The drama of this match is incomparable: The late night, the crowd, the grunting, the comeback of an underdog, the fight of a champion and the final ankle turn that left us all to tears :sobbing:

This match has to be the most epic match from the past 10 years. (bar lin vs vee wimby)

TF is getting it's very own generation suck. Posters who have watched youtube match highlights over watching actual matches.

Ummm first of all, Henin vs. Capriati US Open 2003 was the best match of the last decade. Second, you are as delusional as your fave :tape:

Not the most epic, but certainly a lot more absorbing than any matches we get, especially outside of Slams, these days.

Then you would know this is not the most epic match in history, not even close. Even more so because it ends in a retirement. So buckle in, you're going to be ridiculed by many in this thread. :)

what I remember from this match was that while Tatiana was in pain Maria S was checking her strings at the back of the court. the match had drama, but wasn't epic.

in the past ten years, then I would say the 2002 AO final or 2003 USO SF.

PS. how come you said in the past ten years in the OP but put 'in history' in the thread title?

Tons of noise really. Golovin playing one of the better matches of her career and then suffering one of her worst injuries in her career. Cruel irony.

I don't know how this qualifies as some kind of GOAT match, but it's fabulous to see how enthralled and committed the crowd was. That kind of theatre is pretty much extinct on the WTA these days, and the crowds are almost always comatose.

What I remember from this match was the fall-out on TF. Serious meltdown, I think every thread on the main page was bashing Sharapova :o Can't remember such a circus outside of the Slam results.

u could have asked a simple question with 'what would be the most epic match in history' instead of picking up a match that you think is dramatic is the best

the last epic, drama filled, crowd wooping, TF melt down match was clijsters vs henin brisbane final and serena vs henin oz open final.

the WWW threads for those 2 matches were longer than 99% of the results threads of matches.

Most epic match?

Seles d. Sabatini
6–4, 5–7, 3–6, 6–4, 6–2
1990 Virginia Slims Championships

"I was getting hungry," Seles said. "I didn't have my lunch."

But for all the wrong reasons. Neither was that epic...both were actually letdowns.

As for epic? Kuznetsova-Schiavone was the last great epic match we've had

This is turning in to "best match ever."

The most epic match I've ever seen was the 2004 Carlsbad match between Myskina and Zvonareva. Myskina won it 17-15 in the final tiebreaker, saving 9 match points. Unbelievable quality match, and terrific all-court play from both.

That choke was so colossal. Some of her misses were hilarious. I'm glad she managed to finally do it in '98 though :awww:

Yep. One of those well-deserved and long overdue slams. The kind I hoped Dementieva and Safina would have gotten.

She had her chances in '97 vs. Hingis too, but at least she went down fighting there.

And I still have hope in Safina :awww:

I don't know, I would say, even if it was an epic or great match, it would have recieved a very small audience simply because it is Miami and is at night. Was it an early rd encounter? I remember highlights at the time on Eurosport.

For me an epic has to reach a worldwide audience and people talk about it for years afterwards, even casual sports fans. Over the last 10 years I would think of:

2001 French Open final between Capriati and Clijsters
2002 Aussie final between Capriati and Hingis
2003 US Open semi between Henin and Capriati
2004 Wimbledon semi between Serena and Mauresmo
2004 US Open semi between Capriati and Dementieva
2005 Wimbledon final between Venus and Davenport
2009 Wimbledon semi between Serena and Dementieva
2011 Aussie 4th rd match between Kuznetsova and Schiavone

And in the 1990s:

1991 US Open semi between Seles and Sabatini
1991 Wimbledon final between Graf and Sabatini
1993 Wimbledon final between Graf and Novotna
1995 Wimbledon final between Graf and Sanchez Vicario
1996 French Open final between Graf and Sanchez Vicario

Matches outside of slams which must get a worthy mention:

1990 WTA final between Seles and Sabatini (1st womens final in history which went to 5 sets?)
2000 WTA final between Hingis and Seles
2005 WTA final between Mauresmo and Pierce
2006 WTA semifinal between Mauresmo and Clijsters
2007 WTA final between Henin and Sharapova ( I was at this match)

There are lots of other matches that escape me at the moment, but these sorts of matches with a wide audience I would refer to as epics.

To me, the most epic women's match has to be the 1992 French Open final. Monica beat Steffi 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. The Wimbledon final in '05 with Venus and Lindsay was the first one since that one to provide the same kind of high quality play and drama. Capriati/Hingis in '02 isn't necessarily "epic;" the second set is where Jen fought off those match points, but the match didn't end with a flourish.

Probably the 2005 Wimbledon match. Not because of the drama but because how meaningful it was, not to mention the quality of the tennis was out of this world. That one still takes the cake for me.
