I couldn't think of another title because the next tournaments she is playing are scattered around the world!

But the goal is clearly set!

She will start in Pattaya, Thailand.

Main Draw:

(1)ZVONAREVA, Vera RUS vs Q
ROBSON, Laura GBR vs AMANMURADOVA, Akgul UZB
WC-LERTCHEEWAKARN, Noppawan THA vs DOI, Misaki JPN
(7)CIRSTEA, Sorana ROU vs SEMA, Erika JPN

She must reach the quarterfinal at least and then a duel against Vera?

Ah, a typo on my part. I don't think a retirement should count as a top 10 win. However it is a great opportunity for Sori. She has a good H2H with Kiri as well (2-0) so she will have a chance to advance.

Although admittedly they haven't played since 2010.

As for tmrw Samy wont make same mistake twice Sori was up her standarts at AO on big stage different circumstances Sammy under pressure a bit and she played poorly. A little harsh hey, Sorana's on-court attitude is beautiful that's the first thing, she doesn't/didn't get down on herself which helps her to stay focused and into the match (remember Hobart against Angelique  ).

I find she didn't play very strategical today and let Sam too many looks at her forehand contrary to Australian Open -- also her ROS was slightly lower but Sorana comes from so far that these kinds of losses now have much more of a positive aura around them than in the past.

She looks promising for her future tournaments and her ranking should show that as an effect. ;)

really happy for Sori even though she lost... we can see a big improvement since last 2 years she´s now able to compete the best players which means a lot and that hard work has paid off maybe it lasted much longer than we expected but Sori is finally back on her way to be top 30 I believe she can make it and be consistent on that top 30 level... hopefully she can reach this level and stay there because she´s older than in 2010 and much more experienced now and has learnt how to handle the pressure... so proud of her!

Monterrey R1: (3)Sorana Cîrstea def. Stefanie Voegele 6-3 2-6 7-5

The most nervwrecking sh*t I've seen for a long time and being a proven fan of headcases this has to mean something, but let's start off from the beginning.

Set 1:
Both players struggling on the return so either one held serve pretty easily, when Sorana was able to break for the first time, followed by an immediate rebreak, until she took her 2nd BP at 4-3 to break the Swiss for the second time and eventually serve it out with an ace. Also saved a couple of BPs in the run to consolidate her break lead.

Set 2:
Sorana got the early break, but was unable to hold serve for the rest of the set going from decent Top 50 level to club tennis in about 2 minutes, giving it kind of up in the end with the dumbest errrors for a while.

Set 3:
Sorana back to her 1st set level going up 3*-0 by a double break, saving a couple of BPs on the way, just to let it go back to 3-3. Then the comedy began. Sorana missing 2 BPs to go up a break again, so that Stefanie was able to hold with her 4th game in a row to 4-3. I thought it was over and nearly felt confirmed by following BPs on Sorana's serve after very sloppy errors, however she hit GOAT mode all of a sudden again hitting 2 crushing baseline winners and an ace to make it 4-4. She was able to maintain her confidence in the following return game hitting further winners, but benefitting from 2 Swiss DFs in the end, 1 on BP. At 5-4 30:30, she completely misstimed a return from Voegele which she already thought to be out, even going for the fistpump just to get broken with another terrible error to 5-5. I thought once again, too much fail, that's it and Steffi cruised to a fast 40-0 lead. But for another time, I underestimated random GOATrana coming up with a couple of beautiful strokes to make it from 40-0 to BP when Voegele dumped a forehand smash in front of the open court into the middle of the net. Heck, Sorana serving for the match again getting 2 MPs. But fitting the match, the 1st one got saved by a Voegele netcord, still Sorana was somehow able to take the match on the 2nd try releasing me from that mental torture.

Brilliant comedy, but messy match throughout. Sorana swinging between world class and utter crap within her regular 5 minute intervals. However, Voegele was probably the toughest opponent she has to face until the semis, so I hope this very ugly win can boost her confidence to make it another good tournament.

I saw only the third set and it was, well let's say interesting :p. Frankly it was the worst set I watched Sorana played this year (if I don't take in consideration the last two sets from Errani match when she was suffering). But I give her credit because she made o long trip from Doha to Monterrey and there are also 9 hours difference in time zone.

Good luck against Babos, Sorana!

The same can be said about Vinci and she lost in R2. They both were far away from their best, probably tired from the matches before and still irritated about the time shift. Sorana kept on stretching between points today, I haven't seen that from her for a long time.

