Martina to Davenport after the coin toss, which Martina won
Do you want me to server first and you want to be broken?

It may not be the exact quote, but this is the essence of it.

Martina again, when the WS burst on the scene and took tennis by storm.
They only get attention because they are black.

Martina later said she quoted out of context and/or did not quite understand why the quote was causing uch an uproar, saying English was her 3rd language

Serena's formal education comments on Hingis
Jankovic's Ajde-fistpump after beating Ivanovic
Radwanska throwing shade at Azarenka lately
Hingis' comments on the Kournikova rivalry "I win all the matches"
Hingis also called one of her formal doubles partners old and slow. I think it was Novotna or someone
Serena calling Sharapova overrated

Davenport once said she was playing against a man when Mauresmo burst into scene and beat her at the Australian Open 99

No Lindsay said "I thought I was playing a guy" referring to how Mauresmo hit the ball, she said it came across wrong and she appologised she meant it as a compliment which I among other Amelie and tennis fans believed, Hingis' half-man comment was not accidental and was really mean spirited and nasty. My favourite one was from Melanie Molitor who said "Graf was too old to cope with the fast evolving game", ah commupence was served in France that year for all her arrogant behaviour by the woman who was "past it" but always let her racket do the talking.

I think it was around the time of Wimbledon 2010, when Hingis and Kournikova were back at SW19. She was asked on the prospect of women's tennis and she was saying who is good and promising and she ended with "Even Ivanovic".

Legend could fill this up on her own

Referring to Amélie Mauresmo's muscular build on the eve of their 1999 Australian Open final, Hingis told reporters, "She's half a man."

When asked in the late 1990s how she felt about the budding rivalry between herself and the then-up-and-coming Anna Kournikova, Hingis responded, "What rivalry? I win all the matches."

After the Williams sisters (Venus and Serena) had complained of discrimination against them, Hingis told Time magazine in 2001: "Being black only helps them. Many times they get sponsors because they are black. And they have had a lot of advantages because they can always say, 'It's racism.' They can always come back and say, 'Because we are this color, things happen.'"

At the peak of the Williams sisters' and Hingis' competitive and fierce rivalry, Hingis stated in a press conference during the 1999 US Open referring to the sisters' remarks, "They always have big mouths. They always talk a lot. It's happened before, so it's gonna happen again. I don't really worry about that."

On the long-dominant player, Steffi Graf, Hingis said, "Steffi has had some results in the past, but it's a faster, more athletic game now than when she played. She is old now. Her time has passed."

Responding in a 1999 press conference on why she terminated her doubles partnership with former Wimbledon champion Jana Novotná, Hingis remarked, "She's old and slow."

The WTA Tour came out with its gold and silver exempt lists for 2003. The "winners" were Anna Kournikova, Amanda Coetzer, Alexandra Stevenson and Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, who all made the list despite being ranked outside the top 20. This didn't sit well with Patty Schnyder, currently No. 18, who responded in an e-mail to tour officials: "Very funny. Perhaps in the next year Michael Jackson [can get] a gold exempt and Donald Duck a special silver exempt."

Indeed. In November 2000 they played an exhibition match in Santiago, Chile, which featured an on-court strop, followed by a locker-room bust-up over a disputed line call. Hingis had asked Kournikova to intervene regarding the decision but the Russian is reported to have concurred with the line judge. At the next changeover Hingis, then the women's No1, hissed: "Do you think you are the queen? Because I am the real queen."
Cut to the locker room later and a screaming match that involved vases, flowers and trophies being flung. "It was so bad I thought they were going to beat each other up," said a frightened Jaime Fillol, the former Chilean player, who organised the event.

Not a player's quote, but I remember this from the BBC Sport's commentary giving me hysterics back in 2009 (the day after the then-#1 Safina crashed out of the US Open in the third round):

1558: Afternoon all, what awaits after the Russian equivalent of the Night of the Long Knives? So Dinara Safina, after insisting she would rather be remembered as world number one rather than a Grand Slam winner, can now concentrate on printing numerous copies of the WTA rankings pages until her heart's content. For American-reared compatriot Maria Sharapova, it's time to hit the practice court and work on the horlicks that is her service game. It's fourth round matches today and first up on Arthur Ashe we have defending women's champion Serena Williams against Daniela Hantuchova, while Juan Carlos Ferrero takes on France's Gilles Simon on Louis Armstrong.

