During the first Grand Slam of 2012, Greek newspaper try to familiarize the Greek general public a bit more with the FWTT stars, by introducing the opponents of Alexandra Anastidis. There was a tough draw for Alexa this week, against FWTT legend Sabine Graf. A player who shouldn't even need an introduction since she is so well known.

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/namedImage/12781/player_70044.jpg

Nationality: German
Age: 36
Most significant past results Australian Open: 2 times runner-up in singles, 1 tournament victory in doubles
Other significant results: Wimbledon singles victory, and both Wimbledon and US Open double victories
Favorite saying: Gluck auf!
Favorite word: Strassenbahngleisreinigungsmachine
Alexas opinion: Sabine is just so experienced and still displays such an awesome physique presence on court, it's unbelievable. She still knows very well to pump herself up for the biggest tournaments she is currently focussing on. I beat her once, but that was when she wasn't 100% fit.

Newspaper predictions: Sabine Graf wins the match in 3 sets.

Booking odds: The bookmakers are even more pessimistic for our Greek starlet:
Alexa wins in 2 sets: 1 vs 23
Alexa wins in 3 sets: 1 vs 24
Sabine wins in 2 sets: 1 vs 1.23
Sabine wins in 3 sets: 1 vs 7.4

Luckily for Alexa, tennis remains unpredictable.

Jan 21st, 2012, 03:38 AM
Singles Results, First Round Top Half

[1]Pamela Bowden def. Berenika Wojnarowska 4/6, 7/6(2), 7/5
Berenika wanted a main stadium and she not only got that, but the night match too! She gave the #1 player a run for her money but couldn't finish off the #1 player in the end.

Alijah Pemovic def. Tova Saade 6/7(0), 6/4, 7/5
There were serious nerves in Alijah's match today as she is far more skilled than the junior Saade, but struggled in all three sets today.

Elise Mesane def. Yelena Pirilenko 6/3, 6/2
Elise always comes in as a favorite to Melbourne as she has won this thing on 3 separate occasions. Yelena was no match on the opening day.

Yoona Im def. [11]Cristina-Elena Vladimirescu 1/6, 6/1, 12/10
Cristina was the first seed to fall today as she and Yoona had an epic thriller out on Margaret Court. Yoona proved her seriousness today.

[12]Cornelia du Preez def. Miranda Frost 7/6(0), 7/6(2)
Coco knew to take Miranda seriously as the girl has won a few pro matches. It was close, but Cornelia played the tiebreaks nearly perfectly for the win.

Regla Torres def. Yanet Mori-Tu 6/4, 6/4
Regla is always a fan favorite down in Melbourne and had a significant cheering section in her straight set win over Yanet.

Aleesha Stosur def. Zaelly Ircha 6/4, 6/4
The crowd loved both of these but Zaelly just wasn't ready for prime time against her older (by just a little) compatriot.

Alexandra Anastadis def. [8]Sabine Graf 6/7(1), 7/6(5), 10/8
And we have our second upset of the day as the tough Alex takes out the amazing Sabine in a tight match. Alex is definitely playing for keeps in 2012.

Miranda Bothavska def. [5]Ella Felivitch 1/6, 6/4, 6/3
Miranda takes out the US Open Champion and fell to the ground in tears. It's the biggest win of her young pro career and worked very hard for this moment.

Fleri Hingisafrilia def. Emma Anderson 5/7, 7/6(4), 7/5
Fleri, the elder Aussie woman, had to be buoyed by this crowd as she was down 4/0 in that second set tiebreak. She comes away with a breath of fresh air.

Candela Sanchez def. Alina Patersson 6/4, 6/4
Candy made quick work of Alina to make an outstanding second round match against Vittoria. The two Spaniards have not spoken in some time and it will be exciting.

[15]Vittoria Perez def. Sylvie Bailly 6/4, 7/5
Vittoria did her part to take on Candy and wiped out Sylvie with ease to move on to the next round.

