Whohoooo only 17 more days to go!
I'll probably get spanked again by the black piet because i've been a naughty girl this year :o

Sinterklaas The Story

According to legend, The Holly Nicolas was from the region Lycie in Azia, where he was born in the second half of the third century.

After his Uncle died he succeded him as bishop of Myra in Turkey.

The popularity of Nicolas Bishop of Myra is mainly because of all the miracles they say he created and all the good work he did with and for the children of Myra.

He died December 6th 342

His popularity shifted from East to west Europe around 1050.

And the first chapel dedicated to Bishop Nicolas of Myra was built in Nimwegen, many would follow.

As a miracle worker and protector of people in need and thanks to pilgrims and the crusades Nicolas was loved by all and mostly as protector of the sailors, merchants and coachman.

Goed-Heilig-man(Good-Holly-man) as he was called here for many years actually was a wrong pronounciation of the word Goed-Huwelijks-man wich means Good Marrige Man, for Lovers could count on his help to arrange a good marriage everywhere.

In the middleages there where many feasts to celebrate children and de demons of the dark, (winterfeasts) one of which our christmas tree came from.

And in The netherlands Sinterklaas is a combination of these before christmas legends.

Sinterklaas in 2002

Now days, Sinterklaas is a feast that starts arround the middle of November, when Sinterklaas arrives in The Netherlands by Steamer from his place of residence in Spain.

As he really is from Myra in Turkey this sounds strange, but in the middle ages all ships with riches and goody's came from spain, therefor, Sinterklaas is now resident of spain to the Dutch Children of today.

(this year 16 November) From his arrival on, every night children wil place there shoe next to the fireplace and sing him a song, hoping for sweets and or presents to be found in there shoe the next morning.

Sinterklaas does not come alone, he brings his staff, they are called black Pieten and there are a few diffrent legents on the (zwarte piet) black Piet story, but the most common is from one of the middleage feasts that children dressed as black devils would accompany the child bishop on his parade through the streets.

The placing of the shoe and eating sweets like Chocolate money, chocolate letters, Speculaas and Pepernoten, candy and marsepane will be done every night until the 5th of December, when there is a knock on every door where children live and a sack full of toy's and goody's will be left there by either Black Piet or Siterklaas.

Some are even very Lucky and then Sinterklaas and his Piet will visit them on the 5th of December to.

Then Sinterklaas or Bisshop Nicolaas will return to Spain and the goody's he has left us, will have to be eaten before christmas comes along.

Sinterklaas alway's carry's a big book, according to legend in there is written who is good and who is bad.

In the old day's the story would read; if you are really bad, in that book, Piet will put you in that sack in which he brings the goody's and take you to Spain. But we don't do that any more.

Sinterklaas also brings his trusty white stalion with whome he walks along the rooftops at night so the legent goes to bring all the goodys and Black piet will go down the chimney and drop them in the shoes of the children that put them next to the fireplace.

This is where one of the other legends on Black Piet comes in, Black Piet not really being black but just a trusty servant that gets very black because of the soot in the the chimney

So from november 16th 2002 untill December 5th 2002 you will see children in every house in The Netherlands placing there shoe next to the fireplace, (or backdoor if there is no fireplace), every night they will put some water, some sugar or carrot for the horse next to it and sing a Sinterklaas-song.

Haha your dad is funny Linda!!!But it is a BIG lie and i don't know if i'll have children that i will tell them this lie too

Nov 18th, 2002, 06:59 PM
lol, well, I would tell this to my children definitely! It's just such a nice "party"! :) Some children (like my sis) are really mad when their parents tell them it's a lie, cos they taught them not to lie, and now they're doing it theirselves! hehe

'btw, yeah, my dad is funny sometimes, and Belgians celebrate Sinterklaas on december 6th, so it's not at the same day :)

Nov 18th, 2002, 07:03 PM
Considering Sinterklaas died on December 6th, it makes more sense to celebrate Sinterklaas on that day :p ;)

I'm not Tine, but I'll answer anyway :)

Until very recently I thought we were the only two countries but this year my German house mate told me they celebrate it in Germany as well. But I understood it is different there, e.g. they don't have 'zwarte piet' and apparently they only get sweets and chocolate, not toys like we do.
