I would give the edge to Ana if it weren't for that wacky ball toss she's been developing for the past 3 years. Ana is even more shaky on her serve than Maria nowadays.

A couple years ago I would have given Ivanovic the clear edge on this surface. Now it's pretty even.

This is the type of match that Ana needs to step up and win if she wants to get back into the top 10. I think she'll bring it, and she's definitely looked the more impressive of the two so far this week, but I still see Sharapova taking this in three. I'll be happy with whatever result as long as it's a good match.

The most beautiful player of the 2, Ivanovic, will win this.

If only she had a brain it would be easier though, gamewise her opponent can hurt her on this surface, with the trashing in that Roland Garros semis being proof of it.

Yeah it's very much the same game plan against Stosur, only Maria doesn't really need her ROS in this match-up like she does against Sam. Ana's serve isn't very good.

I think so too.

Haven't people been saying this about Ivanovic for years?
And then, even when she gets a confidence-boosting win, she crumbles in the next round and doesnt take her opportunities.

It really does just go to show that on her average day that she's a top 20 player, no more, no less. She's capable of a big upset though.

Out of the top 5 players (ie: Azarenka, Sharapova, Radwanska, Kvitova, Stosur), Ana's best chance for a win is Sharapova. Reading comprehension. You should try it.

Should've said 'Ana has more of a chance to win against Sharapova than the current top 5'

Because she struggles against big servers like Stosur and Kvitova, and both Azarenka and Radwanska are way too consistent for Ivanovic. I think if she has a good backhand day she has a real shot.

She was moving well on clay against Sveta, I was surprised. During the last few years her movement on clay was worse than it was while she was chubby. She can still hit the forehand hard, but it's too flatter than it was and therefore not so effective on clay. She used to put more weight on it.

Anyway, their last match on clay was lifetime ago and Ana was a completely different player.

Maria is ahead of Kvitova and Stosur in service game won percentage in 2012 and as you know, her serves got even better at Stuttgart. Please see the attachment, http://www.wtatennis.com/SEWTATour-Archive/Rankings_Stats/match_stats.pdf.

Stuttgart is also indoors. Ivanovic's toss is a disaster regardless of conditions and she's learning to deal with it, but Sharapova's serve can disintegrate on a windy day. I'm not saying Ivanovic is the favorite to beat Maria (she's not), but I think Ana has a better chance of beating Maria than she does Aza, Aga, Kvitova, or Stosur. It's about matchups, not statistics. That's all I'm saying.

I agree. What I don't understand is why some people seem SO certain that Ana's going to beat Maria since apparently she's the MUCH better player. I've even read that had Ana not gotten injured in IW she would've for sure won their SF encounter. Like what?

I never thought Ivanovic would win that match, but I do think Ana's one of the few who can take a match out of Maria's hands. When Ivanovic is serving well and controlling the court with her forehand you have to be able to play some pretty good defense to stay with her, which we all know is not Maria's bag. Ivanovic has never beaten Maria when Maria is playing well, but if Maria's not serving well (i.e., French Open 07) Ana has the game to take advantage of that.

I still feel Maria in two.
This is the very first time since 2008 that Ana coming to clay season with TOP10 level (in hers case TOP10 on HC means TOP5 on clay), plus she is injury free. BTW Ana during whole career never played seriously last tournament before Slam (which is always week or two before GS and she uses that just like warm-up), but when opponent is someone like Maria Sharapova, and Ana also have some chances to reach TOP10 - this Rome should be exception of this rule - or at least this 3rd round only.

On other hand Sharapova not so much improved on clay this season like people here thinks. Don't forget that she lose QF against eventual RG champion in 2005, reach RG SF already in 2007, in 2008 have MP against eventual finalist, last season lose SF against eventual champion. This season her chances is bigger than ever, but mostly because Henin retire and some clay specialists like Kuznetsova, Ivanovic (no - she is back), Safina, Jankovic... is out of nowhere. That helped Schiavone and Li Na so much for recent RG titles, but this season it seems that two former RG champions Serena (for sure) and Ana (IMHO) is back like contenders again on this surface.

Talking about todays match I guess first set will be once again crucial (all 6 h2h Maria-Ana matches so far finished in two!).

Ivanovic has never beaten Maria when Maria is playing wellAna beat Maria in semifinal of Grand Slam when Maria is #2 ranked in the world, and in semifinal of tier-I event when Maria is WTA#1, so Maria's current well deserved #2 ranking and arguable good shape still not means sure win against very motivated Ivanovic if Ana will find hers "best" claycourt game. Last week in Madrid according to reports Ana played amazing level of tennis against Azarenka in first and last part of that match, but not survive mental collapse in the middle where between 4-1 and 4-6 1-4 lose 9 out of 10 games. On real clay In Rome, and especially in Paris - Ana don't have any reason to panic or to be afraid against anybody, so today I expect real WTA showdown.

1. Maria was dogshit in the French Open semi. Ivanovic played great, but Maria was awful.
2. Maria retired with a hamstring injury in the second set of the Tokyo 07 match.
3. Ana, sadly, hasn't played well on clay in four years. She should be playing well, but she hasn't.

The poll is very close: 53-47 for Pova. I guess they will have to play the match afterall.

Aboout 13 hours from now it will all unfold.
No match is ever won in the poll.
The players have to do on the court. We know what happen in Serena vs. Caro

I wonder just how well Ana is moving on the clay this week, she hasn't had a really good clay season since 2008 (and even then it was inconsistent) so I'm hesitant to give her the surface advantage. Again, I'm expecting her mental strength to let her down in this match. I suspect that she'll be playing well enough to be in it, but this isn't a final vs. Vika and Ana is not Serena so Maria is going to fight to the death

Ana really does need this more - Maria can bounce back from anything, be it a beatdown or a tight loss, she'll be fine if she loses this one.

I voted for Maria, but really this could go either way. With the other half of the draw falling apart it sucks that we have great match-ups like this (and Sam-Venus, and Angie-Julia) in R3 in this half. I really hope we get something like a balanced draw at RG.

Ana is one of those players Maria doesn't like losing against. She never really loses focus against her. Indian Wells was a good example. Ana came out guns blazing and Maria really didn't care. She just waited for her chances and took care of her serve. She didn't get that look of helpless little puppy on the street like she does against Serena and Victoria.

Her only true defeat was at the French Open and Maria hated that loss. It was very clear in the YEC and AO final matches that ensued.

For the collective tour, we need Martha now more than ever since Petra is still figuring things out. The alternative is Azarenka, Radwanska, or Borz winning things.

Ana beat Maria in semifinal of Grand Slam when Maria is #2 ranked in the world, and in semifinal of tier-I event when Maria is WTA#1, so Maria's current well deserved #2 ranking and arguable good shape still not means sure win against very motivated Ivanovic if Ana will find hers "best" claycourt game.

Yeah, because the real reason for Ana's panic in Madrid is the blue clay. :weirdo:

Seriously, Cp6uja... please :sobbing:

The poll result is way to close considering how much of a favourite Maria is. Yes, Ana could win. i hope she gives it everything. But she hasn't done much of anything on clay in a long time. Maria has.

Heck, if Ana was able to bring her A game on clay, she would beat Sharapova, no matter how good Maria played. But there's not much to indicate that this is going to happen.

This is the reason why I like Maria so much. People can consider her an arrogant bitch as much as they want, but this "arrogant bitch" knows how to deal with the most terrible losses and still bounce back. Regardless of her attitude, her self-awareness is unquestionable.