Emilia Jarocka-Pottinger def. [14]Jane Wong 2/6, 7/6(2), 6/3
It's official. Jane is in a slump and has slowly seen her rank fall. Meanwhile, this was a great win for Em who is on the comeback trail.

Rita Cebolla def. Mpule Kwalegobe 7/6(4), 6/4
Mpule is mentored by Ruflina, who is incredibly close with Rita. In fact, Ruflina refused to cheer for either player in this match, which was won by the Spaniard.

Susan Day def. Marteena Huubere 6/1, 6/3
Marteena wasn't herself today as she was wiped off the court by Susan in under 50 minutes.

[4]Nthamangela Mbangu-Zeric def. Anastasia Nemayeva 5/7, 7/5, 9/7
Anastasia had a ton of supporters but couldn't finish of Nthama, who is making her last appearance in Melbourne.

Lamy-Chappuis prepares for the next chapter in her tennis career

http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd108/heavensider/2-9.jpg

SYDNEY, Australia -- She's always been a face in the crowd.

The lady with piercing dark eyes and a flair for the dramatics. A girl who once was a formidable doubles player, and made her way through to the semifinals of the Australian Open. The year was 2001, and after securing 3 singles titles and 7 doubles titles, you could hear whispers that this little girl from Pattaya just might be on the cusp of making the next step forward.

Over a decade later the face is unmistakeable. A bit leaner, revealing more angles, but few lines. She smiled, remebering the face in front of her. Happy to be back on the practice court, putting the pieces back together, preparing for the next chapter in her life.

Tami Lamy-Chappuis. Chances are you haven't heard her name mentioned lately, unless the conversation turned to the easier small field days of the early 2000s. Sure she managed a singles final during the US Open Series last summer as a lucky loser, but there have been scant traces of her since. Gone have been the days of her taking interviews, and causing a stir.

She smiles and lets her mind wander -- ever so briefly -- back to the things some of us remember. Things she holds in her heart. Things that, well, haven't mattered much the past few years.

Lamy-Chappuis made a choice three years ago. She calls it stuff. Life. The responsibilites that come with love and family. The things you, well, just do because you have to; because you want to.

Her parents, Varunya and Songphon, had become alcoholics. The tough kind. The ones who needed someone to watch over them when their addiction got the best of them; ones who wouldn't get out of bed for days or would surprise the family with something at the worst possible moment.

"They were great parents growing up," she said. "But then they needed help."

Varunya died in November 2009, but Songphon? He had been in recovery for 20 months when a long struggle with prostate cancer finally took his life three weeks ago.

Lamy-Chappuis (nee Sugarn) spent the last few months immersed in details. Caskets. Friends. Funerals. "Helping someone out of this world," she said, "who's having a hard time."

And now? She's good, thank you. And ready for the next chapter in her life.

"When I've told people -- and I don't feel guilty about it -- I feel like the weight of the world is off my shoulders," she said. "I feel he's in a better place and he's not hurting. And, as far as I'm concerned, there's a certain freedom that allows me to work. And I love working at it. And I'm just having a blast enjoying the freedom I haven't had for so long."

Lamy-Chappuis is nothing if not pragmatic. It was her choice to step away from the game in 2009, and again late in 2011. Her choice to care for her parents. And, no, she really never talked about it.

"You can't compete if you're not sharp and prepared and I could never get prepared on the level I needed to, so I played poorly," she said. "I was distracted. I just always had things that were heavy and would seem to matter more. If your heart's not in it, you don't play well and when you don't get your results it's hard to work hard and it's just the whole cycle."

When people would ask where she'd been or what she'd been up to, she would say dealing with stuff. Or life. She didn't want to make excuses and people, she said, didn't want to hear them.

"It's OK," she said. "It's what I chose to do. It's what you do."

"We all have stuff. Everyone out there has stuff. This was just something that was 24/7. Your responsibility. And I knew it would be mine. If I had to do it 10 more years, I would have done it."

