Charleston remains a special place for Jane

Interview with Jane Wong .

Q: how special is this tournament to you?
A: well this is where it all started, although technically the first tournament is in Hilton Head, but I think we all now treated this place as the anniversary tournament. I never believe that I would have played here 13 years later, this is very surreal for me .

Q: why wouldn't you believe it?
A: well back then, I would have thought that I probably have moved on my now, have a family, have a new job etc... But it amaze me that this tour is still here , and I feel a responsibility to support. He tournament director Joshua and many players are still helping out, I admit I did not contribute much, I can only continue support through playing.

Q: it seems you have not given much interview nowadays, many players think that you have isolated yourself , what you think of that?
A: well I admit I am not the most sociable person and I am sorry that I did not contribute much nowadays, but there are other things I need to do, in tennis I only have time for training and playing matches though I keep losing in first rounds that actually tennis does not occupy me with much the anymore hahah.

Q: What is your expectation for this tournament and for the rest of the year.
A: well for starter, I want to participate in the Olympics, that's my aim for the year, I will like to help china in defending Fed cup also. For this tournament, I do not have much expectation, I have to admit that I am not 20 years old anymore and cannot run as fast. But I am in middle of changing my game to fit my age, by relying more finess and less on speed. I hope it works out.

An easy win for Miranda today who was on and off the court in under and hour.

Candy didn't feel confident about her abilities here in Charleston, but now she finds herself in the main draw.

Amelie Szczotka-Strozna def. [WC]Miranda Bothavska 6/4, 7/5
This was a surprisingly quick match as Amelie showed complete dedication to make the main draw.

Emma Anderson def. [8]Martine Kartincova 7/5, 6/3
The Aussie Emma gets her second win today to move onwards and stops Martine from qualifying.

Singles Results, First Round

[1]Pamela Bowden def. Vittoria Perez 6/2, 7/6(4)
A flame up erupted in Charleston over the Spanish Fed Cup team and Vittoria was clearly distracted against Pammy today.

Sabine Graf def. [Q]Candela Sanchez 7/5, 6/2
The Spaniards aren't doing themselves any favors with this drama as Sabine takes advantage to move onwards.

Berenika Wojnarowska def. Kathleen Pryde-Degman 7/5, 7/5
Kathleen doesn't like the clay and it was evident in her footwork in her loss to Berenika.

[6]Fleri Hingisafrilia def. Siri Cornetsson 5/7, 7/6(1), 7/6(1)
This was an extremely tough first round match but Fleri fought her way in three incredibly tight sets.

[7]Ziyi Zianzhi def. [Q]Mart Sanchez 6/3, 3/6, 7/6(4)
Another Spaniard bites the dust and Ziyi tries to regroup to prepare for Roland Garros.

Alexandra Anastadis def. Yelena Pirilenko 0/6, 6/2 6/4
Alex had a last minute change of opponent but handled it after being blanked in the first set.

Cristina-Elena Vladimirescu def. [Q]Emma Anderson 0/6, 6/4, 6/2
Another walkabout in the first set, this time for Cristina as she had to adjust to the clay before finally defeating Emma.

[4]Harper Johnson def. [WC]Susan Day 6/4, 4/6, 7/6(2)
Susan couldn't keep up her momentum and lost in the first round of this all-American match-up.

[Q]Amelie Szczotka-Strozna def. [3]Ella Felivitch 6/4, 7/6(4)
When Ameile goes on a run, it's hard to stop her and here is she defeating the US Open champion.

Luna-Willow Bartoli def. [WC]Regla Torres 3/6, 7/5, 7/6(5)
And now it's official as all 4 Spaniards lost in the first round from distraction of their Fed Cup drama. Luna gladly takes the win.

Yoona Im def. Nthamangela Mbangu-Zeric 7/6(2), 4/6, 6/4
Nthama is having a hard time finding traction in her final year on tour as this time she loses to a tenacious Yoona.

[5]Chantal Chan def. Alijah Pemovic 7/5, 3/6, 7/5
Chantal hit a bit of a bump in her amazing short career but seems to be back with this win over Alijah.

[8]Jennifer Casanova def. Jookkarae Mensarb 6/3, 2/6, 7/5
Jennifer is hoping for something special in Charleston, but almost lost in in the first round against the tough Jook.

Mia Henriksson def. Samantha Soren 7/5, 1/6, 6/3
These two players were both dark horses for this event so it's a shame they had to play first round. Mia gets another great win.

