Freeman supplements seized at customs

Reigning Olympic champion Cathy Freeman was greeted with a rude awakening when Australian customs officers confiscated a large amount of supplements originating from the United States, the Sydney Morning Herald announced late on Wednesday.

Freeman, who delighted her home country by becoming the first Aboriginal athlete in history to win Olympic gold two years ago in Sydney, insisted that none of the 30 substances in question, worth thousands of Euros, were illegal.

She simply said that the products, including vitamins, proteins and energy drinks, were to help her "train like an animal".

The explanation for the confiscation, according to Freeman, was that Australian customs have decided to "limit the importation of these kinds of substances", she said.

"It could be a blessing in disguise," the 400 metres specialist continued. "Because I am trying to get used to the idea of not needing it [the products]."

Since her heroic victory at the Sydney Games, Freeman has only competed in one major competition: the 4x400m at the Commonwealth Games in August.

She says she intends to carry on until the 2004 Olympics in Athens. With or without the products, she didn't say...