She pulled her father's Alcoholics Anonymous medal out of her pocket. She has it on her at all times, to remind herself of the man who finally won that battle, but lost another to cancer.

"When you make their lives so easy -- I bought them a car, bought them a house -- they didn't have to be responsible. You enable them to sit around drink and not have to wake up in the morning."

It's not an easy path to walk, but Lamy-Chappuis made it. And now she steps onto another part, trying to get her career back.

She hadn't played a match at the end of 2011, but traveled to Brisbane alone to compete in the qualifying draw. She didn't qualify, but again entered the draw as a lucky loser, falling in the opening round. She still saw a lot of good things happening in Brisbane, winning a match in doubles, an dreconnecting with old coaches and hitting partners. And, yes, she's ready to go.

She's in the field in Sydney as a qualifier, winning two matches to earn her spot, her first consecutive wins in an event since Stanford.

She'll be on the phone in the next few weeks petitioning for wild cards for events she's had past success in. With 11 years behind her, she's done well in most of them at least once.

"I am going to be such a meance to everyone," she said with a smile. "I'm going to write for wild cards, which I've never petitioned for. I'm going to show up to qualifiers and fight. I'm going to work on my game. I'm going to get into main draws."

"I'm going to ask. It's OK if they say no. I deserve nothing. I need to just go and play and get better."

And, finally, write the next chapter.

Singles Results, First Round Bottom Half

[3]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Ndjamena Zinaida Naaumy 7/5, 7/6(0)
Ziyi faced a tricky junior in defense of her title and showed a bit of nerves, but came through.

Giuseppina Benedetti def. Lindsay Galbraith 7/5, 6/2
Giusa made quick work of Lindsay today, who is still carrying the torch for all hearing-impaired athletes.

Ariel Aries def. Athea Kane 6/7(0), 7/6(3), 10/8
The Aussie carries forward her strong play of this year by defeating the former #1 player in a thriller of a match.

[LL]Bianka Harlow def. [16]Samantha Soren 7/6(4), 6/0
Bianka takes full advantage of her lucky loser position and eliminates the sixteenth seed with ease.

Xhakalina Saikikimbondwe def. [9]Jookkarae Mensarb 7/6(2), 6/4
Xhaka records the second upset and win of her pro career. This one is the biggest as it's her first Grand Slam and she defeats her first top ten player ever as well.

Luna-Willow Bartoli def. Clair McKrain 6/0, 7/5
Luna begins her long road back to the top 10 with a two set win over the American whose mind still seems to be on her studies back home.

Tami Lamy-Chappuis def. Yanina Wickmayer 1/6, 7/5, 6/3
The veteran from France is still plugging away and gets a solid first round win against Yanina, who just made the final at Hobart last week.

[7]Jennifer Casanova def. Brenda Gaga-Maduga 6/0, 7/6(6)
Jennifer is able to defeat one of the five Africans playing today. Brenda has been absent from the tour for a while, but she's back and we hope to see bigger wins later in the year.

Marta Sanchez def. [6]Harper Johnson 7/6(4), 4/6, 6/4
And another upset occurs as Marta Sanchez takes out the American hopeful in three tight sets. Marta, coached by former pro Carmen Prado, was ecstatic.

Kathleen Pryde-Degman def. [Q]Mia Henriksson 6/7(6), 7/6(6), 11/9
Kathleen struggled against Mia who was used to the courts in Melbourne. This match truly could have gone either way.

Elena Skankhova def. Stefania di Francesca-Beck 7/6(3), 5/7, 7/5
An interesting and winnable first round match for both players, which is perhaps why it was such a tight match.

Martine Kartincova def. [13]Siri Cornetsson 0/6, 6/4, 6/3
Martine is able to knock off and upset the Swede, who has bee playing consistently. This has to be the Czech's biggest Grand Slam win since her Wimbledon victory a few years ago.

[10]Chantal Chan def. Aveta Tenesova 6/4, 7/5
Chantal continues to add points to her ranking and has her eyes set on the top 5.

