Welcome to this experimental thread where we'll give tipping doubles a try for the first time in 2012. Further down are the rules which are very similar to those of tipping singles but still, go throught them:
TEAMS
You simply sign in for yourself and I'll try to regularly update the entry list so that you can see with whom you can team up. If you already have an agreement with some player for this event, you just both type with whom you're playing as you sign in. You can have a maximum of three different partners during one season.
HOW TO PLAY
Playing Tipping is very easy. I will post the schedule and then you just tip who you think will win. Both members of a team post, each for him/herself.
e.g If the schedule was...
Ivanovic/Li vs. V. Williams/Pironkova
Kvitova/Wozniacki vs. Barthel/Goerges
This is how you would tip...
Ivanovic/Li
Barthel/Goerges
It is only main draw doubles matches.
If there's 1 point played in a match then the match counts (walkover or a pre-match retirement doesn´t count).
Pick for each match should be posted before the scheduled start of that match.
For the final match you will also need to guess how many games will be played. This will work as a tiebreaker.
Do NOT edit your post. If you want to change your picks do it in a new post. Edited posts will make all your picks invalid.
HOW TO SOLVE TIES
1. Team where both players guessed the winner.
2. Team closer in games guessed by average.
3. Team with the player who posted quickest in the final.
4. Team with the higher score in the semifinals, quarterfinals...until the tie is resolved.
SCORING AND BONUS POINTS
First Round = 1 point per correct tip.
Every additional round = one point more than for the previous, per correct tip.
Cobined points of team members form a team score for the Race; individual points are used for a 52-week ranking.

I'd just like to remind those who are not teamed up yet, as well as others who will join the game, that in order for your team points to count, both members of a team need to confirm that they'll play together before the first match starts. So if you are not teamed up before the start of play on day 1, your picks will only count towards your individual 52-week doubles ranking but not for the team race.

Actually you don't have to. In the other thread where we discussed this idea of doubles I said I'll run the rankings, race, calendar etc., but won't be managing all of the events. Thanks anyway:)

Just a reminder - six players still don't have a confirmed team; those without a team will not be eligable for team points i.e. those points that can qualify you for SEC.
That is correct. Only teams qualify for YEC, while your own points are used for the continuous ranking.

I do understand your point...to a point. All of this that you mention is the reason why I opened this thread so early (about two weeks before the start of doubles play), I did it so that everyone can read the rules, find a partner and figure if (s)he wants to play in this format.
The reason for only allowing teams to qualify for YEC is because that's the case in real tennis as well. Players don't qualify based on their individual points, but based on how well their team played during the season.
Yes, players with steady partners are at an advantage here, but that's also the case in real tennis. Those who can team up with the same player for a good number of tournaments have a better chance of climbing the rankings.
Speaking of rankings, our individual rankings in doubles tipping are meant to only serve as an indicator who was making the greatest number of correct picks throughout the season. It would also come useful when you're about to team up with someone by showing you how good this player actually is.
So if you wish I will delete all your picks, but I think this is the best format for doubles. It depends a lot on the team, just like in real tennis, things happen that make you unavailable for a tournament, just like in real tennis, but I don't think that only teaming up with the same person over and over again will be enough to land the team a YEC spot. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
I'll keep your points for now in case you still change your mind, but I respect your decision whatever it might be.

I'm not 100% sure but I think that both semifinals will be played on Friday. There is no doubles play today. If you want, you can of course send your semifinal picks as early as you want, you can send both at once or wait to see tomorrow's OOP, just to be sure.
