Sad to see Fran like that. No passion, not even when she broke with that winner for *45.

The commentators said that when she had her coach on she said to him that she has "no strength"

Schiavone has had her day in the sun. I like her very much as a tennis player and personality, much the same as I liked Patty Synder. By the way, I hope Patty's financial woes are temporary. It seems not, however.

It seems like Francesca already knows she would retire after the olympics. I'm sure she would have huge motivation to succeed in the olympics, and maybe she will :)

it's all mental you can tell....not phisical...this is just not the player we all know as Francesca, it's a shadow of her, I cannot believe she lost all the motivation, she based all her succes on motivation, very sad indeed

So upset for Fran, but it had to come I suppose

On the other hand, Ekat played a lovely match and well done to her :yeah:

She looked absolutely gorgeous out there.. I can see a sort of maturity about her now.

Good luck next round Ekat.

Seeing a match like this makes you realise how integral Fran's passion for the game is for her to succeed, given that her main strengths (unbelievable athleticism mixed with great point construction) are worn right down.

Erm, she tremendously overachieved and must be over the moon with her career. It is pathetic seeing a GS champ being demolished by everyone so do retire after the Olympics, please! :)

Makarova has to improve, then she can be in Top 20 for many many years.

Today, she was solid. Even on defense, she was solid.

Yup. All Katya needs for a top 20 ranking is a little bit more consistency. But she is getting there. A couple of more wins this week and Katya will be in the top 20 in the race rankings. With Nastya M. in her corner, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Katya in the top 20 before the end of the year. Why not? She's got the talent.

As for Fran, well it is pretty obvious Fran is going the other way. Doesn't mean I share some of the other posters in this forum's desire to see her retire. That is a decision for her to make on her own. Personally, even if Fran is now far from her best tennis and I would say very unlikely to ever recapture that level, I still think she is fun to have around and even now on a rare good day, she can still do some pretty nifty things.

Schiavone was awful, especially in first set!
So many errors, no real tactics, just bad, Makarova was really solid but nothing special, wasnīt forced to do more anyway!

well I realized I've been a bit hash and I obviously don't want her to retire but it saddened me to watch the end of this match with no 'sparkle' in Fran's game . I was hoping Rome would be a good place to gain some confidence back but ...maybe in Strasbourg next week .. and hopefully she has a good showing at RG .
Forza Fran ! :rocker:

Well if Fran herself wants to retire at some point soon all I can say is congrats on a pretty brilliant career that certainly outdid most people's expectations of her. I also hope she is able to produce one or two more highlights before calling it a day.

Really hope she can spring one more big result somewhere this year. Why not the Olympics? I've always had a soft spot for Fran because it was obvious she played the game with immense passion, something we barely see anymore. Think I speak for all fans of the game at large rather than just fans of specific players that it'll be a sad day when she retires, which seems to be looming.

For someone who wont even be seeded, Makarova seems to be on a three year run of ramping up right before, and then peaking at a slam. Ever since Eastbourne a couple of years ago, she is a threat right before a slam, and a threat to reach the quarters at a slam.

 Not surprising though. She's what .... 32? She must be exhausted after all the years of hard work.

Agreed. Like Safina's 13 month run in which she made 3 slam finals, became number 1, and won countless tournaments, Fran had a miracle run and stretched itto 2 1/2 years. Wins Fed Cup in 09, FO in 10, another Fed Cup in 10, and an unexpected run to the FO final in 11. Plus, I still think she never recovered physically from the AO match vs Sveta last year. Those 4+ hrs took a couple of years off her career.

I still have hope she would have some wins @ RG, as I expect it would be her last tournament (oh wait forget she will probably play in the Olympic :sobbing:).

Whatever it may be.

I am proud of her and grateful to be one of her fans.

FORZA SCHIAVONE!!

Yeah people should stop telling Fran to retire. She'll retire when she's good and ready, and has earned the right to make that decision on her own terms.

It will be sad if she doesn't have at least one more decent RG run :sobbing:

Fran :( I want her to do well; I love her passion and I love how she plays. It's unfortunate that she isn't playing to her potential right now.

Ekaterina is a great player, and she has a lot of good tennis to play still. She will be a perennial dangerous floater, and will probably end up with a few more quarters or a semi in her career.

Safina didnīt peak late after 10 years as a mid-level player and her run only stopped, because of an injury. They have nothing in common.

Couldn't have said it better! Hopefully Fran will retire on her own terms when she wants to. When that happens the loss will ours, not hers.
