Yari wins POTW for the second time in three weeks after another strong run in Strasbourg, and she now has 3 aces to use this week :yeah:

Odds On

We have two clear favourites for the title this season, unfortunately only one of them will advance to the quarter-finals. Hercog and Cibulkova are due to face off in round one, Polona has had the edge, beating Domi en route to titles in Rome and Strasbourg but the Amelia Island winner will be keen to ensure she doesn't succumb for a third week in a row. It's been a surprisingly low-key clay season for Henin, but last season's runner-up is always one to watch and loves the big stage, she's the best bet to take advantage of the Hercog-Cibulkova clash.

Solid Bets

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/namedImage/12781/player_130533.jpg http://www.tennis.com/players/images/wta/edementieva.jpg http://www.tennis.com/players/images/wta/vzvonareva.jpg

I am including Myskina here solely based on her ranking :o She was a dominant force on clay in the past but seems to have lost some focus, maybe she can channel the ghost of Maria Sanchez Lorenzo and get it back :p Dementieva has also been quiet but she strikes me as the perfect candidate for a random Slam-winning run and has had some strong results in the past to back her up. Finally Vera gets mention by virtue of being the defending champion and having 4 aces, even though you'd think she had 0 looking at her clay results thus far :o

ATC #6 Justine Henin becomes the second player from Belgium since Kim Clijsters in Season 3 and 4 to win the coveted Roland Garros title on Saturday, defeating Russian sweetheart Maria Kirilenko 6-3 6-2 in just under an hour. This is her first ever career title in her fourth career final.

Mod: Congratulations Justine on your first title- a slam! How do you feel on your victory today?
JH: Thank you very much. I'm just so glad that I finally win a title. I've been longing for one since I started playing on the tour last season. I always know that I have the potential to do it but I hadn't have any luck. Luckily this time the lucky star shines upon me.

Mod: Before everything else, let's start with your match today. What has been the important factor that leads to your win?
JH: Definitely a few things. Firstly, I'm a better claycourter than Maria. Not that she's bad, she beat some good players to reach the final here, but she was kind of lucky she didn't face any true claycourter in this event. May I know who did she beat on her way to the final?

Mod: Sharapova, Tanasugarn and Hingis.
JH: See. I was right. Sharapova? Please, I can't even believe she was a winner here just 2 seasons ago. Such a fluke. Then Tammy, is it? She is pretty tricky but rarely a huge threat on clay. If she didn't become a part timer, she could've had better results. And finally, Hingis? The lucky loser? (laughs). Seriously, Maria couldn't be happier with such a kind draw. I don't blame her, it's just a pity that she had to be embarrassed by me eventually. She is a nice girl though, we all know that.

Mod: Okay, so back to the topic, what else that contributed your win on Roland Garros, your first title ever.
JH: Well, not that I'm not putting effort, but I actually played smart leading to this tournament. I am a well known claycourter. Despite winning nothing the past weeks, it doesn't stop me from believing to myself that I'm actually better than what I am. I know I have the ability to win any clay title, it's just that I don't want to expose much of my game tactics and I had some experimenting with my game as well. I am happy that my game plan during this clay season works as what I expected.

Mod: How was the whole event for you? Any comments?
JH: It's definitely a tricky draw for me to be honest. I could easily lose to anyone as my opponents are definitely tougher. Luckily I have the experience which helped me a lot, especially against Domi in the semis. She was like my curse. I think I never won her in our 6 previous meetings and only managed like 2 tiebreaks sets from her. Anyway, luckily I won one that matters to me the most. Oudin is also a very tricky player, much like Tammy. But like Tammy, being a part time player doesn't help one's career much.

Mod: We've seen the defending champion Vera and huge title favourite Polona bowed out early. Any reason why?
JH: Well, for Bepa, her win last year was a fluke, just like Sharapova's. And she should just be ashamed of herself for being a claycourter, yet unable to win anything on clay. I'm happy she will be out of top 10 now when the rankings are to be released soon. As for Colona or whoever her name is, well, I believe she's a nice girl a good clay player, but she can win Rome and Strasbourg. Props to her. She may be the one to watch in the future.