Actually its obvious that she is passive-aggressively putting Henin down in those two quotes. Especially the 2nd one. She is insinuating that if she was playing better that Henin would have no shot against her. In reality Henin was just the better player in 2007.

From what I can gather she is insinuating that Stosur is is notorious for framing shots... which basically is saying she has poor hand-eye coordination. If you notice though, when Serena somewhat fears another player... she bad mouths them. So as a player... if you get under Serena's skin, you know you are doing something right. Most times she could care less.... when she gets angry it proves that she is irritated over the situation.

The funny thing about the Hantuchova quote is that it came from Chakvetadze. Seriously, that is just more than embarassing. As if Chakvetadze with her shitload of MMs in 2007 could outdo Danis achievements. She was so lucky then getting to the Semis, beating Serena by retirement, slumping JJ even though being bagelled in the second set and getting trashed by Justine.

I agree for the most part about Hingis. But the thing about Martina's comments, which you probably had to live through from the early times to appreciate, was that they all were said with smiles and a sense of humor. OMG anyone remembers Hingis' catfight with Kournikova in 2000 Santiago:hearts:?? Here's the story, I'm pretty sure everyone would have LOVED to have this scene on Youtube:lol:

Her only true friend on the tour was Venus, who promptly nicknamed Alexandra the Big Baby. "Well, she's an only child," Venus explained. "And she's kind of spoiled." But the truth is, Venus knew how Alexandra felt. She and Serena had been similarly ostracized when they joined the tour - players even left dirty underwear in front of their lockers.

That's why Venus and Alexandra began giving unflattering nicknames to a lot of the tour players. "Like, we call Martina Hingis 'Little Martin,'" Alexandra says. "Because she's like a little Martin who walks around gawking. She's a dork. She's a nerd. She tries to be cool." :o

At the '98 U.S. Open, Alexandra says, Davenport crossed Stevenson's name off the list for massages and replaced it with her own, saying, "Get this [bleeping] junior out of here." She then kicked Alexandra's bag, at which point Venus told Alexandra, "Just let me know; I'll beat her up for you." :boxing: Davenport won't comment on the incident.

Oldies from Wimbledon 1984 where just about everybody was bitching:

Hana Mandlikova being asked about super-fit Martina Navratilova:

"Sometimes, she scares you. She comes into the net with those big muscles. She's very very big and hard to pass. People should be asking doctors how she got that way"

Martina responds:

"Now I am winning they are complaining about my muscles and big legs. It's time for them to start working and lift their game. I just work at it and they don't."

"I've tried to help (Hana) but somewhere along the line she got really bitter with everybody, not just me. She just doesn't seem to like anybody."

"She mocked me at the French Open and yesterday apparently. I didn't see it but after I put away a ball and hit it hard, she's going like this (flexes a muscle). Poor little Hana - she's taller and bigger than I am"

Chris Evert has her say after beating Mandlikova in the semi:

"All this week I've heard a lot of quotes from Pam and Hana and Jordan. Last night someone was reading a big article. There were quotes from all three of those girls. I couldn't believe I was listening to it. I was amused because it was coming from one girl that has never beaten me in her life and another girl, Hana, who hasn't beaten me in three years, and Kathy Jordan who is ranked six in the world."

John McEnroe being asked how he would do in a match against Navratilova:

"That's an embarrassing question. I wouldn't waste my time thinking about playing her"

Well, a young Nadal, who was playing juniors at Wimbledon, walked down to my practice court that year, which was in the back, and he pressed his face against the gate, watching me hit. It was in the day when I worried about who was around my court because of all the press and the father issues, so I asked my mom to go see who was at the gate. She did. She said to the young boy at the gate, "You are Nadal, the player who is supposed to be a great champion one day." I kid you not. She said that. She invited him in. He said, in broken English, "No, no, I watch her. Semifinals at Wimbledon." And he smiled. It seems he wanted to see the girl who had made history.

:spit:

I strongly dislike Martina Hingis on so many levels but i cannot help but find her bitchiness funny. Just how brash and full of it she was from 17-22 was a joy to behold, and good for the game. Better Rivalries.