Nadia Banaszek def. Davae Bothavska 6/4, 6/7(1), 9/7
Nadia almost lost to the junior today, but recovered nicely in winning a tight third set.

Amelie Szczotka-Strozna def. Becky Bell 6/3, 6/0
Amelie cleans the floor of Becky and moves to the second round after 48 minutes of play.

[2]Ruflina Taliamanosoko def. Daria Afanasyeva 2/6, 6/3, 7/5
A tough first round for both players, but the Botswanian is strong in these earlier matches.

Doubles Results, First Round Top Half

Bowden/Mbangu-Zeric def. Pirilenko/Soren 7/5, 6/1
An easy win for Nthama who hasn't made much noise with her stellar partnerships so far this year.

D. Bothavska/Kwalegobe def. Cebolla/M. Sanchez 7/5, 7/6(3)
An impressive win for the juniors Davae and Mpule as they take out the Spanish team.

Hingiafrilia/Pryde-Degman def. [8]Chan/Vladimirescu 7/5, 6/1
A good win for Fleri and Kath and Chantal and Cristina are an elite doubles team.

Frost/Saikikimbondwe def. [5]Felivitch/Mesane 7/6(5), 1/6, 7/5
This was a huge upset as Miranda and Xhaka are novices at this stage of the tour. They knocked off one of the superstar doubles teams to move into the second round.

Bartoli/Kartincova def. Henriksson/Jarocka-Pottinger 6/2, 1/6, 7/6(1)
We believe this was the finale a few years ago here in Melbourne. Now it's an unseeded first round match. How the mighty have fallen.

Anastadis/du Preez def. Aries/Stosur 0/6, 6/3, 6/3
Despite being blanked in the opening set, Alex and Coco weren't deterred by the Aussies.

Singles Results, Second Round Top Half

[1]Pamela Bowden def. Alijah Pemovic 7/6(3), 7/5
Many prognosticators predicted the native upset today, but Pamela proves again she plays for the Grand Slams and moves to the third round.

Yoona could never get her foot into this match and all of a sudden, Elise is brimming with confidence. It is Melbourne, after all.

Coco was nervous about this match and it was evident in her sloppy play today. She was able to recover in time and defeat the popular veteran.

Alexandra Anastadis def. Aleesha Stosur 7/6(0), 3/6, 6/4
Alex notches another win in Melbourne and fights back the rowdy Aussie, who was giving it all she got. The home crowd wasn't able to push her through this one.

Fleri Hingisafrilia def. Miranda Bothavska 7/6(0), 5/7, 10/8
Miranda played fearlessly today against a tough opponent who had the entire Rod Lave area on her side. Fleri used that energy from the crowd to beat back her young opponent in a thriller.

Candela Sanchez def. [15]Vittoria Perez 7/6(6), 7/5
Candy gets revenge from Wimbledon, and the two had a somewhat warm embrace at the net. Could their be a repairing of the relationship?

Emilia Jarocka-Pottinger def. Rita Cebolla 6/7(3), 7/6(4), 13/11
Em is getting some good wins early in the year and barely eeks out this close one against Rita, who is looking for a good Grand Slam result.

[4]Nthamangela Mbangu-Zeric def. Susan Day 2/6, 7/6(3), 6/2
Nthama gets her second win of her final year on tour, by fighting back against the tenacious Susan.

Doubles Results, First Round Bottom Half

M. Bothavska/Harlow def. Pemovic/Tenesova 6/1, 5/7, 7/5
Miranda and Bianka take on the crowd-favored team as Alijah is from down under. They were able to dash the crowd's hopes in a 7/5 final set.

Wickmayer/Wojnarowska def. Day/Francesca-Beck 7/6(1), 3/6, 6/4
Berenika and Yanina were winless in singles, so this was a big match for them.

Bailly/Benedetti def. [6]McKrain/Skankhova 4/6, 6/0, 12/10
A weird match for Sylvie and Giusa who were able to take it in the end.

