I was thinking, Kuznetsova won two slams and played in 4 finals? But her best ranking was number 2 in 2008 if I remember correctly. I couldn't think of any other player who never got to number 1 in recent times despite a decent record. Just wonder how many players fall into this category? Mauresmo won two slams but she was number 1 twice in 2004 and 2006, in fact, Mauresmo got to number 1 without winning a slam initially.

Any other players in the last 30 years?

Pierce won 2 majors and made another 4 finals but didn't get to the #1 ranking

Mandlikova even had a following series at one point:

US Open - runner up
Australian Open - win
French Open - win
Wimbledon - runner up

and was ranked 5th

That is insane - that's a streak that many recent #1 players could only wish for.

Venus was number one for so little you could count her in too. :tape:

forgot about Mary Pierce.

That was some record by Mandlikova! But I suppose Navratilova was in her way?

Virginia Wade? Billie Jean got to number 2 I think.

Virginia Wade?

Interesting call! I believe she won the US Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon, but I never heard of her achieving number 1 status, I stand to be corrected though.

That just shows how little the slams were actually worth in the 1980s where tourney whores like Navratilova would always remain number 1 pure by playing over 100 matches in a season.

Venus was number 1 for about as many weeks as the number of slams she has

USO 80 runner-up, AO 80 (back then it was in November) winner, FO 81 winner and Wimbledon 81 runner-up.

Yet, at USO 1981 (http://www.wtatennis.com/SEWTATour-Archive/Archive/Draws/1981/905.pdf)she was only 5th seed.

Evert, Jaeger, Austin and Navratilova.

That stat was from before 1981. There is a bug on the WTA site.
