Makarova CHOKED the first set

lol no. Venus almost choked the first set. Makarova was toast as soon as Venus stopped making ridiculous errors on every ball she hit. Makarova is a good matchup for Venus.

Brilliant from Venus in the last half of the match. Please bring that level tomorrow.

Also the best her defense has looked BY FAR in this comeback. Still not close to 2010 levels even, but she seems at least half a step quicker than she was a month ago. And she looks much less labored when yanked out wide.

As the match went on, she finally started clicking. Venus was composed and intense at the same time.

Until 3-1 in the second set: "Let's stop hitting errors"

Some woeful tennis in the beginning from venus, but what a difference it makes when she loosens up! When there was much less pressure on her, her level of tennis was great, goodluck against sam, she needs the win more than stosur :)

Revenge for AO, thanks Big Sis!

Routine in the end, Vee played OK after the first 8 games. Nothing is GREAT at the moment, movement probably her most impressive asset at the moment. I can't see what she could do to beat Stosur, I just can't. Then again, I didn't see her winning a set today, so prove me wrong Venus!

Good stuff from the middle of the 1st set (although Vee never should have let it get to a tie break). Vee was steady from the baseline. Imagine that. :-) She even threw in a couple of good defensive lobs. That's pretty new to her game. Venus doesn't usually do lobs (well).

Great second set by Venus, that kind of tennis would probably get the win against Sam tommorow but nothing under, and if she plays like she did in the first set then she's toast.

A mixture of pushing and puffball hitting by Vee, and then some ferocious attacking tennis, really don't know what to expect with her anymore.

Makarova did not choke in the first set. Venus quite noticeably upped her level/stopped making so many errors!

I saw some really good stuff from her in the last few games of the first set. Glad that she didn't let Makarova back into it.

She'll still need some luck against Stosur though!

This.

Completely agree. Not moving anywhere near 2010 nevermind 2008 and before but she's improving and i think she can still get a bit better. She'll never move the way she did 5 years ago, but something close to that would be nice.

Really impressed by her defense out of her backhand corner, really turned some defensive positions around with that shot.

Venus gifted those opening games of the match and barely scraped through a hold when she was down 1-4  Then she almost let Makarova off the hook by blowing all those set points and getting herself into a tricky tiebreaker. After Venus cleaned up her act, Makarova was toast. While this is a decent win, it doesn't say anything about how Venus will fare against Stosur. Makarova isn't a great player on clay, and of course her game is different from Stosur's.

One thing you can always count on from Venus is her determination, win or lose. She will need it when she meets Stosur. Stosur has much more power than Makarova, and when she's on, she's on !

Makarova is like so many of the other players. She lacks real power, her serve is so so, and her mental toughness is weak.

Makarova folded like a cheap tent once she blew that set.
Should have won that set long before she served for it at 5-4.

Venus played an excellent game today. It's a proven fact that some of you guys don't know how to analyze a tennis match. Makarova got off to a good start. She was hitting a lot of spins and the ball was going low and Venus couldn't generate the pace to get it over the net. Makarova is a lefty and they balls bounce differently on the clay surface.

However, after Venus adjusted her game and her court coverage in the first set, the last set was an easy win.

These girls are suppose to make Venus or Serena work for their win. Damn, after years of being professional tennis players and playing all year long; Makarova and the other girls should have some wins against the sisters by now. This is Venus' fourth tournament back from an illness and she's been doing excellent.

She won in two sets, whereas it took Serena a LONG three sets to win because Nadia was playing very well. And look at how the other top seed were dropping like FLIES TODAY, and they were dropping to lower ranked players. So kudos to Venus and I think she'll be ready for Sam Stosur when they meet. Like Venus stated it had been a couple of years since she had played Sam and she had to get use to her type of ball again.

I think Venus is going to beat Sam, and we know she can beat Maria with ease. Look how Venus was eating her up at Wimbledon and in their other matches. Why do you think the WTA was purposely keeping Maria out of Venus and Serena's draws these past couple of years. That was "RIGGED" because the sisters were beating her like she stole their money.

First congratulations.

I did not see the match, but from what I am ready, it appears she is gradually improving on the physical sides.
No body mentioned how missearble she looked(and sounded) the fist time she came back; it was painful to watch her then.
I am glad she is coming along nicely.

Have you been watching WTA or ATP matches? Players came back from 0-40 on serves have happened very often, you fool. Up a break is not clearly an advantage on the women tour as opposed to the men tour, especially when Venus' errors at the beginning were what got Makarova the early lead. Venus had 3 set points, comparing to none of Makarova, and wasted it before seal it up. Learn the English meaning of " choked" first before stunk up all the places here, Thanks

scary bad early in the first, started looking comfortable in the second set, there was less of that uneasy feeling in watching her take on a shot where you really didnt know what was going to happen. Much less erratic. I hope she can bring it against sam. Just an even w-ue will make me happy

1st set was key and by the end of that set, I felt Makarova really invested everything she could and if she didn't win that set, she'd be toast :awww: Venus broke her down mentally and was physically superior - Makarova was SO far gone in that second set. It was nice to see Venus willing to extend herself physically and clearly thinking out there, willing primarily to get into 5+ ball rallies with Ekat (and winning majority of them :bounce:), using the whole court, and being more selective when to be aggressive. Some of those short angle BHs Venus hit were just

If she's going to try to be patient against Sam like when she was successful today, she's going to have to be more precise in getting the ball deeper into the court. No way Sam is gonna let her get away with some of the mid-court fluff she did against Ekat today. She also needs to hold on to her serve and be aggressive in Sam's service games when she can. Honestly don't think she'll beat Sam, but definitely hopeful. Come on Vee :bounce:

Nice to hear that she is making steady progress.
I did not see any her 2 matches, but from I read, there is reason for optimism about her health and match readiness.

The smart girl she is, she obvioulsy has made some adjustment after Charleston.
Charleston was painful to watch, she was laboring on every shot; it got to apoint where I just wshed she loses to save her the agony.
A couple of weeks later, it looks like she can hang in there much better now.

Awful start but once she got going, it was hard to stop her.

I like the "new Vee's" approach to the game; it isnt simply about hitting the hardest shot anymore or getting the big first strike, I actually see her constructing points a lot better - using lobs, slices, coming into the net, angles, top spin balls, especially that forehand loop down the line was really effective in drawing a short ball from Katya. Also, she moved very well.

Well done Vee :)
