 Mess Maria. Got through though.
Some impressive play from Mchale but Maria kept hitting down the middle and allowing her to dictate play :o

Tough match, but she got through it. This is clay so I expect more matches like this to come.

Not impressed at all. Ivanovic has a real good chance to take her down in the next round. But of course Maria will up her play there...

Anyway, NID.

I thought it was a really good match. Maria wasn't playing badly but Christina just played well. She'll get another win over a top player soon.

Maria, what the fck happened to your groundstrokes :hysteric: Such epic deceleration, even on the backhand. I was sinking into my seat :spit: Picked it up at the ends of each set and played with more conviction. Please up the intensity and hit the practice court ASAP.

Tough tough match. No where near Maria's best but as she has done many times before she fights thru the ugly play for the win. She will no doubt up her level for her next match...she will have to.

Very impressed with Christina.
Maria wasn't good obviously but not terrible either, McHale is a tricky opponent, with someone else it could have been pretty easy.
I hope she picks it up in the next match though.

McHale completel dropped her level after 4-1 up. She was very aggressive in the first 5 games, sending the balls with high pace and very deep. After that, mostly short balls that Sharapova ate for breakfast. :o Of course, Pova was the one applying pressure at key moments, which decided the outcome of both sets.

In short, another sad example of choking.

was waiting for the choking comment. Maria started being more aggressive and hitting deeper at 1-4 after hogstedt came down. set up pts brilliantly and smacked 6 winners in 8 pts to hold and break back before becoming passive and faltering again.

Anyway, now everyone can see what "clay" was in Madrid

For once we'll agree -- ;) This tournament will be a big deception for anybody who thought Madrid and Stuttgart were even close to what true clay is about, grinding, rallying to death, getting stuck in that dirty mud [...] -- :cheer:

:hearts: At least Maria showed she can cope with that like today. :worship:

RG is going to have a big surprise winner just like the past years :cheer: --

Mchale hit some big forehands from the little I saw, I thought she was a pusher

vozas
May 15th, 2012, 02:04 PM
Yeah McHale hit an inside in forehand winner loaded with spin down the line when she was like 3 metres behind the baseline.

Stats aren't as bad as I expected. I got the feeling Maria made 2 errors for every winner actually.

Maria needs to start creating the angles sooner other than rallying to the middle of the court. She can't finish points quickly on pace alone because these courts are so slow and high bouncing, but she can sure work those angles and shorten the points because counterpunchers are gonna e a nightmare here.

Christina McHale is a really talented young player YET the USA media haven't talked about her much. McHale has already beaten Kuznetsova and Wozniacki and Kvitova. McHale had a 4-2 lead in the first set and I believe a 5-4 lead but she got tight. Maria did indeed scrape through I thought this match would be easier for Sharapova.

What? This is their second match. The first was an easy victory for Sharapova in McHale's second main draw appearance in a WTA event.

Anyway, disappointing for McHale to let the lead slip in the first set and have her level drop at 5-5 again in the second.

I don't think McHale gets the respect she deserves. Many seem to belittle her

Tell you one thing, if some of the more "TALENTED" players had 50% of her gusto, they would be serious contenders

And I'm positive, Maria didn't think her a easy target

This is actually a solid win for Maria. McHale is a very good and it would have been a big mistake on Maria's part to take her lightly. Christina has beaten Kvitova and Wozniacki and wouldn't have been daunted by the prospect of playing Maria. If Maria had been spraying balls left and right, she would have been in big trouble.

My disdain for Melanie Oudin is well documented, but I adore Christina McHale. She and Sloan Stephens are my favorite young Americans.

That was a pretty tough match. I'm pleasantly surprised to see McHale go for more shots, hit aggressive inside-out forehands, and get to net. That will be the key for her to get to the next level. She would have beaten over half the players left in the draw for sure.

Will she be seeded for RG?

Maria applied pressure at the right times and toughed it out like you'd expect her to. She needs to move a little bit better to make it through this draw.

McHale played a very good match indeed - went for her FH a lot, painted all the lines on the court and scrambled every reachable ball back. Maria's ROS are just a bit too messy nowadays, hence the close scoreline. I hope she improves them again, because since Miami she is botching a lot of easy routine shots...
