New York: Spanish tennis player Regla Torres said in an interview today that she is considering taking up citizenship in another country after the Spanish Tennis Federation failed to support her in the latest Fed Cup tie.
"I'm disappointed," she said. "I was the team captain in the only year we won. I know it's been quite a few years but I guess things have changed. In my days as team captain, we picked players on their ability not on personal differences."
Torres was shockingly dropped from the team by captain Vittoria Perez despite being the second ranked singles player available for play and despite being the most experienced player on clay, the surface of the tie.
"I'm not someone who bears grudges. I'm also not someone who will pick players for personal reasons than for the team. And I think that's why it's best that I'm not on the same team with her (Perez). Because if the shoe is on the other foot, I will not sink that low," Torres said.
Despite a lacklustre first half to 2011, Torres is now only seven places behind Perez in FWTT rankings. "Oh I'm confident, I'll be ranked higher than her in no time, it's not that. It's about principles and where my heart is," she said.
She declined to comment on where her next move will be and also on the Fed Cup competition citing that personal reasons have kept her away from following the results.
