Thrilling times in Sweden - Part II

Whereas Siri Cornetsson is an established tennis player for years now on FWTT, her 24 year old sister Ronja is a promising Swedish author whose works are already bestsellers in Scandinavia. Born in a family of athlets with two siblings who are professional tennis players Siri (22) and Göran (27), Ronja Cornetsson combines in her thrillers crime and sport in a unique way. Her first masterpiece was Russian Pirouette about a mysterious murder on a figure skater in 2009, her second book Golf in Sheepskin treated scary events in a golf club in 2010 and last year in 2011 she revealed her third thriller Broken in the Tiebreak dedicated to the tennis sport. There was no better release date than the FWTT tournament in Bastad (http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=439583&page=2).

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d18/drimal_/theauthor.jpg

This tennis thriller became an overwhelming success and won the proud author the Swedish crime prize "Bästa svenska kriminalroman" in 2011. The movie industry has become interested in it as well as the work will be filmed through spring and summer 2012.

Good reasons to meet the famous sister Ronja one more time as she is making holidays with her husband in Miami and supporting Siri at the so called 5th Slam of FWTT. The city who is also famous for the location of the crime series CSI Miami.

Q: Nice to meet you, Ronja. First of all can you give us a few more details why Siri doesn't want to give any interviews in the near future?
Ronja: Siri needs some time for herself at the moment and I think journalists should accept it. I don't want to comment any further on that question.

Q: Ok, let's focus on your work. What were your feelings after winning that award?
Ronja: I felt really honoured about that award. I feel a bit like entering a unique club, like Grand Slam winners in tennis.

Q: Broken in a Tiebreak - the title itself is already well chosen, with a double sense and also a bit of self irony considering Siri's often close losses...
Ronja: Like I said last year I like playing with words. My sister is known for her self irony as you know and I like that too. There are also several funny parts in it, I got inspired from the bitchiness of the tour and background infos from Siri. Post match catfights or cold handshakes, that's all part of the tennis world.

Q: For those who haven't read the book tell us a bit about it. Has there been any inspirations for the main character or other figures?
Ronja: Sofia Hellström is a very ambitious 18 year old Swedish tennis player who is considered the most promising tennis talent for the future. Having reached US Open and Australian Open semifinal she now wants to finally win her first Grand Slam at prestigious Wimbledon. Her main concurrent to the title is 20 year old Alice Walker from Great Britain, which include two close losses at the pre mentionned semifinals. There is an intense rivalry on internet tennis forums among both fanships. Whereas Sofia is described as a brainless ballbasher with no Plan B by the fans of the Dutch, the fans of the Swede call Alice an opportunist pusher who is lucky to play in a weak era. There are quite some amusing parts of this at the beginning of the book.
Little do these mostly teenage fanboys know that somewhere in a dark room a psychopath is planning the destruction of Sofia Hellström.

Q: A vile stalker doing psycho terror.
Ronja: Yes it all starts by some lame comments on her fanpage, then mysterious rings in the middle of the night, anonymous letters and finally pursuits in the darkness. The scary stranger is astonishingly well informed about the locations of the tennis players, the training times and so on. To add more suspens I have written most parts in the perspective of Sofia Hellström and the more the story advances the more frightened she becomes and her way to self destruction is raising with each threat and each incident. She doesn't dare to speak about it to anyone.

Q: One can also feel a bit of critcism of the huge mental pressure built on young athlets by everybody.
Ronja: I know very well that expectation pressure built on a young tennis player can be unbearable. Sofia Hellström is still a teenager and people often seem to forget that athlets aren't machines. I also wanted to point out that often the pressure is coming from parents too. Sofia's father is a former tennis player who couldn't succeed and now his daughter has to conclude what he couldn't - becoming a grand slam champion.

Q: You got the most praise for your courage to describe schizoprenia. How did you came up with that surprising turning point?
Ronja: I always want to surprise the lector and I think I have succeeded in my intentions. I have studied myself into the serious subject which is schizophrenia for this book. There was a little hint between the lines in that mirror scene early in the book when Sofia is seeing things which aren't reality. But it only gets obvious at the end of the book with the Wimbledon part. The most scary part of the book is when Sofia "recognizes" her stalker as the chair umpire in the final of Wimbledon against Walker.

Q: Broken in the Tiebreak will now be filmed starting in May 2012. Tell us more about it.
Ronja: The shooting time will last from May 2012 to August 2012. It is a British/Scandinavian coproduction and the movie location will mostly be in London, except for a few parts in Stockholm.

