I just saw a talkshow on tv, and the subject was amazing to me. apparently the British detest us
According to a Belgian teaching in England the English (or British) press is very negative about everything that is Belgian. There was even a headline saying that Belgium is the centre of all evil, even more than Irak is.
Ofcourse you also have the famous joke: name 5 famous Belgians and then they don't know any and they LTAO.
When we do have something good they try to minimise it, like painters and architecture. Then it's original based in the Netherlands.
Oh and we should be lucky cause the British saved our ass over and over again in history. Like the two WW's.
This teacher made a book about this, trying to comprehense where this aversion comes from.

How do the British see this I wonder.

Never heard of that one  I quite like the Belgians for what it is worth

Never heard a bad thing said about Belgium

This is the first I've heard of it and I live there!!

Whatever talk show this is, is obviously very misleading.

In the North-East, Belgium and The Netherlands are really popular places.

Centre of all evil my arse.........

Well I don't think she's lying, the teacher that is.
The talk-show itself has nothing to do with it. Their several guest in it.
Do any Brits know Frank De Winne?

Italians - Slimy
Turks - Has to do with Turks stabbing Leeds fans
French - Smelly

I'dve said France & Spain seem to be the nations people aren't too keen on. Australia are as well yet the USA are definitely becoming challengers! ;)

I've never read a headline that says ANYthing like that, and I've lived in Britain for all my life.
The British press DOES however regard Belgium as a pretty 'boring' place.
We had an advert for a car (possibly a Renault or something similar), and the advert was:
'Belgium. The roads are straight, the rivers are straight.........even the corners are straight.'
Of course you also have the famous joke: name 5 famous Belgians and then they don't know any and they LTAO.
:D:D:D
Actually, that IS a very funny joke.
But in Liverpool, we have a slight variation:
'What's the shortest book in the world? The book of famous Belgians.'

Another one is:
'What's the shortest book in the world? The book of great Italian war heros.'
:D:D:D
Bloody funny if you ask me:D
But the feeling i get is alot of English dislike (These aren't neccesary my views)

Germans - maybe cos of the war?
Italians - Slimy
Turks - Has to do with Turks stabbing Leeds fans
French - Smelly
USA - 'We Rule, how dare anyone look down on us'
Aussies - Arrogant
I quite like Germany, and the Germans that I've met.
I don't like Italians however. A bunch of wusses, all of them:D
I also like Turkey, and want them to join the EU (I hate Leeds)
The USA? I don't like the country. Most of the people however, don't bother me 'too' much.
Aussies? Yes. They're arrogant. They have the cheek to call us 'POMs'

I don't know, but our english teacher always told us to say that we were Belgian and not French!! Because they prefer the Belgians!!!

BTW, there's a magazine which is called "the Bulletin" and it's only stories written by the English about the Belgians

TOP 10 REASONS FOR BEING BELGIAN

1 You get to speak three languages, but none of them intelligibly.
2 If other countries want to fight a war, they will do it in your country.
3 You can brew drinks out of fruit, and still call it beer.
4 You are either
a.like the Dutch, just less efficient
b.like the French, just less romantic
c.like the Germans
5 Decent fries. Real mayonnaise. Great chocolate. The best beer.
6 No one knows anything about you, except for the Dutch and French and they make fun of you.
7 More scandals in a week than any other country in a decade.
8 You can drive like a maniac on the road and nobody cares.
9 All your famous countrymen are either imaginary, or sex-offenders
10 Face it. It's not really a country, is it?

TOP 10 REASONS FOR BEING ENGLISH:

1. Two World Wars and One World Cup.
2. Warm beer.
3. You get to confuse everyone with the rules of cricket.
4. You get to accept defeat graciously in major sporting events.
5. Union jack underpants.
6. Water shortages guaranteed every single summer.
7. You can live in the past and imagine you are still a world power.
8. Bathing once a week - whether you need to or not.
9. Ditto changing underwear.

3 a. You can legally kill yourself.
b. You can legally be killed.
4 You're exactly like the Germans, except that nobody hates you.
5 You think you are a world power, but the rest if the world thinks Copenhagen is your capital.....
6 You get to insult people and defend yourself.
by saying it's a national tradition.
7 You can put your finger in a dyke and it will save your country.
8 You live in the most densely populated country in Europe, and still you've never seen your neighbours.
9 If the economy is bad, blame the Germans. If a war is started, blame the Germans. If you lose your keys, blame the Germans.
10 Bikes are public property. Locks are a challenge.

Nov 15th, 2002, 11:54 AM
Well, I'm Belgian and I am studying in the UK for a year, and up to now I haven't been mobbed or anything because I'm Belgian, so I guess it is slightly exaggerated that Brits hate us ;)
I actually even managed to make some friends, so they might even like us :)

DutchieGirl
Nov 15th, 2002, 12:17 PM
Lucky Fieke! You even made British friends! I didn't think British people knew how to make friends! ;) You must have taught them how! ;)

*Mind you my parents are British, so that was said tongue in cheek* (just before anyone gets mad at me).

Good thing you added that, because if there's one thing I haven't mastered yet, it's the British humor :)

I love Belgians! :D And Belgium! :D (England's not bad either... if you get past the fact that they speak English there). ;)

... and that's the problem: it is so hard to know whether a British person is being sarcastic or just being rude ;)

maybe that was the problem with the person on that Belgian talkshow: maybe he or she was just being sarcastic and Belgians thought that person was really offfending them or something