I doubt her chances too, but she has already beaten players like Stosur and Zvonareva in 2012, hope she will surprise us :)

Well done against Iveta :)

She is always winning against Radwanska or gets completely trashed  Avoid bagels this time ;)

Yay Sorana, I predicted she'd win in 3

4-6 7-5 7-6(5)

Trailed 3-5 in the second, had to save BPs on her serve in nearly every service game in the decider apart from 5-5 and was even 2-4 down in the TB. When was the last time she displayed so much mental strength?

BP conversion 3rd set: 1/1 Sorana, 1/10 Iveta says it all!

And as someone already pointed out in the result thread, she would have lost that kind of a match with a blow out 1 year ago like it was the case in their previous meeting, but despite some minor chokes here and there she got her game back and obviously her mental capabilities as well. Well done! :cheer:

No chance against Radwanska, i only hope she doesn't get steamrolled.

I can't believe there was a Sori match with choking where Sori wasn't the one doing the choking :D

No way she would've won that match 6 months ago, which is another good sign for her.

Sorana can choke a lot, but she has already displayed some great fighting as well in the past, especially against the big guns nearly everyone in her position would have folded.

Jankovic at FO 2009, Radwanska and Wozniacki later that year in LA. You never know with her.

I remember her last match against Radwanska - 7-6(4) 1-6 7-5 a week after a 0-6 1-6 lost :) . It was the last big match made by Sorana before her foot injury. In the two tight sets she won she showed how to beat Radwanska - lot a patience waiting for the right moment to hit the decisive shot. In the other three sets she played the opposite - hit harder every ball she got making tons of UE's. Radwanska played the same during all sets :)

Curcubeu
Mar 7th, 2012, 11:47 PM
I'm remembering that as well. Like all Radwanska matches on HC it was live on ES, I believe, and it was so nervwrecking to watch, because it was all on Sorana's racket and you know that she will either hit a dumb error or a winner and if I can recall correctly the match was decided by the hawk-eye which overruled a Sorana winner that was given out.

grs
Mar 7th, 2012, 11:53 PM
Yes, you're right. It was a backhand down to line winner. Sorana must be more patient, waiting for the right moment to use her big weapons, reducing the number of UE's this way. I know she can do it! She showed that many times before.

guys, you said it all... Sori has to be very patient but it´s going to be pretty tough with her kind of an agressive game.... she can win the match but it has to be her very best day.... Aga plays every match with the same running from one to other side and making almost no UEs.... she won´t give Sori any ball for free so Sori will have to hit the ball pretty hard and fast and mainly in the court... Sori will have to be very consistent Aga can beat aggressive players very lightly because she doesn´t miss the ball....

 I watched the score-board from the corner of an eye but I'm really happy Sori qualified, I mean got through. Pity she has to play Radwanska but oh well it's playable so best of luck.

I would prefer her to get drawn into the 9-24 seeded range to be honest. Of course, the lowest seeds are probably easier to beat, well, looking how many Top 20 players are out of form not even that's the case, but a 25-32 seed is always followed by a Top seed in R3.

hellas719
Mar 12th, 2012, 04:32 AM
^With everything she's been through the last few years, just getting to R3 would be a huge achievement ;). And she could get an out of form one like Wozniacki or Bartoli :p

I'm keenly awaiting Sori's next big name victim in 2012 to add to Stosur and Zvonareva.

Heather Watson in R1, not too bad.

Vika looming in R3 so she's not very likely to go any further :(

Curcubeu
Mar 19th, 2012, 06:49 PM
Well, at least she drew a rather easy seed with Safarova in R2, hoping that the Czech doesn't have one of her four peak showings a year.

R1 should be no problem either, although Heather is the kind of player she hates to face, but girl has no weapons whatsoever and her form isn't that spectacular either.

Sorana even outdid my ATP faves today, as if this is possible.

4th choke of the year, 2nd major choke. You would wonder where the girl could be ranked, seriously and instead of taking the risk of getting banned for abusive insults, I'll stick with a simple

Lol

One step forward, two steps backwards...

It's only one match, so even though it was an awful way to finish the match against an opponent she ought to beat, at most it's one step backwards, in my opinion. Maybe less than one full step. I still consider her better play this year to be a sign of an upward trend. If she plays well in her next tournament all will be fine. She was really close to winning here, but just couldn't get over the line. A few small mental improvements at critical points in the match and she'll be closing that set 6-0 or 6-1. It's pretty difficult to make those small mental changes though. That's the art of matchplay.
