Is Tereza the next Petra in the making?

She just won the 10K Bath indoor, as a qualifier. It was her second title of the year, and her career, after the 10K Stuttgart indoor, which she also won as a qualifier.

Bath was also her third final of year, after the 10K Leimen indoor, where she fell to Melanie Klaffner.

Tereza is currently ranked 640, and has no points to defend until June.

Well, Kawa eventually won the whole tournament in Prague, beating Voracova 6-4, 6-1 in the final ... so it´s pretty good that Tereza played a very close match with Kawa.

She could have won that match, but roughly in the middle of the second set, Kawa found a reliable winning strategy against Smitkova: to play high, looping topspin balls to Tereza´s backhand. Not only Smitkova proved to be unable to cope with these "moonballs" properly, but she was getting visibly frustrated and annoyed as well.

As for the third set, Tereza played very well in her return games (she broke Kawa three times) but unfortunately, she had quite a low percentage of first serves in and as a result she had great difficulties to hold her serve; almost all Kawa´s returns of Tereza´s second serves were high looping balls to Tereza´s backhand. ;) Tereza desperately needed good first serves in order to be able dictate the rallies in her service games.

****

And by the way, Tereza won the doubles title in Prague (with Jesika Maleckova), beating Anastasia Pivovarova / Arina Rodionova 6-1, 6-4 in the final: http://www.itftennis.com/procircuit/tournaments/women%27s-tournament/info.aspx?tournamentid=1100027212

Well, Kawa can play pretty good dropshots and DTL backhand winners as well. :) Her game plan was to play a few high topspin balls to Tereza´s backhand in a row and then - when she finally got a shorter / weaker reply from Tereza - to go for a DTL backhand winner or an unexpected dropshot.

And it was a pretty clever strategy, since it worked very well for her.

I watched this match yesterday. I really like her service action - long, loose, whole body being used - she generates a lot of ball speed. She was hitting really well off the ground, in good balance and hitting off her front foot - puts those long levers to good use. I think she was struggling a bit with hayfever though as she was blowing her nose every 5 minutes!

She owned me with her game and her emotions showed on court. From crying to laughing, from laughing to being angry, from being angry to being focused. And all of that in 30-40 seconds? :spit:

And new haters :oh: That's really when you know a player's arrived!

No haters, but pressed Bojana's fans.

For once I agree with JustPetko.
Safarova can destruct herself, or at least offer Tereza some chances. Just good luck, Queen. :inlove:

Bagelled in set 1 of R4 by Lucie. :sobbing: Lucie playing really well, Tereza too nervous. :( But a bagel is cruel.

Hopefully, she'll play more freely in set 2 and feel like she has nothing to lose after the bagel.

Safarova just kills anything which lands short or midcourt.

Irrespective of the result, its been a great performance thus far by Smitkova. 1st Grand Slam, 4th round etc.

Tears coming again from Smitkova at the moment. Don't think she's played too bad in the 2nd set but everything landing slightly long or wide and not quite working...Safarova simply played very well today.

0 & 2. No chances today against this Lucie, way too strong. Still disappointing she couldn't express her game at all mainly because of her nerves, but it's understandable, first time at such an important stage of a prestigious tournament, she's learning. She looked so upset with herself. :awww:

Congrats on this amazing run Terka! :cheer: :yeah:

I think the experience will put her in good stead and give her belief that reach majors in the future. Based on what I've seen of her in qualifying and MD R1-4, I still think Safarova would have won even if Smitkova had been playing better. I like Smitkova's serve and how well she can hit ground strokes when she's in balance but I think her movement could be better. Safarova, in comparison seemed the more dogged and tough(er) competitor, and used the whole court very well today. There are some useful learning points here for Smitkova. At 19 years old, there's a ton of potential upside :-)

From the Wimbledon site:

by Michael Beattie
Monday 30 June 2014

After two weeks, seven matches, and another teary-eyed finale, Tereza Smitkova’s Wimbledon odyssey is over.

The 19-year-old qualifier finally met her match against fellow Czech Lucie Safarova, who marches on to the quarter-finals of The Championships for the first time, after a clinical 6-0 6-2 win.

Unlike Bojana Jovanovski, beaten by Smitkova in three tight sets after ousting Victoria Azarenka, Safarova managed to carry the momentum of her own surprise win into a match she was widely expected to run away with. Smitkova’s fine serve and forehand have carried her far at the All England Club, but was disarmed by the world No.23’s movement and depth.

Smitkova got off to a nervy start on Court 18, firing a forehand that barely bounced before the backstop to give up a break in the opener, but settled down with a series of fine returns in the next game. Safarova was in no mood for charity, however, and peppered the baseline to move two breaks clear at 3-0. Try as she might, Smitkova was overwhelmed by Safarova in all departments, and the first set was over in 21 minutes.

The crowd produced its loudest cheer of the match when the world No.175 held serve at the start of the second, finally finding a way to soften up Safarova with a barrage of cross-court forehands into the left-hander’s backhand before picking her spot off the short ball. But it was a brief respite; a double fault handed the No.23 seed a break at 3-2, and from there the result was a formality. When Smitkova, teary-eyed towards the end of the encounter, hooked a forehand wide, Safarova yelled in delight and looked skyward before meeting her compatriot, smiling at last, at the net.

Both players had reason to be cheerful. Safarova now awaits her first Grand Slam quarter-final since the 2007 Austalian Open, where she will face 2013 Wimbledon semi-finalist Agnieszka Radwanska or No.22 seed Ekaterina Makarova. For Smitkova, there is the consolation of £117,000 in prize money – almost treble her career earnings to date – and 240 ranking points that will lift her within sight of the world’s top 100.

Tereza. Saw part of the match--overwhelmed by the occasion and FH was misfiring. Still EXCELLENT tournament, where she can now by a Porsche (better use that money wisely though ), and see her ascension into the Top 100, provisionally at #98!

Put into perspective, she lost one game more than Aga, a former Wimbledon finalist and top 3 player

Now, will someone please post her match against BoJo, so I can watch her at top form!

Lost to (6)Yvonne Meusburger in R1, 6-7(9) 6-4 5-7.

She had the match in her racket, was 5-3* up in final set, served for it at *5-4 and at this moment lost 3 games in a row.

Poor thing, she was heavily sobbing into her towel after the match was over. :awww:  Heartbreaking but this is new experience at WTA level for her, hopefully she will take something from it.

It's very hard to upset a high-ranked player usually (although this was not the case for Tereza at Wimbledon). She'll learn, but I hope she turns down the waterworks. Maybe she should hire Demekhine :p
