View Full Version : The least clutch top player?

Of the top 20 players whom would you never even bet a thought in when crunch time appears. Things could be going smoothly, playing great but you just know when the finish is near, it won't be pretty.....

I gotta say poor Ana!! It really is a shame but that girl has seriously become one of the WORST closers of all time, i rarely feel that way about a player but lately it seems whenever the finish line(or even a set lead) appears, you just know she is gonna get tight. I just never feel safe watching a match of hers, no matter the event or opponent. Just looking at her season last year, she has had about 8/9 losses where she faltered when time to close or she had a major choke...even routine matchs like Sloane last yr 3rd USO and Vania AO 3rd this year, she tried to choke and you just saw how patheticly she was able to close it out. And whats worse is often times she will be having a perfectly routine win, totally in control and playing well, and literally one or two tights games and the match has flipped(Makarova at AO,Larsson at RG,Wickmayer in Rome,Mattek Sands in Madrid.

Lisicki is also pretty bad, poor girl gets way too tight for her own good and for that reason alone i could never imagine her WINNING a GS Final...I'm sure many will say Kuznetsova, but she usually plays poorly to begin with so a choke isn't out of the question.

Lisicki and Ivanovic are good choices.

To be an elite player, you have to have the killed instinct. Fake smiles will not win you matches.

I haven't watched her matches in a while but Kanepi used to be a dreadful choker, that Wimbledon match I still remember like yesterday.

Jankovic hasn't choked a ton except for when she played Henin.
Ana's a good call :sobbing:
There's nothing clutch about Wozniacki. She just bent over in all big matches, hoping for misses.

Ana's a great choker. Except when she plays Jelena.

But Caroline,to her credit, can get gritty and is quite and underrated fighter....Ana isn't gritty and doesn't put up much resistance unless literally gifted to her.

05-08 Ivanovic was one of the mentally toughest players, she would be able to save match points and comeback from huge leads.

Today, nothing but a choker and mental midget. It´s amazing to see how a player can change for the bad so much, disgusting to see.

NaNa used to be clutch but now she is wasting MP in half the matches she plays :oh:

Serena has to be in the mix right now too (late 2011 - early 2012), which is crazy considering her usual clutchness.

Kuznetsova takes this fairly easily.

Ana is up there nowadays too. She used to be one of the best closers on the tour - until late 2008 she had never lost a match after being up match point, and had never lost a third set tiebreak. And until 2009 I don't think she's ever lost after serving for the match. How things have changed.

Kuznetsova works like a smooth running engine then goes to fill up and instead of petrol puts in diesel and she just falls apart.
 :(

You didn't read the OP right? :) Serena even lost just 2 matches... Not being in a winning position in either one.

No, but she starts whining and gesturing when she loses a game or two against random top 100 players.