[7]Mensarb/Perez def. Kane/Minella 7/5, 5/7, 6/2
Vittoria and Jook are gone from singles, so this doubles match held all the more importance for them.

Banaszek/Torres def. Afanasyeva/Im 7/6(1), 6/3
The older team beats the younger team in straight sets to move to the second round.

Nemayeva/Szczotka-Strozna def. Galbraith/C. Sanchez 6/1, 7/5
Amelie and Anastasia win with ease today and now face the second seeded powerhouse in the next round.

After two lean years, Elise Mésane has made some succesful changes to her game
"I'm Regla Torres' body double"

http://i43.tinypic.com/ipqgjl.jpg
As the world starts notice her again, Elise Mésane has landed the cover of this month's Elle.

Melbourne, AUS - Pamela Bowden waves to the crowd when Elise Mésane enters the press room. Both ladies won their second round in straight sets, but the Frenchwoman made sure she had the lockerroom all to herself. On day 3 of the eleventh Australian Open in FWTT history, Mésane got the dubious honour of opening on Hisense Arena. With temperatures that hadn't quite reached the boiling point yet, the former champion had little trouble in putting aside South-Korean starlet Yoona Im. On Tuesday, Mésane will get the honour of playing the current world number one and two time Grand Slam champion Pamela Bowden. "I'm really hoping they'll put us on at night. I don't see any of the other three matches offering that much star power."

Mésane may be ranked outside the top 30 these days, the girl still knows how to draw a crowd both on and off the court. If Hisense Arena wasn't filled to full capacity, the press room sure is. An obvious elated Mésane answers the obligatory questions on her uneventful 2011, her personal life and how she rates her chances on a fourth title Down Under. "J'ai déjà dit that I've either won the title or lost in the first round here. But I'm quite confident that this year will be an exception. I'm already thrilled to have made it this far. You have to be realistic in these kind of events. Pamela's lethal at the Slams."

However daunting a third round against the top ranked player may be, Mésane won't enter the arena entirely unprepared. The Parisian leads the H2H 1-0 and has the obvious advantage when it comes to experience at Melbourne. "I remember that one match we played. (laughs) It was two years ago and on clay. I'm sure we can all agree that means nothing now. If we had to assign value to anything that happened so long ago, we'd still have to consider Cornelia as a potential top five player. And as regarding to my experience, I'm sure her Roland Garros and Wimbledon title will help her just fine too."

The narrative isn't as joyious when it comes to doubles. As the fifth seeds, Mésane and her longtime partner Ella Felivitch bowed out in the first round, only a day after Felivitch surprisingly lost to unheralded newcomer Miranda Bothavska. "That was quite hard to swallow, but the doubles match, but also Ella's loss in singles. She was so excited to start her first Slam as a Grand Slam champion, but I guess the pressure got to her. It's only logical, really. Being such a high seed takes getting used to. I do wish we had been able to go far in doubles, but our hearts just weren't in it." As they had a semi final to defend, the pair will probably tumble out of the top ten and lose their seeding at the next Slam.

Following her decision not to enter the mixed doubles competition, Mésane now has all the time to prepare for her blockbuster match against Bowden. Win or lose, it will be her best start to the season since 2009, in which she won her third AO crown. Having qualified for both Brisbane and Hobart, where she went on to reach the semi finals, and at least a third round showing here, the French starlet will be retaking her place among the best thirty players and her place in the spotlight. "People have already been asking what I've been up to these last two years. I just tell them I've been in Hollywood, playing Regla Torres' body double. And then we laugh. Fort."

Giuseppina Benedetti def. [3]Ziyi Zianzhi 3/6, 7/5, 7/5

[7]Jennifer Casanova def. Tami Lamy-Chappuis 6/1, 0/6, 9/7

[1]Casanova/Taliamanosoko def. Bowden/Mbangu-Zeric 6/3, 3/6, 7/5
Jennifer and Ruflina are looking to pad to their Grand Slam total here in Melbourne and get their first good win of 2012.

Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman def. D. Bothavska/Kwalegobe 7/5, 6/4
Fleri and Kath were just too much for the juniors who couldn't make it two in a row.

Bartoli/Kartincova def. Frost/Saikikimbondwe 7/6(6), 6/7(2), 6/3
Xhaka isn't too pleased with Luna as she gets close wins over her in singles and doubles today.

Anastadis/du Preez def. [4]Graf/Huubere 0/6, 6/2, 7/6(4)
Now this was an upset and Alex and Coco are brimming with confidence after such a magnificent win.

M. Bothavska/Harlow def. [3]Wong/Zianzhi 7/5, 2/6, 6/4
This was an even BIGGER upset as Miranda and Bianka randomly paired together here and knock off the year end champions and Sydney champions.

Wickmayer/Wojnarowska def. Bailly/Benedetti 6/1, 0/6, 7/5
Yanina and Berenika always play well in the slams and get a good win today.

Banaszek/Torres def. [7]Mensarb/Perez 7/5, 6/1

[2]Cornetsson/Johnson def. Nemayeva/Szczotka-Strozna 5/7, 6/4, 13/11

Mia Henriksson Finally Ready To Talk

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7168/6747334683_4ed503cf42.jpg

Mia Henriksson was having one of her best seasons up until Wimbledon last year, most players would be hungry for more competition when they feel they are in the form of their life... Mia Henriksson today spoke to the press and began to untangle one of the most complicated stories to grip the FWTT tour in many years.

A former Wimbledon doubles champion, a two time singles champion and 8 doubles titles to her name. Mia Henriksson had made a bright start to her career and had established herself in the worlds top 50 in singles, her doubles sucsess made her a household name. A solid season in 2010 had left the Swede hungry for more of the same in 2011 and she quickly made sure she followed the same path winning the singles and doubles title in Marbella early in the year, however come Wimbledon time things had started to slip and Mia's usual happy attitude dissapeared from her error dominated matches.

Behind the composed charecter, Mia was facing personal tradegy amongst a number of other issues, prior to the Wimbledon tournament Mia was forced to rush home to Stockholm after her mother was seriously injured in a car accident. Sadly Mia's mother Henrietta didnt pull through, Mia played Wimbledon still grieving from her loss. Her mum had travelled with Mia on tour to most events and Mia said her mother would have been angry should Mia have withdrawn from one of the biggest events.

Mia's dad had not been around most of her life, but after the loss of her mother the pair began to come into contact. Come the US hardcourt season Mia's dad had become her full time coach, despite never being involved in tennis. Mia's dad Henrik, forced the Swede to abandon all tournaments for the rest of the year and to focus purely on training. He worked Mia to the brink, through injury Henrik pushed and pushed her to train sometimes from 7 in the morning until late evening, 7 days a week.

'Henrik made me train till I could no longer walk, it was normal that I left the court in floods of tears due to the muscle pain' says Mia. Henrik wasnt just controlling his daughter in tennis, he forced Mia to move with him to Jonkoping in Sweden so he could control every aspect of her life including her finances, diet, friends and relasionships. 'I was a prisoner in my dad home, my life was tennis training then back home to sleep, in those few months I saw very few friendly faces. I trained because my Dad told me it would pay off and I'd make mum proud'.

In early December Mia's mothers car crash was re-investigated by Swedish Police, eveidence from the car suggested the brakes had been tampered with. This led Police to reopen the investigation, on December 13th a witness came forward and claimed Henrik had been entering the garage of Henrietta (Mia's mother) a day prior to the accident. On December the 18th after DNA testing showed the fingerprints of Henrik all over Mia's mothers car. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison and was identified to have significant mental problems. Mia escaped her sentence of being around her father and could now focus on the upcoming season. 'Even though my Dad did all this to me, their was a part of me that was sad to see him go to prison. Then I think of my mum and what he did to her and the sad turns to angry and then I can realise what a monster he was.

