View Full Version : Is Pietrangeli the best outside court of a tennis tournament?

Outside court definition here = you don't have to pay extra to get into, just a ground pass can do.

Beautiful court design, which the court is surrounded by lots of statues. Nice atmosphere since the scheduled players are Italians

any other good example of best outside courts in other tournaments?

I like all the courts and the whole atmosphere. It has a Mediterranean Wimbledon atmosphere. A week ago it was warehouses in Madrid.

I also suspect Pietrangeli wouldn't be as attractive in person, when you're sitting there with 1/2 a beach in your eyes!

It does, but the structure itself doesn't have the character of the aforementioned.

I love the Pietrangeli court at Foro Italico. It is an absolutely beautiful mini-stadium! Serena Williams will be playing Ana Medina Garrigues on Pietrangeli tomorrow, which I think is fantastic. I love when top players get outside of the absolute biggest courts at the big tournaments. Some people complain when top names play on outside courts, but I don't get it. It's not like this is a small court by any means. It could be the main court at many smaller tournaments. One of the best parts of Wimbledon, for me, is that you see tons of the top women on Courts 2, 3, 12, and 18. (They don't get billing equal to men on the top stadiums, which isn't really right, but that's another story.) Here are two more pictures of my two favorite smaller courts (also Pietrangeli and Court 18):

I also really like Montreal's court 1, experienced some awesome atmosphere when I went there in 2004.

It's very nice, I love the courts in Rome :hearts:

If it's the best outside court, I don't know. Wimbledon has some nice outside courts too, I like Court no.2 a lot :cheer:

Brisbane second court has a canopy over it. Looks really cool and gives good shade.
The following its the send two in the second picture. With stands and cheering fans its really nice, even though it doesn't look great:

Margeret Court is about to become this. Construction is well under way :) Whether it remains an outside court/part of the ground pass will be interesting. There will be a bunch of new outside courts on the left hand side as well.

Is that Court 1 or Court 2 on the left of RLA?

Margeret Court (Show court 1) is the stadium with the new roof, Show Court 2 to the bottom of the screen and Show court 3 to the left.

Whether it remains an outside court/part of the ground pass will be interesting.Well if that illustration is any indication, the Margaret Court arena will most likely upgrade to an entry status similar to Rod Laver and Hisence arenas (so I think you can forget hoping that you'll be allowed in just with your ground pass).

It's great.

Court 2 at Wimbledon is great, too. Court 17 at the US Open is pretty fun, too. I love how it is built into the ground. The atmosphere is nice, too, given the right matches.

Gorgeous. And the camera angle is beautiful.

Can it be more obvious that Rome should be the mandatory and Madrid the P5?

oops my bad, I thought the grey-roofed one were the RLA.
Then where is Hisense?

I love that Pietrangeli doesn't have proper seats, it's so old school. I also love the gorgeous marble embellishments.

Here is a different perspective of Melbourne Park. Hisense Arena is hard to see in the pervious photo because there is a canopy shown that will eventually cover the space between Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena.

what i like most about the Foro Italico is that all the courts are surrounded by the pines...

Personally, maybe because of personal involvement, but Grandstand and Louis Armstrong at the US Open

The amount of history at Louis Armstrong as the former Center Court, and Grandstand being extremely intimate, which great shaded seating on one side. Plus they both have a history of epics, far more than AA.

Quite simply, Yes. I don't think I've seen such a roaring atmosphere from a crowd for their home player outside of a Slam or CC.

I think the Margaret Court Arena is the best but I don't remember if you need to pay extra to get in
