Conventional wisdom would point to a Serena tank against Petrova. However, given Petrova's coach statements, if Serena would have gotten wind of his comments, I highly doubt a tank. She will have to serve a little better though as Petrova has beaten her on clay before so she obviously knows what she's doing. I'm also surprised that they don't have her match a little later in the day considering she was scheduled last today...very interesting..and could be something to watch..

When was the last time she played a match with no aces? That's weird

That just goes to show how overrated aces and double faults are (although, admittedly, I've always loved big servers). You don't win extra points for the former, and you don't lose extra points for the latter. Also, we all know that a double at 0-40 is infinitely worse than a double at 40-0, but they both show up the same on a stat sheet.

That's just the red clay. I feel like she has to work twice as much on red clay. Definitely her worst surface. The zero ace stat is no coincidence.

her 1st serve percentage had more to do with that than the speed of a court....otherwise nadia and others wouldn't have had aces today, people wouldn't ace at RG either...i wish people would get off that train

and serena has looked slow and lethargic on other courts, and has looked "peek" on red clay...again, it doesn't have anything to do with clay "making" her look lethargic...she played last match in cold conditions after a final two days prior in another country...she's not coming out like a spring chicken

Blame the Canadian, not American press for this headline

As for me, I just love it

Injury only thing that can stop Serena Williams

As the big Madrid tournament got under way last week, and the litany of complaints about the slippery courts led by the top two male players began, Serena Williams said she loved the colour.
She said she could play on ice, if she had to.

The biggest complaint she had was about the faulty air conditioning in her Madrid hotel room. By the end of the week, Williams had obliterated the world’s top two female players, No. 1 Victoria Azarenka and No. 2 Maria Sharapova, on her way to her second consecutive clay-court tournament win.

You know when people say that regardless of ranking, Williams is far and away the best female tennis player on the planet when she’s healthy? Weeks like this are why.
Right now, the 30-year-old looks to be the fittest she’s ever been. She looks as relaxed and eager as she ever has. She was singing, and dancing, on Madrid’s stadium court. It was downright scary.
But before we anoint Williams the favourite at the French Open, which begins in two weeks, let’s take a deep breath and wait to see what happens in Rome this week as both the women and the men are back on regulation red clay.

Williams’ two tournament wins came on surfaces that are nominally considered clay, but in fact are quite different. The win in Charleston, S.C., last month was on the artificial Har-Tru, the greenish-grey surface we call “clay” in North America. The Madrid win was on a surface, or “Smurface,” that provided serving statistics similar to the ones put up on lightning-quick indoor surfaces that favour the big servers.

Williams posted two match wins on the “real” clay in Fed Cup against Ukraine last month, but they came against two obscure players she would likely take care of routinely under any circumstances — probably even on ice.

Williams hasn’t won the French Open since 2002. Only twice in 10 attempts has she even made it past the quarter-finals. That’s an astonishing statistic, even if there certainly was a little bad luck involved.
Superior early clay rivals Jennifer Capriati and Justine Henin are now retired. The last two Williams losses in Paris were three-set barnburners in the quarter-finals to Svetlana Kuznetsova (the 2009 champion who hasn’t come close to that since) and Samantha Stosur, who reached the final in 2010 and was in supreme form.

Another factor to consider is that Williams has played so little back-to-back tennis in recent years. It seems that just when she gets back and starts playing a somewhat regular schedule, she gets hurt again.
The last time Williams went back-to-back in big tournaments was last summer. She won the Rogers Cup in Toronto; the following week in Cincinnati, she handed Stosur an injury walkover after playing only one match.

After Rome, Williams will have a week’s break before Roland Garros. But the way she’s playing, it seems as though only some bad health can stop her right now.

RAONIC A WORK IN PROGRESS: After his semifinal effort in Barcelona and his hard-luck loss to eventual champion Roger Federer in Madrid, Milos Raonic’s name started popping up as an all-court threat to the top names in the game.

Sunday in Rome, in the first round, the 21-year-old Canadian went down to an unseeded German named Florian Mayer in straight sets.

Raonic fell to a crafty, unorthodox player who slices and dices, loves the drop shot, and generally gives opponents fits when he’s playing well, but Mayer had been struggling this spring. It was a reminder that the path to the top 10 is littered with potential potholes, and that Raonic’s learning curve continues.
Still, his new ATP ranking of No. 21 is another career high.

Rome proved rather unlucky for the Canadians overall. Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., after winning two matches in qualifying, fell 6-1, 6-7 (1), 6-3 to Julia Goerges of Germany on Monday in match conditions worthy of the Sahara desert. Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil fell to lefty Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 6-1, 7-5 in the first round of qualifying.

No, there weren't. Serena just had a bad serving day, which happens to every player at every level.

On the subject of tanking, I seriously doubt that most people posting on this board even know what that word means. When a player tanks a match, that means they are deliberately trying to lose, and as far as I'm concerned, accusing a player of tanking is worse than accusing them of taking steroids, because at least with the steroids, they're trying to make themselves better so they can win.