Jane Wong def. Cornelia du Preez 7/6(5), 5/7, 6/4
History was on Jane's side in this one as she is one of the few originals still left playing the game. Cornelia gave it a good try but came up short.

Marteena Huubere def. [2]Ruflina Taliamanosoko 7/5, 2/6, 6/3
Ruflina loves this event, but was taken out by Marteena in an all-veteran first round match-up.

Singles Results, Second Round

[1]Pamela Bowden def. Sabine Graf 6/4, 4/6, 7/5
Pammy continues her amazing consistency, which just pads to her lead as the #1 player in the world.

[6]Fleri Hingisafrilia def. Berenika Wojnarowska 4/6, 7/6(6), 6/4
Fleri came oh so close to defeat (yet again) but managed to pull this victory out of her you-know-what against Berenika.

[7]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Alexandra Anastadis 7/6(3), 4/6, 6/4
Alex was humbled to play Ziyi at this prestigious event, but couldn't pull the trigger in the end as Ziyi moves to the quarters.

Cristina-Elena Vladimirescu def. [4]Harper Johnson 0/6, 6/4, 6/2
Cristina was blanked in the first set again, but came clawing back to victory over the American favorite.

[Q]Amelie Szczotka-Strozna def. Luna-Willow Bartoli 7/6(4), 6/3
Amelie's time in Charleston is turning out to be quite successful as she just notched her fourth win in a row.

[5]Chantal Chan def. Yoona Im 2/6, 7/6(5), 6/2
After losing the second set, Yoona's steam ran out and Chantal marched onwards toward victory.

Mia Henriksson def. [8]Jennifer Casanova 7/6(4), 7/6(5)
And sadly for the fans, the last American is eliminated at their only clay tournament. Mia just continues her amazing 2012.

Jane Wong def. Marteena Huubere 6/7(4), 7/6(6), 7/5
Jane and Marteena gave this crowd all they could handle today - two 12 year veterans battling it out at FWTT's birthday tournament and going the distance was quite the fun for the crowd (and Jane too).

Where are the rest of the winners?
The winners are not interested in Charleston! Disqualify all of them and let the losers who turn up move into the second round!:p:lol:

Singles Results, Quarterfinals

[6]Fleri Hingisafrilia def. [1]Pamela Bowden 2/6, 7/6(7), 6/2
You can't get much closer than this match and Fleri has plenty good reason to be excited. With a victory over the current #1, she has shown she could possibly be the next top ranked player in the world.

[7]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Cristina-Elena Vladimirescu 7/6(3), 4/6, 7/5
Ziyi really needed this event to regain her confidence as she was in a serious pit. Cristina wasn't an easy opponent today, but with this victory she finds herself n the semifinals.

[5]Chantal Chan def. [Q]Amelie Szczotka-Strozna 7/6(5), 2/6, 6/2
Chantal, whom many thought would replace Pammy at #1, is in a resurgence and takes out the surprise quarterfinalist.

Jane Wong def. Mia Henriksson 7/6(2), 7/6(4)
Jane makes this event one for the Chinese as three of the four semifinalists hail from the reigning Fed Cup nation. Mia continues to do well, despite losing here today.

Doubles Results, Quarterfinals

Afanasyeva/Im def. [1]Casanova/Taliamanosoko 6/4, 1/6, 7/5
Jennifer and Ruflina, despite their successes, have really hit a slump and continue to lose to surprise teams. This time it was Daria and Yoona.

[4]Anastadis/du Preez def. Banaszek/Torres 7/5, 7/5
Coco and Alex keep up their winning ways and hope to take home the coveted crown of Family Circle Cup champion.

[8]Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman def. Anderson/Huubere 2/6, 6/3, 7/6(1)
Fleri (along with Kathleen) had to defeat her Fed Cup compatriots in this tight three set match.

[7]Graf/Mbangu-Zeric def. Pirilenko/Soren 7/5, 1/6, 6/2
Nthama does well with these random doubles partners, every few events, and Charleston looks to be one as she and Sabine take out Yelena and Sam.

[5]Chantal Chan def. Jane Wong 3/6, 7/6(3), 7/5
Chantal had to defeat the player that she grew up watching and did so in come-from-behind action. Jane was tough, but Chantal was a bit quicker in that second set tiebreaker.