Too many bitter stans take them seriously. Hingis was regarded as the most friendly #1 EVER by most of her peers. Even her and Serena warmed up to each other.

The only player that truly hated Hingis was Venus. You could see it in her face; angry and about to cry when she lost, or doing some ridiculous celebration if she won. Never apologized for net-cords, made bitter comments to the press, etc. Other than Venus, Graf & Mauresmo disliked Hingis but they both eventually let it go (unlike their fans).

More than two years old, but never posted here before AFAIK.

During our match at RG, I was upset at what Rezai did: complain to the umpire about my grunting. She did it not because I was hindering her, but because she wanted me to lose focus. That was the real reason. I was playing well, but when I had to talk to the umpire I lost focus and my game was completely derailed. That was her tactic. She had done it before in Miami. This was the second time I played against her. I hate her, actually I do. I can't even look at her.

[...]

The next time I play against her I'll do my utmost to beat her! Losing to her twice is enough!

This is going back a bit but back in 1997 Sanchez Vicario showed her claws live on the BBC. I believe Sanchez and Novotna were doubles partners but fell out for some reason. They played in the Wimbledon semifinal and I remember during the net exchanges they seemed to aiming shots at eachother. They had a paltry handshake at the end where they hardly looked at eachother. Then in the interview afterwards Sanchez Vicario was asked about Novotna's chances in the final, her exact answer was "she CHOKED in the 1993 final against Graf, let's see if she CHOKES again." Snachez Vicario was literally spitting the word choke out of her mouth  I wonder if anyone else remembers this.
I think Arantxa's tendency to question alot of calls really annoyed Jana during a singles match they played and she said as much during a post-match interview. I think she ended up going a bit too far denigrating ASV's game for being too defensive. The doubles partnership fell apart straight after.

ASV then gave as good as she got with the 'choke' line.

“I’m friends with Jamie (Hampton), Christina (McHale), and Melanie (Oudin)- well, we don’t see Melanie as much anymore,”

:haha: I don't care if it was meant to be bitchy or not, that's just how it looks in print .

There are a lot of comments between the French players. My favorites:

After Bartoli refused to play Fed Cup, Golovin said even though she was born in Russia, she felt "more French" than Bartoli to which Bsrtoli responded:
"She says she's more French than me, but I'm not sure she understands 25% of my level in language and grammar...She has no education."

Also Serena's comment about Hingis's lack of a formal education. :hysteric: Also, "I'm not Justine." :worship:

That was so funny considering Serena is certainly not the smartest nail in the workshop.

That's not even a proper metaphor.....how can a nail be "smart" ?

Not the sharpest knife in the draw would of been appropriate haha

(Appropriate as in making sense, Not towards Serena)

And this is funny to the rest of us considering you of all people are questioning other people's intelligence. Your "metaphor" is proof enough.

Bartoli's always bragging how smart she is it seems.

I always laughed at the reliable witness that overheard Bepa being comforted by her coach after a first round loss to a not to be named player around the back at Sydney years ago,and she sobbed "I hate losing to that fucking bitch!"

When S.Williams made much the same comment about Hingis, was she also "bragging about how smart she is"?

After being beaten in Wimbledon SF, barely got revenge in USO Semi and later winning USO doubles title with Novotna, Hingis planned to dump her for Kournikova.

Asked why, Hingis just said "She's old and slow" nonchalantly.

Imagine now what would happen if it's Serena who is treated like that by a 17 years old snot.

I'm uninterested in such quotes. But one comment firmly planted in my mind:

"If I could, I'd take this ball and shove it down your f*****g throat"

I often wondered, how could a great champion utter such offensive line on a live Tennis court :tape:

Such a comment reminds me of two nasty sledging Cricket incidents:

Marsh (Oz) vs Botham (Brit)

In an Ashes match, Marsh said to Botham: "So how’s your wife and my kids?"
Botham responded: "The wife’s fine. The kids are retarded !"

McGrath (Oz) vs Sarwan (West Indies)

McGrath started: "So what does Brian Lara’s di*k taste like?"
Sarwan replied: "I don’t know. Ask your wife!"

McGrath gone mental: "If you ever F**king mention my wife again, I’ll f*****g rip your f*****g throat out." :tape:

In Tennis, do they often hurl comments or taunt each other in locker rooms or sledge on court
