i don't know why she keeps entering tournaments? she is going to get a wildcard where ever she decides to play and they are not given out weeks in advance, so when she feels she is finally ready to compete just request a wildcard that week and play and until stop entering tournaments 6 weeks in advance she cant know she will be fit for.

Ok jokes aside, this was obviously never in doubt. It is just the nature of the WS to pull out of tournaments which they have signed up for. This has happened countless of times and lately it's just been happening too often, which is just not funny anymore. I already predicted at the start of the year that Venus will not even play a match this year and my words are proving to be right yet again :o

Bummer. I really would like to see her have a good run somewhere, but I'm less and less optimistic.

But then this board would drag her to the pits for stealing a WC that could have gone to a local. 6 weeks ago she thought that she could be ready for this, so she did the right thing by entering on her own ranking. Everyone knows not to get their hopes up anyway, especially since Venus herself keeps saying that she's taking everything on a day-to-day basis.

It would be worse if these withdrawals were coming after direct statements that she'd be playing, but the fact that 90% of this board probably didn't even know that she was entered in Malaysia shows that Venus isn't misleading anyone.

come on, no one is going to care if venus gets a wildcard to regular tournaments. she is going to need one now whatever tournament she enters anyway.

I have a feeling Venus will make a farewell appearance at Wimbledon.

It was the same with Monica. She got injured, said she was getting treatment and wanted to come back, and never did. At least I think Venus will make one more appearance.

 for Venus fans.

When will this woman retire? She had been entering tournaments only to pull out days before? Why wont she just take a season off then think about her career before even thinking of entering events. :o

Her and Serena are coming back in Miami. Jesus Christ people common-sense.
Why go all the way to MALAYSIA for one tournament against a very very weak field when she can take a few more weeks of hard practice and come back in Miami?

Tripp
Feb 23rd, 2012, 04:45 AM
Damn it, will she ever play a match again? :sobbing: She's the kind of player that deserves to retire on her own terms. I'm sure all she hopes for is to be able to compete at the Olympics and give it a try with Serena at a doubles medal.

The ITF will create a scandal if Venus gets a WC with just 2-4 events played and a ranking outside the top56 as required for the Olympics. The WC are thought for countries who cannot send girls or are underrepresented.

On the other hand, Paola Suarez must get a wildcard too.

Not at all surprised - this tournament never seemed a sensible option for someone suffering from a fatigue-inducing syndrome. Venus will have enough problems lasting in tournaments anyway without giving herself jetlag into the bargain. It would be much wiser to keep her schedule centred on North America and Europe where the travelling will not be so exhausting. Of course, the main problem now is that there are very few hard court events left before the clay season starts and clay will have its own problems for her - long matches on that surface won't be ideal either.

Let's see what happens in the next couple of months. So far in recent months Venus has only managed exhibitions and Fed Cup, where she has only had to play one match in an event - how she will cope with playing several rounds in a week is still questionable. If she does not show for Miami and Charleston, then fears of a disappearance a la Capriati/Seles will surely mount. So I wouldn't put your hopes up until she actually turns up and plays and proves she can last more than 1-2 rounds in an event.

I kind of agree with this. I do think Venus see's Miami as a definite return point obviously unless she has a really bad week just before or something, it makes sense as her home town event etc but i think Malaysia could have been a great way to shake off rust and gain confidence and beat up on some scrubs.

I'm pretty meh about it, if we don't see her in Miami then i'll start to accept the people who are saying she's done, but not ready to believe it just yet!

How would she get into the Olympics? Aren't the entries based off ranking?

Venus would get a WC to anywhere.
She need not play anymore before the Olympics and still get in.

For the singles competitions, the top 56 in the world rankings on 11 June 2012 of the WTA and ATP tours will qualify for the Olympics. However, entry is limited to four players from a country, which means that players who qualify from countries with four higher-ranked players already participating will not participate, and players outside of the top 56 from countries with less than four players already participating will qualify. Also a player is only eligible to compete if he/she is in good relationship with their National Association and the ITF, and have made themselves available to be drafted to represent their country in Davis Cup or Fed Cup for two of the following years - 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 - with the provision that he/she must participate either in 2011 or 2012. [5]Of the other eight wildcard slots, six of the slots will be determined by the ITF's Olympic Committee, taking into account ranking and spread of nations represented, while the final two slots will be awarded by the IOC to players from small nations. In the doubles competitions, twenty four teams will automatically qualify as per the rankings on 11 June 2012, subject to a maximum of two teams per nation. Players in the top ten of the doubles rankings can reserve a place, provided they have a partner to compete with. The remaining eight teams will be decided by the ITF's Olympic Committee. Entries for the mixed doubles will be confirmed at the Games.[6]

Again how would Venus qualify for the Olympics? It is not like I don't want to see her there but that is not a regualar tournament with gold wildcards.