Already in 2012 Mia has taked the doubles title in Auckland with Pottinger and looks to get back to her highest ranking of 11. 'I know my Mum is always watching over me and I want my results to make her proud wherever she is watching from'.

Giuseppina Benedetti celebrates after upsetting world number 3 and defending Australian Open champion, Ziyi Zianzhi in the 2nd round. It was the biggest victory in a grandslam for the Italian, who has experienced much success outside of tennis's four majors.

"I felt confident playing Ziyi. I knew my game matched up well against hers, and I watched a lot of tape of her previous grandslam matches as soon as I saw that she was a potential second round matchup. She had all the pressure on her and I had nothing to lose, so to come out victorious is a great feeling."

Benedetti will face the only lucky loser of the tournament, Bianka Harlow in the round of 16. Harlow is making the most of her renewed life in the tournament, including upsetting Australian up-and-comer Ariel Aries in a classic second round battle.

"We will see how it goes. I just want to keep playing my game, but today I had no pressure, not many really expected me to win. Tomorrow, I will be the favorite so we will see how I handle that."

Benedetti's day wasn't all perfect-- she and doubles partner Sylvie Bailly crashed out in the second round of the doubles tournament, while she and fellow countryman Andreas Seppi were ousted in the second round of the mixed doubles event.

"Sylvie has a nagging injury, so I had to take the lead this week, which is a scary thought in double [laughter]. But it was just our first tournament together. We will get much better."

An on-court interview with Chantal Chan

http://www4.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Shuai+Peng+2011+Australian+Open+Day+6+S5D7spMjBjul .jpg

Melbourne, AUS World No.7 and Sydney champion Chantal Chan reached the third round at her debut Australian Open, after a thrilling and exhausting victory over veteran Nadia Banaszek, 6-7(6) 7-6(6) 13-11, in four and a half hours. Here is an on-court interview with her.

I: Chantal, what a win! Give me three words to describe this match.

CC: Exciting, nervous and tiring

I: What's going through your mind in that final set, where you fought off 6 match points?

CC: In fact, my brain had been empty since 6-6 even, i only knew that i had to fight and not waste so much time on a tennis court to lose. So i played point by point, and somehow i won the match! By the way, full credits to Nadia, she's simply an amazing player, i wish her all the best in her comeback trail!

I: So what you're going to do after this match?

CC: Well, i am supposed to go training at night. Hey coach, can i just have a day-off today??

I: You're coming into this year's Aussie Open as the Newcomer of the Year and the Sydney champ, what are your expectations?

CC: 2011 simply was an impressive opening season for me, i never thought i could be in the elite top 10 only in my first season, and winning Sydney last week certainly gives me a lot more confidence that i can do well in big stages. I hope i can carry my form last year and my goal for this year are an Olympic medal and reaching the top 5.

I: Controversy aroused when someone claimed that the coach of Mbangu-Zeric, who is also the Junior Tour Director, cheated in his favour. Your thoughts on that?

CC: I think it's inappropriate of those who said Yannick cheated :fiery:, i know him quite well and i never doubt his integrity, i think we should have more trusts on them as they simply devote themselves onto building this tour, which enables us to enjoy so much.

I: Well, it's Chinese New Year in this week. Any celebrations?

CC: I was so saddened when i learned that i can't celebrate Chinese New Year with my family in Hong Kong , but i will still go to the Chinatown and visit a few of my relatives downtown, and i hope i can receive a lot of red pockets from them! Gong-xi-fa-cai everybody!

We wish best of luck to Chantal and wish everybody Happy Chinese New Year!

Out of Sorts, Out of Sight

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f250/Wyna123/Tennis/MariaKirilenko2012AustralianOpenDay22I-Mp5x7f7Ml.jpg

MELBOURNE, Jan 24 – The first week of the 2012 Australian Open is done and dusted but take a look at the draws of the Open and you will only see US Open champion Ella Felivitch’s name in the mixed doubles draw. Felivitch, on a hot streak throughout the end of last season, has cooled down considerably in 2012, having lost her opening matches in both singles and doubles. To add to that, she withdrew from her first tournament of the year, lost in the first round of Hobart, and has only won one doubles match so far. It has not been a good start, to say the least.

