Serena's draw has collapsed. No Wozniacki, no Radwanska. Next up - AMG.

Serena can half ass it to the semifinals and then turn it up against Vika and Maria.

This was an excellent test for Serena as Petrova hits with the type of spin Serena hates. Serena fought well and fought through all the bad mistakes. Excellent match.

Almost gave me a heart attack when she lost the first set. Nadia is always a tough opponent for Serena despite sucking for rest of the year :sobbing: No matter what, she toughed out the win and its all that matters.

There seemed to be something wrong/weird with Serena today. But honestly, I can't see her going far in Rome with her current play. GL against AMG anyway :yeah:

Frankly I am shocked. I picked Nadia in 3. I thought Serena would fold after the first set. Plus she was giving us her "I'm tired" persona. Did not expect her to fight through 3 sets. Still this is the type of match she needs. Often I think she helps opponents who think if they stay in a match, especially on clay, she might not want to go the distance.

Serena will be fine for the FO. She like everyone has next week off. She can rest then.

Good match! The game was for the one who decided to take it, and that was Serena today. The stats were basically the same, with the exception of UFE's.

Nadia really needs to work on her mental toughness. At times she was flaking out too much for no reason. But today Serena stayed calm on the important points and she won the match.

On to the next round.

Well at least she made it to the final on her first slam back after injury, Samantha was simply the better player on that day

She has already played the same number of tournaments so far in 2012 as in 2010 and 2011...seems like Serena is very determined to get enough matchplay under her belt this year for the Olympics, if only she can keep her focus up constantly

On an unrelated note, thoughts on the match:
1) Naughtya better praise LordRena that this wasn't in front of the French crowd, or they would have ripped her a new one after throwing her towel on the floor like that.
2) I think Lordrena has seemed so lackluster recently because her timing is thrown off by the change of surface. Lord hasn't been adjusting well, she actually looks more thrown from Green/Blue Clay -> Red Clay than she has from Miami's slow hard > Green/Blue(aka slippery hard.)
3) You got your tough red clay match in, tank now please. If Woz was still in the draw I'd say play her to get another tough match against a totally different playstyle, but it's just AMG who will be a waste of time and energy.

Nadia said, before her match against Serena in the 3R, that Serena was over, and wouldn't win another slam.

No, this is the actual quote and it's not as bad as people made it out to be.

"They haven't been doing so great," said Petrova, adding older sister Venus to the mix. "They've had lots of injuries and they are not in the best shape of their life. It looks like everything is leading to the end of their career because they are quite busy; they have talks shows, books, and clothing lines. It looks like they are focused on other things and they have already done their job on court. It looks like they are finishing playing tennis. The motivation probably isn't there."

Wow, I've never seen Serena so not in control of the points. Certainly not in a while.

I'm obviously not saying that she was pushing before you all jump down my throat, but she was certainly 'reacting' rather than creating, there was little impetus from her in the majority of the rallies. A lot of her winners came from defensive positions.

Just odd to see her play like that is all. Good fight as ever.

Regina Serena did not show up today, she'll be back in the next match.

Yeah, yesterday she looked like NOT the same Serena to me but today something clearly was bothering her, must have been some pain as she took some pills in the second set and you could see the expression on her face at times she was in some kind of pain.
I would rather she withdrew than continue and jeopardize her health for RG.

Azarenka withdrew. Even easier road for Serena if she can stay healthy and fight. Of course, don't put RG in jeopardy but play smart tennis to prepare for RG.
