View Full Version : Champions League: second stage

Nov 14th, 2002, 06:30 AM
So, the 16 teams for the second stage are already known. It's surprising that teams such as Bayern Munich and Liverpool are out. The draw will take place tomorrow at 11.30 in Geneva. Here some questios about the 'draw':

The draw, which takes place at 11.30CET at the Noga Hilton Hotel in Geneva, will divide the 16 qualifiers into four groups of four, with the top two in each of those groups progressing to the quarter-finals.

The eight group winners from the first group stage are the seeded teams, and according to the UEFA club coefficient rankings the top four seeds are: Madrid, winners of Group C and with a coefficient of 147.233; Manchester United FC (Group F winners, 125.729); FC Barcelona (Group H winners, 116.233); and Valencia CF (Group B winners, 106.233). T

Those four teams will go into Pot 1 for the draw, while the other group winners – Juventus FC, Arsenal FC, Internazionale FC and AC Milan – will go into Pot 2. Pots 3 and 4 will comprise the group runners-up. One club from each pot will be drawn into one of the four second-stage groups.

Teams from the same national association cannot be drawn in the same group, and teams from the same first-stage group cannot be drawn together again. The draw procedure is to be ratified at a meeting of UEFA's Club Competitions Committee in Geneva on Thursday.

Clubs qualified for the UEFA Champions League second group stage

Seeding Pot 1

With this system it's clear for example that Depor will play Manchester, and in that group will also be Juve or Inter, and Roma and Arsenal will be in the same group together with Valencia or Barcelona.

Tomorrow we'll know more about this.

AMUNT València!!! :):)

looking forward to the draw.

Good Luck Valencia!! ;)

Nov 14th, 2002, 11:40 AM
shudders! Well, at least I can cheer for one team: Dortmund... I suppose I'll have to cheer for Ajax too as they are the only Dutch team! ;) (and or else Linda will kill me). ;)

Nov 14th, 2002, 12:58 PM
There will be One Spanish team in each group
One Italian team in each group

and if Liverpool didn't mess up the draw would be pretty easy to make as there would have been 4 English teams too.

then the other 4 teams would be placed in one of the other groups

I bet SCUM get the easiest group

Man U's group = 1 Italian team plus one ESP or GER team plus i hope Ajax

The most dramatic night of football I can ever remember if your a Newcastle Fan!! We must've swapped places with Kiev about 5 times during the match but Bellamy's 92nd minute winner got us through!! :) :bounce: :bounce:

I'm still on a high and will probably be in a very good mood until some time next week!.

Our group is:

One of the 2 Milans
Barca, Madrid or Valencia
Leverkusen or Dortmund!

It's another very tough group but I'm just looking forward for seeing them at St James Park! :bounce:

Well done to Ajax as well! Nice to see my fav 2 teams progress!

Nov 14th, 2002, 06:22 PM
Manchester and Deportivo go in the same group because the first pot have three Spanish teams and Deport can't draw them, so the team left is Manchester. The same with Roma and Arsenal, they have to be in the same group because in Arsena's pot there are three Italian teams and Roma can't play another Italian, so it has to be against Arsenal. With more British and German teams the draw would be almost done...

Arsenal look sure to reach the knockout stages ;)

Seeding Pot 1
Real Madrid
Manchester United
I predicted these four would easily get through.

Seeding Pot 2
AC Milan
I didn't predict Milan to go through, but got the rest right.

Seeding Pot 3
Bayer Leverkusen
Borussia Dortmund
Got these four right.

Seeding Pot 4
Lokomotiv Moscow
Newcastle United
FC Basel
Yes, OK, so how was I supposed to know that Loko and Basel would perform better than they had any right to?

Nov 15th, 2002, 09:59 AM
This is the final draw:

Group A:
Newcastle United

Group B:
Valencia ¡¡VAMOS!!

Group C:
Borussia Dortmund
Real Madrid
Lokomotiv Moscow

ARGHHHHHHH, I Can't believe yet. I've just come from the stadium after seeing that Valencia-Ajax match. Valencia has had around 1000 goal chances, but not lauck at all (and a great goalkeeper in Ajax) and they score in minute 88, fortunately we still had time to draw in the minute 92.

But the bloody referee, WHAT A BIG MISTAKE!!!!. I had never seen a thing like that. It was in minute 10 or so of the second half. Clear fault of an Ajax player, the referee says with his finger CLEARLY no, it's not fault. An Ajax player takes the ball with his hands IN the area, so it should be penalty and red card, and suddenly the referee changes his mind and wishtels that previous fault. UNBELIEVABLE!!! (can't believe yet that moment).

I'm so nervous that it will take me a while to try to sleep ;)

Arsenal very impressive at cheating diving Romans. Totti should be banned for months, he is such an overrated cheat.

Nov 28th, 2002, 01:14 AM
Well played Arsenal tonight :) Henry showed Totti what a good striker should be, and David definitely agree with you about the cheat part.

Nov 28th, 2002, 01:21 AM
Great result Ajax  Although the fucking referee though it was right to have 5MINUTES of extra time  Otherwise we would have won!

Nov 28th, 2002, 02:52 AM
Newcastle got what they deserved
Shearer should be banned for 3-4 matches too for elbowing (he's such a dirty bastard), he got away

Roma LMAO....... they were scared stiff.

Nov 28th, 2002, 10:38 AM

WHAT A MATCH ! i'm still enojoying

bye bye magpie!

Oh shut up guys, don't talk about things you don't know. Face it Totti is among the best 5 players in the world no matter if yiu like it or not. And for those who saw the match, you know that Henry was lucky on 2 of the goals. Roma played better but it's the goals that counts in football.

Great game for Inter anyway, they proved they can beat a english team that don't cheat with a X1 full of foreigners atleast :D But in the other hand it was just Newcastle anyway.

Nov 28th, 2002, 10:59 AM
Totti is good but he is clearly overated by the italian press, he had a shocking World Cup for someone who suppose to be the golden boy. I would have Del Piero anyday!!! :) HE'S ALSO THE BIGGEST DIVER I'VE EVER SEEN  was he auditioning for the Olympics? :o

The most complete forward in Europe right now is Henry ;)

Nov 28th, 2002, 11:22 AM
Del Piero is 100 times the player Totti is
even with no legs Del Piero would still be better

Roma played better ??????? LMAO
they couldn't do anything right, all they did better was passing the ball in their own half, once they got to the half way line they were hopeless.

Never seen a team as scared as Roma playing at home before.
even the useless teams fight and give it their all.

I guess we watched diffrent games then.

The most complete forward in the world? Shevshenko when fit perhaps. Vieri perhaps? Raul? Crespo anyone?!?!?

Dp and Totti are not natural forwards anyway.

Nah why am i wasting my time arguing about football on a tennis forum anyway

Dec 1st, 2002, 04:39 PM
too bad ajax didn't win :(
congrats to the team anyway! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Arsenal outplayed Roma IMO, Henry was fortunate on one goal but made his own luck, the guy is just pure class, probably the best striker in world on current form, Roma were poor, only Zebina impressed me

I'd sooner have Del Piero in my side than Totti, never been impressed by Totti, he spends half his life eating the grass after being blown over by a soft breeze

Inter destroyed a poor Newcastle side, but that was not unexpected

Dec 1st, 2002, 05:14 PM
roma
arsenal :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:
