Siri Cornetsson aiming for top 10 again

Can Siri Cornetsson raise her level again in Doha?

We met Siri Cornetsson for an interview at the Qatar Ladies Open in Doha.

Q: How do you explain your once again early exit at the Australian Open?
Siri: I feel alot of pressure at the Grand Slams you know and often lack self confidence at these major events. Australian Open is particularly bad where I have only won one singles match in the past 4 seasons, ironically against multiple Australian Open champion Elise Mésane. Wimbledon is just as bad where I haven't won a singles match since my final in 2008! US Open is the only good Grand Slam in singles of the past seasons for me. If you can't bring it at the Grand Slams it's becoming very difficult to stay inside top 10.

Q: What do you think you need to improve in order to get back to top 10?
Siri: I am simply far too inconsistent these past months. After winning the B Championships I looked like I was on the right track again and then can't confirm these performances at the start of 2012. I will work hard to get consistent results again and get back to top 10. Fortunately I have almost nothing to defend during the next couple of weeks. You know, during this time last season I was losing in every possible tiebreak.

Q: What about doubles?
Siri: Harper and myself handled the pressure rather well at the Australian Open and could at least conserve our position as second best doubles team. It's about bloody time we win a doubles title again though. I can't even remember the last doubles title we won, too many finals lost in the meantime.

Q: In Fed Cup Sweden showed again an amazing fighting spirit. However there were also controversies with Botswanian team after the encounter. What can you say about that?
Siri: They can't get over the fact that we were the better team and have to be sour losers. I guess it's jealousy of our good team spirit.

Miranda Frost dreams of becoming a senior one day

Elegance: Miranda Frost in the new photoshoot "Winter fairytale"

Despite only being 16 years old Miranda Frost is quickly turning into a glamour star. The teenager who is interested in fashion and design has been described as the best dressed junior player by the medias. The green eyed girl with the curly blonde hair has been entitled "Fairy Miranda" by Svenska Sportsblad in one of there December editions. Recently she made a photoshooting which was entitled "A winter fairytale" and shot in studios in Malmö.

"It was great fun doing that photo shooting and it was also a good distraction from the every day tennis business. I am aware of how hard the model business can be and that's why I will just stay a part time model with a photoshoot from time to time. I am very interested in fashion and design too and it's one of my dreams to study it on a University."

Miranda Frost is following her high school courses in correspondance and is a very ambitious student.

"I know that it is very important to have a good education. My mother is a former figure skater and she chose to break up with school at the age of 16. When her career ended because of a stress fracture she didn't have a graduation. I don't want to be in the same situation one day."

Miranda Frost has developped into one the most promising juniors behind Xhaka Saikikimbondwe and Zaelly Ircha. She is currently ranked number 3 and has reached her 10th singles final last week in Monastir. However her mental toughness in these finals is far from good as she has only won 3 of them. She scored her biggest success by winning the Junior Championships last December.

"I definitely had the chances to win more titles, that's true. I am very consistent in making finals but then don't have the needed luck on my side. My coach still has to work on my stamina in these crucial matches. The Junior Championships were a big step forward for me and it helped me getting new sponsors."

The Swedish junior is also known for critizing the tough schedule: "The road map is really insane. You are supposed to play week in week out and often the big junior events are placed rather badly. I am injury prone and don't want to risk a major injury. That's why I need a break from time to time."

Miranda Frost's biggest weapon is her first serve which also gave senior players some trouble as recently to Cornelia Du Preez at the Australian Open where she didn't face any break points in her two tiebreak loss. At the doubles competition she and Xhaka caused the upset of the strong Fellivitch/Mesane and were 2 tiny points away from making the doubles quarterfinals.
"That was some amazing showdown from both of us. It's really unfortunate that we couldn't score the second win. I really hope that the offer from Xhaka of becoming a permanent doubles team on the juniors tour still stands."

In Doha Miranda Frost is using one of her six senior exempts to breath again a bit of the senior air. She seems to take these senior events really seriously and it does look like she wants to start on the senior tour one day.
"I don't need to hide the fact that I got some serious offers to play as a senior tour in one or two years. However for that to happen Siri needs to retire from the tour and only two weeks ago at the Fed Cup she revealed to me that she won't retire until she has won a singles Grand Slam and completed the doubles Grand Slam with partner Harper. I am respecting her decision but of course I can't await the day when I finally can compete on the senior tour."

Miranda Frost was one of the eye witnesses of the recent Fed Cup drama as she was sitting on the bank as an alternate when things started to heaten up. Asked about her point of view she responded: "I saw Ruflina and Nthamangela refusing to give handshakes to Siri and Mia after the doubles loss and then they got really loud so that the umpire was coming down to avoid a melee. The crowd was booing us off court too. You know as a young player you get a bit scared in these tense situations. I feel a bit uncomfortable by the thought of having to play against Ruflina in doubles first round here in Doha."

Fleri: " I might be the oldest player on tour, but I feel better and stronger than before! "

Last year I have conquered a huge hurdle on my life, had an open heart surgery to replace the aortic root and valve, the surgery took more than 9 hours, my family and closest friends were there until I woke up the next day. Unfortunately a few days later, I have to go back into the opearting theatre to clear some of the fluid (blood) around my heart, the 2nd surgery took more than 3 hours.

It was the most scariest and depressing moment of my life, I didn't know what to expect when I came out from the operating theatre, with plenty of love and care from the love ones, I have managed to overcome the difficult/dark time of my life.

My career in tennis was not that good last year, although I have committed to play a week before the surgery, my mind wasn't there at all, but I have promised to myself that I have to get better and stronger, I love tennis!

The recovery process wasn't that easy either, I have to in and out the hospital/seeing the cardiologist and the surgeons, regular blood test also perform to make sure the thickness/thinner of my blood as I have to take warfarin for the rest of my life.

At the end of 2011, I have started a gentle practise and training, it was the nicest moments of my life to be able holding the tennis racket after nearly 6 months off the court. Day by day, I am getting stronger and stronger, better and better.

At the start of 2012, I have committed to go back on tour and play at Brisbane, didn't expect to go further, but I was able to reached the semifinal, then head down to Sydney for the following week, unfortunately lost in the early round. My determination and self believe brings me to practise and train even harder, and it's paid off when finally I was able to win my first GS Singles title at the age of 34 years old, also holding the RU throphy in the Mixed doubles with Rovel, and also reached QF in doubles with my long time partner, lovely Kathleen.

2012 will be the year for me to show the world that I am the player to watch!

Fist pump of Nemayeva after winning another match

Doha, QAT - The young Russian Anastasia Nemayeva seems to have found good tennis and reached to the third round of the WTA Doha, defeating #15 seed Giuseppina Benedetti 6-3 7-5. The next opponent is the American and eighth seed Jennifer Casanova. Nemayeva answered few questions after the match today.

You haven't won two consecutive matches in a tournament a long time. How do you feel?
"It's really too good. I'm changing aspects of my game and feel that it's working. I'm more aggressive today and collecting good things."

Outlook for the next round?
"I don't have nothing to lose. I want to win and I know that I'm able." :boxing:

You recently broke the partnership with Vittoria Perez. Disagreements or wear?
"In fact I even participated in the decision. I was simply betrayed. Really do not like this subject, but it was better that way, I need a partner who cares about playing tennis. I wish good things to Vittoria, anyway."

Are you looking for a new partner for doubles, right?
"Yes, I combined with Cristina for two events. She's a great player and a nice girl. I think we can be successful."

You recently participated in the Fed Cup, playing with Elena Skankhova. Good experiences?
"It was a great experience, I love the Fed Cup and represent my country. I had great fun with Elena, a shame she's retiring. We got the win and that was very important for Russia and for myself, obviously."

There were rumors that you would be thinking about quitting tennis?
"If all else fails, I can compete in the pole vault LOL." :oh:

Hellas Youngster upsets 3rd seed

Uproar in Doha where after number 1 seed Pamela Bowden, also number 3 seed Chantal Chan from Hong Kong. Our reporter spoke to executioner of the day Alexa Anastidis.

Hey Alexa, did you expect this result today?
Well I knew I'd have a chance against her. We played a very good match against each other in Moscow last year where Chantal ended up walking away with the victory. But I knew right away that chantal was the type of player I could win against. And I have been in rather good shape the entire year. After Australian Open (red. where she won the doubles title with Cornelia duPreez) I took a short break to get ready for the string of big tournaments that are upcoming now. Greece doesn't play Fed Cup so I had that entire week off and last week I took a week of vacation in Pattaya and started to hit the balls again. I knew I was ready.

But did you expect such a scoreline?
No not really, but I think chantal eventually simply gave up. She led me 0-3 and 2-4 in the first set tie-break, if someone of her standard then still looses that must be a big mental blow for her. She did still try in the beginning of the second set, but when I got the 2-0 break with a rather lucky netball, she gave up. Never expected to get a 6-0 on the board though.

Now you'll play Ukrainian Yelena Pirilenko. What are your expectations?
Hard to tell since I have never played her before in singles and don't really know her except by name.
I ll google her later or watch some clips on youtube to learn her playing style. Maybe my coach knows more about her, although I doubt it. I ll see how it goes , or as the Greek saying goes "It can thaw or it can freeze".