Getting To Know... Amelie Szczotka-Strozna

Amelie is one of the biggest surprises in this season so far.
In Auckland - her first event as a senior she defeated world no. 2 Ruflina
Taliamanosoko en route to win the title. A week later she won her first doubles
title in Hobart alongside Yanina Wickmayer. After these great successes she
kinda faded away. Now, right at the start of the clay season she made yet another
good result. She qualified for the main draw in Charleston and won two matches
there. We sat down and had a little chat with Amelie after her
quarterfinal loss to Chantal Chan.

Amelie heading to the airport after her quarterfinal loss.

Where is your home town and where did you grew up?
A: I was born in Chorzow, but I grew up in Bytom and that's
were I spent my childhood.

How did you start playing tennis?
A: I started playing when I was 8 years old. I never was into sports
before, but my best friend was practising and she took me to the courts
one time. I hit the ball a few times and I liked it, so my dad signed me
up right away. After some time my friend gave up, but I already loved this sport!

Tell us a little bit about your family?
A:My father, Jakub, is a plastic surgeon and my mom, Melanie, is a
biology teacher. They met at the university. I also have two younger
sisters, Paula and Wiktoria. They are both 16. They were born in the
same year, but they are not twins! That's funny.

How would you describe your game? What are your strengths?
A:I think that I can say that I'm a good all-court player.
I can hit the ball quite hard from both sides. Also my first
serve can be dangerous. Unfortunately, I still have to work
on my second serve - it's really poor. Also consistency
and mentality. There's still a lot to improve in my game,
but I work really hard every day.

And what's your favorite surface?
A:I don't have a favourite one. I like them all!

What's your favorite tournament?
A:Well, it's Auckland obviously! I can't wait for the Wimbledon.
And I like it here, in Charleston, too.

Do you have any friends on tour?
A:Not many yet. I'm quite shy and that's a big problem.
But I like Yanina with whom I won doubles in Hobart, also the other pole
on tour - Berenika Wojnarowska. Miranda Bothavska is a nice girl, too.
And Aveta, I played doubles with her in this tournament.

If you weren't a tennis player, what job would you like to do?
A:I think it would be something related to biology. Maybe a doctor.

How do you relax away from the courts?
A:I listen to music, watch movies or TV series. I'm surfing the internet.
Also when I visit new places I like to go sightseeing. And as every woman
I love shopping!

If you could meet one person in the world, who would it be?
A:That's a tough question. Right now I'm in love with Florence and The
Machine's new album, so I have to say Florence Welch!

What are your short and long-term goals?
A:I don't have any specfic goals. I want improve my game and have fun
on court. Of course my dream is to win a Grand Slam and be no. 1 in the world,
but I focus on other things right now.

Chantal into Charleston final "It's an honour for me"

http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/03NE8iZdyNaoI/610x.jpg
Chantal hits her favourite backhand against veteran Jane Wong in today's semifinal

Charleston, SC, USA Family Circle Cup is among the first events in FWTT Tour, and in its 13th Edition, world No.5 Chantal Chan from Hong Kong reached her second final of the year, defeating her idol Jane Wong in a 2.5-hour thriller, 3-6 7-6(5) 7-5 is the scoreline.

"It's always a great experience for me to play against Jane, although i won all our four encounters, all our matches were three-setters and i had to fight every single point to be victorious, especially on this clay surface, where you have to work on every shots and every steps." "It's an awesome feeling playing on this court full of history, as this is the first event in the 13-year-old FWTT Tour, there is a stellar list of champions and it's a great honour for me to be part of it by playing in the final tomorrow, i will definitely go for it!" She will play against Australian Open champion Fleri Hingisafrilia, who has had an amazing 2012.

About the recent drama concerning the Spanish players, Chantal has the following comments. "Well, they are always known for exciting drama, espcially Vittoria, i saw her running into male strangers in the players' party this week and nearly want to hit her long-time rival Candela Sanchez. Also i saw Regla doing a lot of tricks on other Spanish players, like Marta, who cried throughout the party after being sticked with a chair with a gum on it! I really wish i can have a safe tournament in Barcelona next week and wish they can be more like professionals. (although i kind of enjoy them!)"

Wish everyone a happy easter!

[5]Chantal Chan def. [6]Fleri Hingisafrilia 7/5, 4/6, 7/6(0)
Chantal was the one to finally knock Fleri out of a tiebreak and ultimately the tournament in this third set. She had to fight tooth and nail for her first final (and win over the Australian Open champion) but gets it, securing her place in the top 10.