Q: You promised us to reveal the secret about the film cast today.
Ronja: I think we've got a really good mixture of young talented actors/actresses and some experienced ones. Danish actress Stine Fischer Christensen will play the main role of Sofia Hellström. She has already proven her talent in several movie dramas like After the Wedding in 2006 and she can speak Swedish fluently too which is important as the interactions with her coach will be in Swedish with English subtitles. Her coach Olle Friedensen will be played by Swedish actor Thomas Hanzon. British actress Rachel Hurd-Wood will play her main rival Alice Walker and we are very proud that we could convince Pierce Brosnan to play, he will take over the part of Alice's charismatic coach. Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen who is known for his evil roles will be seen as "the stalker" in the movie.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d18/drimal_/brokeninTT2.jpg

Q: I guess there will be alot of background actors in the movie, with a full stadium to be filled in the Wimbledon scenes. Then we’ve got some rumours that there were also some FWTT guest stars who will make an appearance in Broken in the Tiebreak.
Ronja: I think you can't imagine a movie dedicated to the tennis sport without some real tennis stars. I think it is normal that none of the current FWTT players has the time in their rough schedule to play several days for a movie. We were contacting several former FWTT stars over the past weeks. Most of these negociations failed because of various reasons. When we contacted Canadian FWTT legend Eva Sorrenta, and 2 times Wimbledon champion Paula Masterton they both were very friendly and humble and didn't ask an exorbitant fee like some of there collegues. They will both have 3 or 4 days of shooting in June. When Miranda Frost heard about the movie project and that Pierce Brosnan will be part of it, she really wanted to get a minor role too. She said that she will skip one or two G2 events for that in summer.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d18/drimal_/brokeninTTguests2.jpg
Q: That sounds exciting. Do you know already when the movie will come into the theatres?
Ronja: Approximately in spring 2013.

Q: Thanks alot for the interview, Ronja.

Alina Patersson - Press Conference

Q: Alina, you're 27, been playing for 6 years and you had two International level titles to your name before this. The last came three years ago, in 2009 at Palermo. How does it feel to be winning a tournament this big, which many regard as a 5th Grand Slam?

A: Hah, thanks for reminding me that I'm 27; don't you know it's disrespectful to discuss a woman's age in public? (Laughs) No, I know what you're saying, the game's definitely getting younger, well, except Ruflina, but there are always exceptions to the rule. My opponent today was 6 years younger than me. It is an unnerving fact. But I guess it doesn't affect me in a negative sense; it just gives me more motivation. In my opinion, I am as young, tennis-wise, as any 20 year old playing today. My career has seen so many stops and semi-starts that I don't think you can say that I am past my prime. Because I really don't know what my prime is. I've been so wildly inconsistent, followed up amazing patches of play with atrocious losing streak. This year, my goal was to play as if this was my first year on tour. I've had a rough first few months - I'd only won 5 matches before Miami - but it's part of starting from scratch. I guess this was the tournament where everything was destined to take off. It feels great, having all my and Ricardo(Sanchez)'s hard work pay off in this way. I mean, a week ago, I'd have been starved for a challenger win. I think I've skipped a few leagues. (smiles)

Q: Where do you go from here? Do you feel pressured to prove that this wasn't a flash in the pan?

A: You know, oddly enough, I'm not feeling that pressure as yet. Maybe because this has been such a shock, no one's really gotten over it and started talking. But we'll see what happens. I don't think anything I do can be called a flash in the pan. I mean, people have never questioned my talent; what's really been up in the air is my sanity. (laughs) So, we'll see how I handle. I'd like to think, that at the ripe old age of 27, I've matured enough to handle myself better than I did at the age of 21, when I started playing here.

Q: Why do you think you've been able to make this breakthrough?

A: Well, as I mentioned before, I've worked a lot over the off-season with Ricardo, and we've been really trying to streamline my game. He's actually been trying to make it a mixture of Jelena Jankovic and Maria Sharapova -defense and offence in the perfect ratio. It's worked this week, it's really clicked. Otherwise, I think an important factor is that, for the first time in my life, I'm relaxed, without any distractions or upheaval in my life. Before, I've always been busy, with marriage, divorce, re-marriage, pregnancy, fashion. Tennis kind of took a backseat. I've got my priorities straight now.

Q: Thank you so much Alina, and congratulations again. We look forward to seeing you next week in Charleston.

A: It was my pleasure, and yes, I hope I can replicate this result next week!
