Last year you had the number one, Caroline Wozniacki, at your tournament. This year it's only number three, Agnieszka Radwanska. A little dissapointed?

No, not at all. Last year we really wanted to make a statement for our first edition and that's why we had the number one at that moment. This year we talked with Victoria Azarenka but we didn't want to spend that much money on her presence. All in all I think the field is stronger then last year and it can only get better because we still have to wildcards for players in the top 20 of the world.

Who are the players to watch at this years Brussels Open?

I will particularly follow Agnieszka Radwanska, who is improving almost every month. I have high hopes as well for the two Germans, Kerber and Goerges. Especially Kerber is an interesting player. She was the first German girl since Steffi Graf to reach a semi final of a Grand Slam (U.S.Open 2011). She may not have the looks of a Kournikova or Ivanovic but she sure can play some nice tennis

:hysteric:

PS - stop twisting Monami's words! She simply states that the tournament this year didn't want to spend the kind of sum a number 1 player costs, unlike last year when they did in order to attract attention for the first tournament. It's not like Vika turned down an appearance fee because it was too small. She wouldn't play there anyway and burn herself out before Roland Garros, her name isn't Radwanska...

:help: Shut up.

The article doesn't even say Vika was interested or that her fee was discussed, just that they wanted to spend their money elsewhere. I don't see the problem. Vika should ask for quite a fee to play the week before a major if they really wanted her.

Why would any real RG contender take part in this vulture fest when they could go much deeper at the French by resting properly? Extremely Injured would never do that.

The polish vulture will obviously whore it. It's nice to see she herself knows she'll be as irrelevant at RG as her sponsor, so might as well scavenge on some extra points on her road to becoming Wozniacki 2.0

I heard that Federer/Nadal ask for appearance fees much higher than total prize money at ATP 250 events (I don't know if it's true though). Vika's brand name is nowhere near as close to theirs, but it wouldn't surprise me if she asked ridiculous amounts of money for appearing at small events she has no intention of playing anyway just to see if anyone agrees.

May 16th, 2012, 08:35 AM
This woman really needs media training. It's probably not a great idea to publicly imply that:

1. the only reason top players would come to your tournament is if you can afford their appearance fee, and

2. that one of the better players at your tournament is ugly.

I suppose she thinks that there is No Such Thing As Bad Publicity.

Which may be true. Would we even bother discussing the tournament without this? Maybe only to pooh-pooh Radwanska's scheduling choices.

Otherwise, the public admission that top players will only play here if bribed, and that the tournament can't afford the bribe, seems a bit naive.

And why even mention Angie's looks? They aren't relevant to her play, and aren't so notably good or bad that you can't help but have them on your mind.

This year they werent paying for Vika. She doesnt say Vika is asking for a lot. They just werent paying her.

Kerber looks fine and is an excellent young player. Just not a name player, yet.

I'm a clinically diagnosed Psychopath, therefore I have the right to rape countless woman and throw their violated bodies into the Mississippi delta with a brick I pilfered from a Building site.

Most casual tennis fans DO NOT KNOW who Azarenka is. Azarenka is basically a Sharapova clone expect she's uglier and grunts louder than Maria. The WTA only has THREE superstars the Williams Sisters and Sharapova that's it! I remember reading an article by Tom Tebutt a well known tennis writer and he said this. The Williams Sisters and Sharapova bring in the big bucks and fans to tennis events around the world.

Azarenka has ONE slam why do some people act like she's all that? Give me a break! Azarenka has to Do MORE than just win one slam. I think this French Open/Wimbledon season is very important to Azarenka if she wants to become a GLOBAL star she's got to win one of the three other slams.

No offense to Australian Open tennis fans but the Australian Open is the LEAST IMPORTANT of the four grand slams. Everyone knows this. The French Open, Wimbledon, and US OPEN have a higher status than the Australian Open.

Rest Maria!

Li Na and VIP are such wasted opportunities for WTA in terms generating money. Shame they didn't do anything notable after winning their maiden slams.:o

What does that have to do with anything. Who cares what status it is, they all want to win it and it carries the same points.

It's not some sort of gallery that's been run here or i would have been out of it long ago.Tom Tebutt is obviously an idiot who thinks in status more than sheer achievement. Just as you seem to do. Vika has been very successful, who are you or loser Tebutt to argue against this? Real tennis fans will value Vika's contribution to the game even if they don't like her.

I always thought he was one of the countless Williams-clowns in GM but I could be wrong. :p

So many threads about Azarenka ... by far the most popular girl on Tour definitely)

Good reaction from Kerber (and Goerges).

Cancelled a tournament where they have nothing
to expect because director and organisation are
proofing ridiculous incompetentcy.

(Not that incompetency is a rare thing within
WTA tournaments but this here is a new low)

Van Roost' comment was just as pathetic as her game was. She should not be director next year.

Since Angie is a top player now she just doesn`t want to play in the week before a slam.

Yeah, amusing as it is to assume she took offence at Domi's clumsy remark, I think she just looked physically and mentally tired in her Rome semi.

She has a decent shot at making week 2 in Garros, and playing this week would be a bad choice. Especially since she could go far in this field.

^^Agree, Angie's right to withdraw. And if it is for the stupid remark (don't think so actually) even better.

You are so obsessed with Azarenka it's comical. :rolls: Maybe you should focus on your fave's inability to make a Grand Slam semifinal and yet you have the nerve to rank the Grand Slams in order of importance. There are hundreds of girls on the Tour who would kill to taste Grand Slam glory - how dare you diminish that dream, to talk down one of the biggest events in this sport.

I'm sure if Radwanska won the AO you'd be singing a different tune. Serena has 5 AOs, you're going to diminish hers too? Roger Federer loves the AO - does that make him irrelevant?

Crawl back into your hole.

*bump*

Was away for a while and I'm searching for some of the stuff that meanwhile went on. So far Monami's comments are the cream of the crop. :hysteric:

That comment about Kerber's looks is really bizarre, especially coming from a former player.

Even if she really thought that Kerber is ugly, there was absolutely no need to bring it up. She must have poor social skills.

Regardless of how candid Monami was trying to be there, I doubt she'd mention it if she didn't think that

I) Kerber's defining trait is being very ugly;
II) everybody else shares that view, to the extent that it would be weird if she didn't mention it somehow while talking about Kerber.

Only like I've said before, that's open to discussion to say the least. I find Kerber so funny looking - like a cartoon doll, with her tubby figure, oversized braid and big drowsy eyes. Just adorable.