When asked about it, Felivitch had a hard time explaining, meekly offering a detailed description of what has been happening. “I fell sick at the start of the season, so I decided to withdraw from Brisbane. However, I didn’t want to let Elise (Mésane) down and I knew any match practice is vital this early in the season, so I played the doubles match. We lost so it didn’t do much good anyway. Then in Hobart, I was feeling much better but still not at 100% and again, match practice was the main reason I played. I got some things going but it wasn’t enough for singles and in doubles, Elise and I only got a win. It wasn’t exactly ideal preparation coming into the Open.”

When told that Mésane attributed pressure as being her reason for losing, Felivitch readily admitted so, saying, “There’s always a certain amount of pressure after you’ve won something big, to you know, do well in the next big tournament. The pressure comes, if not from others, from yourself. So yes, pressure was a part of why I lost in the first round but there were also other factors. I was 100% healthy but I had no rhythm to my game. (Miranda) Bothavska played well and she didn’t give up and I couldn’t match her in the last two sets. That’s just how it is sometimes.”

As a top 10 player in doubles as well, it was devastating for Felivitch to have lost in the first round of doubles, especially since she and Mésane had done so well last year. However, Felivitch was wise to blame no one. “It wasn’t her fault, if anything, it was mine. Have you seen how well Elise has been playing? It’s crazy how she just turns it on in Melbourne. But yeah, it’s a bit of touch and go sometimes in doubles. We’re such good friends and partners, we will work it out soon I’m sure. Plus, there are so many new girls on the tour now, it’s hard to get a read on them sometimes. We just swing and hope our strategies are correct.”

Felivitch added, “It’s frustrating to be struggling. I had a solid off-season, then I got sick, but I’m back up and running and in practice, it’s all systems go but it just doesn’t translate in matches. Last season was the same for the most part, then it suddenly clicked and I played insanely well. But it seems like I’m back at the drawing board again.”

Where does that leave the US Open champion? She seems miffed and at a loss and to be honest, so is the tennis world. However, just like Mésane has done for so many years, Felivitch seems to be taking it all in stride, albeit begrudgingly. “I’ll continue to put in the work required but I might as well have some fun while at it. I’m still in Melbourne, Elise is still playing, I have matches to watch and play, and nights to have fun. I’ll just torment Elise with drunken nights and late practices. Heck, it’s not me who’s aiming for a 4th title here. She can suck it up and be 100% focused. Me? I’ll just taunt her with some tequila shots and Hermès bags.”

Singles Results, Third Round Top Half

[1]Pamela Bowden def. Elise Mesane 2/6, 7/6(5), 6/3
Elise was thisclose to upsetting the #1 player in the world and double Grand Slam holder to advance to the quarterfinals. But Pamela, being the queen that she is on these important events, was able to claw her way back to victory.

[12]Cornelia du Preez def. Alexandra Anastadis 7/5, 6/4
Coco and Alex are so used to being on the same side of the net, that this match was a struggle for both players. It was error-filled and lackluster, but Cornelia steadied herself on the important votes to move into the quarterfinals.

Fleri Hingisafrilia def. Candela Sanchez 5/7, 7/6(2), 10/8
The crowd was rocking on Laver today as their homegirl and now last favorite to win the title had to work it today against Candela. Fleri has created quite a bit of buzz by the Aussie press here and the pressure is mounting on her to win the title now.

[4]Nthamangela Mbangu-Zeric def. Emilia Jarocka-Pottinger 7/6(3), 5/7, 7/5
Nthama shockingly makes the quarterfinal. We say shockingly because of her poor play earlier Aussie events. Emilia gave her a run for her money and almost became an unexpected quarterfinalist, but it wasn't meant to be.
