Really good match from kirilenko, Niculescu was very bad today maybe shes tired or maybe she was just outplayed today but Kirilenko hit some really good drive volleys and some nice drop shots too. It was 11 games in a row as well

Anabel Croft said at 4-0 2nd set niculescu looked exsasperated and desperate and for once I agree with her because niculescu did not really know what to do sadly. But shes at a career high and had a good week last week. Niculescu did not volley well today either and its a big part of her game, I have feeling she might be a little injured as well kept holding her shoulder at the end. Too many slices but funnily when she hit through the backhand she hit some nice winners.

I like the tulips at the side of the court makes me feel like spring and summer are coming :D

Monica was on cruise control up 3-1* in the 1st and then there was a injury time-out for Kiri and Monica wasn't the same :awww:

Really nice match by Maria. Won 11 games in a row and won 3 and 0 just like 5 years ago. Really enjoyed watching her play.

Horrendous display. Maybe she was tired, maybe the wind once again f*cked up her game, but I don't want to look for excuses, she was clearly outplayed by Kirilenko today who exactly knew what to do in those windy conditions for example by using a lot of spin.

However, I can't be happy with Monica's attitude out there. Yes, her game was bothered by the wind as well, but she didn't win a single game after that damn wind break in the first set. It looked as if she was simply pissed and the rest of her confidence which was still there at the beginning of the match breezed away in the air like the umbrella over the umpire's chair. Her serve went to straight awful, she lost focus and patience, too many errors, everything can be related to the wind, but I guess the poor mentality played a role there.

What happened to Kirilenko's grunt? I thought players were unable to stop doing this

Worst I've seen Monica play in a long long time. I actually don't think she played that badly against Chakvetadze or Zheng, she didn't play that well but she wasn't terrible either. Today, Monica was terrible. I suppose one could say she struggled with the wind but more than that it did just seem like she gave up and stop fighting, which was pretty disappointing. Not an admirable performance at all and one I very much want to forget. Hopefully Monica can forget it too and her next match will be more like what she showed the previous two weeks.

To Maria's credit, after the first four games, she was very solid, moved very quickly and played with good discipline. She also played well at the net, which Monica definately did not. Her 2nd set bagel over Monica was very deserved.

Kirilenko played very well. Haven't seen her play that often and most of the times i do see her she gets hammered. Apparently she's better than i thought she was.

Kiri is a talented tennis player (even if lots of people here don't think so...), but she is not enough strong and can't really compete with overpowered player who often blow her of the court. Because of her fragile body, she also suffer from numerous little injuries which slow her when she's in a good run

Maria has been in the top30 since almost 2005 (she struggled in 2009 because of her knee...), we should praise her for this consistency :worship:

Brainless match by Junkulescu.

Whenever people praise Junkulescu for her "versatility" (and yes, some people do just that), they should be shown a tape of this match: Kirilenko, for all the flaws that make her the laughingstock of the commentariat here and elsewhere, actually knows when and how to use her shot variety to try to win points; Junkulescu just mindlessly throws some junk around at random to disrupt her opponents' rhythm.

2007 Dubai: Kirilenko d. Niculescu 6-3 6-0
2012 Dubai: Kirilenko d. Niculescu 6-3 6-0

Weren't these two matches also the first two televised matches of the first Monday of each tournament?

Funny how you never turn up in a thread when Monica plays a good match but you are always there when she loses. :wavey:

Today, yes, but definitely not for the majority of the past year

Exactly. If today's match was representative of how Monica has played in the last year she wouldn't be top 30. Heck, she wouldn't even be top 130.

A whopping 80 points?

I was mistaking, I thought she won 2 matches instead of only 1 (vs Chakvetadze) :help:

By the way 80 points is about the difference between 22th and 27th now, so it can make the difference in a slam draw for example (25-32 draw 1-8 in R3, 17-24 draw 8-16 if I'm right). Each point is important for Maria ;)