Mod: Besides winning here, seems like you are having a good season so far.
JH: Yeah, absolutely, I definitely have better results than last season. Mostly because I have more experience with all these match playing. Apart from that, I also have to thank my coach for guiding me and believing me throughout all these. He's such a great coach. He managed to help Misa (former #1 and 2 time Wimbledon champion) getting all her achievements and I admire Misa so much. She was one of my idols coming into the tour. I was happy she came to watch my final and saw my triumph on red clay.

Mod: Now you won a slam and got to career high #3. What do you wish for your future in the tour?
JH: Not that I'm greedy or what, but who doesn't want to always keep playing well and win as many as possible? I do hope my good season will continue. Next up is the grass season, which isn't really my favourite surface but I'll try my best. I had a couple of nice wins last season and hope to defend some points there and then we will head to hard court season in the US, in which is a very competitive season. Many players thrive their best on that surface. I'll look forward to all the matches and hopefully I will get better results than the disaster I had last year, especially during the indoors season.

Mod: Thank you Justine and congrats once again. All the best for the rest of the season.
JH: Your welcome and thank you too. One more thing from my coach to the haters out there, "I'M BACK B*TCHES!!!!" :oh:

An Interview with Maria Kirilenko

Q: Maria, this must be a difficult loss, but please tell us your thoughts on the match.
MK: Yeah, it's OK (laughs). It was a tough one today for me. I woke up this morning with a few injuries and I tried my best but it wasn't enough today. Justine was just so aggressive and really wasn't missing much. Plus, her coach was giving her a lot of tips and advice from the stands which I'm sure influenced her tactics today. It just wasn't my day, but I'm used to that in slams so...

Q: Would you classify this tournament as a success?
MK: Oh, absolutely. It's my fourth career slam final and my second at Roland Garros. I really enjoy this tournament and won the matches I was supposed to, and I'm back in the Top 8 now. I can't really complain today. I just need a US Open Final now to complete the MK Bridesmaid Slam :hearts:

Q: Talk about your draw. Justine implied you were lucky to reach the final...
MK: Look, she can say whatever she wants. It's no secret that Justine and her coach talk some big talk and get a big ego when things go their way. It's true I didn't play any four-acers on my way to the final, but I played some really talented and experienced girls, and sometimes that is a bigger challenge than a rookie player with a few more weapons. Maria Sharapova is the #1 player in the world, has won three slams including this one. Tamarine Tanasugarn is still going strong at age 44 and just had one of her best seasons last year and has won two slams. To me, I think these are some big wins. It's not like Justine had a tough draw either. Dani doesn't like clay, Melanie has been MIA all season and Dominika is a certified choker (sorry girl). I think we all saw I beat Hercog in straight sets in Amelia Island as well as Wozniacki, so I have wins against four acres this clay court swing anyway.

Q: Justine has been going after a lot of players in her post-match interview, what do you think about that?
MK: Oh, let her have her moment. Look, she deserves this title. She is clearly a good player. But I get the feeling that this is all she has going for her at the moment. I have my fashion, I have my boyfriend, I have my endorsements, I have friends and family. I think Justine is lonely and walking onto Court Phillipe Chartrier is the closest she is going to get to a man for a while so... if she needs to go after everyone and re-assure us all she is amazing, be my guest. Besides, I beat her four times on Plexi the last two seasons all in straight sets with a closer ace difference between us, so when we're on a more even playing field, I think I've shown whose boss. I have no doubt I would have routined her in Melbourne. I only lose to scrubs there.

Q: Are you ever going to get that slam?
MK: Who knows? And you know what, I'm OK with that. I've achieved so much on the tour. I am the only player who has survived from the very first tournament and I have maxed my potential. Players respect me. I've been #1. I've played in 21 finals. I have 11 titles, I've won the YEC, I'm the Auckland GOAT, I have titles on four surfaces. I'm in the Hall of Fame! If players like A. Radwanska, Rezai and now Henin are winning slams, I'm not sure this is exactly something I want to win anyway...

Q: What's next for MK?
MK: I'm looking to work my way back up the rankings. I had a really tough season last year after Gold Coast, I really went through some personal issues and confidence problems but I really feel like I got my groove back now. I love Grass and I'm looking forward to winning again at Birmingham and Eastbourne, and getting another shot at the Wimbledon title.

Q: Thank you.
