn't play).

*Serena lost to Bartoli at Wimbledon....despite how well Serena did or didn't play she is STILL a great grasscourt player and it was still a good win for Bartoli, who played a good match.

Also, this thread is going on so long because many Stosur fans trashed Venus, and now, people STILL fail to give Venus credit for the win. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter who played well or who didn't play well, all that matters is who got the W. And Venus got it, so give her her props.

I fully understand that people are following her closely, and that she gets attention based on respect for her fighting spirit in the face of her illness, but based on yesterday's match there's probably not much more to be said than "Well done, you beat a good claycourter in difficult conditions, good luck in the next round".

It's a bit rich that you're using negative comments by Stosur fans as an excuse for the thread going on so long, when you have gone out of your way to express a degree of contempt for Sam that, with all due respect, she doesn't deserve. Sure, there are a couple of idiots masquerading as Stosur fans who have showed similar disrespect for Venus, but most Stosur fans like me have nothing but respect for Venus. In fact, Venus is probably the most universally respected currently active player, but inevitably some people are stupid enough to post negative shit about her when she beats their fave. Posters like that don't really deserve a response at all, but if you do feel the need to defend Venus' honor, you don't make matters better by responding with similarly idiotic crap about Sam.

Well Huber/Raymond are guaranteed a spot no matter what happens in Roland Garros. Losing R1 and Vania winning would still leave them both ahead of her. Vania's spot is the only one in question and one that is not automatically in. Vania having a top ten spot after Roland Garros is a bit questionable. Varvara and Venus getting the 2 singles spots means no Olympcis for Vania. Just Venus getting the spot leaves the door open for Vania to sneak into the team for doubles, which she admitted during AO. Venus and Serena are however the wiser team to play than a raw team of Venus or Serena with Vania. Venus/Serena are 10-0 in Olympics, Venus and Serena with other partners are 0-1 at Olympics.

She's hopeless. It's embarrassing for the sport that this woman has a Grand Slam.

Venus, congrats! :D

Another Stosur's hater!!!!:help::facepalm:

But yeah - it doesn't matter. Usain Bolt can be world record holder and defending champ but if he doesn't qualify....

This is foolish. If it's embarrassing that Stosur has a major then all players with one major are embarrassing.

Sam won her major the same way everybody else did, by beating every opponent she faced in the tournament.

if sam is a embarrassment since she has 1 slam what does that make players such as Ivanovic, Myskina, Sabatini, Majoli, Martinez, Schiavone and Novotna
