Anne has a very good chance during the clay season to reclaim her top ranking from Elena Baltacha. If Anne plays well in Budapest, Cagnes-sur-Mer and Prague and Baltacha plays poorly then this will happen. In general Anne has played better tennis so far this year than Elena.

Well, she loses R1 in Estoril

She's not on the list for Prague....She's playing Cagnes-sur-Mer, Rome and Brussels ;)

EDIT: apparently her website is incorrect, she's playing Strasbourg- not brussels

well she still has a chance...

next Monday Baltacha will fall to 70 and Keothavong will remain steady around 75 or 76..

depending on both players performance in Cagnes-Sur-Mer, Keothavong is closing the gap on Baltacha...

It's just a shame that the gap is closing due to Elena losing points, rather than Anne gaining them.

2011 YE rankings were 50 and 73 respectively. I feel that it's a hollow victory to regain the GB number 1 place due to falling more slowly than Elena is.

i disagree Anne has played better tennis than Elena this year...

Not saying she hasn't.

But that is a function of Elena playing like shit (non-ranking Fed Cup in Eilat aside), not of Anne climbing the rankings.

The pressure has been off Anne, she did not win a match on clay last year and Elena did very well so Anne can play her game, if Anne racks up a few wins she will be back in the top spot.

I feel sorry for Bally, nobody works harder but her game is just not there right now.

A bit of help for Anne in this particular race today. Elena just lost her R1 match in Cagnes.

I would imagine Elena will retire at the end of the season, if she can't get her game back. She had talked about the possibility, but after her career-best season in 2011, it seemed like she might continue, if she could keep that up.

Bagelled.

At this rate, we won't have a home hope in the Olympics.

disaster day for Bally and Anne today..

what the hell was Anne doing today, 2-6 0-6

yes the Olympic British participation (minus Murray) looks bad.

Anne finally has a chance to win back her top ranking tomorrow if she beats Czink of Hungary.

This is a match that is Anne's for the taking, her first RG win but with Anne she has to hold her nerve and not freeze when she is ahead- this is a huge match for her.

my heart says she will win but my head does not so it would be great for Anne to prove she can do it.

Anne is a disgrace, I am sorry..

A disgrace? Really? She's playing badly- these things happen, it's really not that much of a big deal  She's a tennis player, she'll have some good runs and some bad runs- it doesn't make her a disgrace. At the end of the day SHE'S the tennis player, you really have no right to call her a disgrace :weirdo:

Yes, Anne's playing poorly but your constant whining in Anne's sub forum is incredibly irritating- you may be disappointed but I'm sure Anne is a lot more disappointed than you are. At the end of the day, this is a cheering thread not a bashing one- criticism, of course, is acceptable but not when it's non-constructive.

And did anyone really EXPECT her to beat Melinda? In all honesty, I kind of expected this scoreline- she's never even won a main draw match at RG.

a disgrace maybe a little harsh i admit however I think Anne urgently needs to re-evaluate her game, my concern also is that she does not have a full time coach which is something she needs if she is to keep playing. Anne must feel frustrated like her fans do but how many times is she going to go out on a court and lose a match? I did not predict a 6-1 6-2 defeat to Czink, i thought she would lose but not by a heavy score.

lets not pussy foot around here neither Anne or Elena Baltacha are good enough to be at the forthcoming Olympics and I also feel they dont deserve a wildcard, that honour should go to Heather Watson.

I want to see Anne playing well again but she needs a kick up the backside from somebody in the game or she may as well quit...
