Autoharp? Isn't that an electrical harp that you can play on your lap? An old primary school teacher of ours had one, she used to do hymn singing sessions but I used to laugh throughout them because she quite clearly couldn't play it.

What cool pics!! :hearts:  Thanks, autoharp! I would love to see a Hooverphonic concert, too, but they're not really that well known over here. (I really got into them thanks to some of the posters on this board :D) Hmmm... can I get to this concert on 4th Dec? *eyes lighting up* :)

I live in Wales, autoharp, and I haven't been able to find the new album anywhere... I DID order it but I cancelled the order (long, not interesting story... *sigh*). I can't wait to hear it - I just adore the new songs I've heard... :)

whenever there's a thread about cool music (or bad music, for that matter), I can be certain to meet franziska! :wavey:

I'm not a huuuuuge fan (= I don't own any of their records), but a friend of mine took me to their concert here in zurich a couple of years ago. thing is, their drummer was sick or something and couldn't play. but they didn't want to cancel the gig, so they played almost the entire set without drums (one of their roadies played drums on some songs - i guess the less difficult ones)! so it was really, really special. not very danceable, granted, but so atmospheric and warm. it's one of the concerts i remember best; so lovely.

so how's their new record? i've heard it was a concept album, which scares me a little bit. anyone heard it?

The new album is Jackie Cane, and is indeed a concept album about the life of Jackie Cane (track 4 in TMT), well, the album tells the story of Jackie, who wants to become a famous singer, and she has to leave her twin sister, it's really cool and weird in the same time. first, she dreams about being a big star, then, she is a big star, but she will quickly fall into drugs and all that stuff, then when she "wakes up", she'll find out that it's finish for her, and at the end, her sister kills her, and commits suicide after...there's a great song in the album, where her sister talks to her and says:" You left and took my passion with you....(...) where did I go wrong, I'm hearing a gong announcing our final round, it doesn't matter who wins, or even who'll begins to see, that you and I are one", so after that, she kills Jackie Cane....At the first listen you think like: oh gosh, what's that???!!!:o but after, you'll looooove it!:hearts:

The site looks very nice.

Sooo, what kind of sound did they opt for in the latest album? I'm asking cause I can't imagine Geike singing stuff from he first album in that dress. lol
I always connect color blue with Hooverphonic (which they seemed to do as well judging by the album art ;) ). I also always picture Geike in a long coat with the collar turned up. Don't ask me why! Oh yeah, rain! Lot's of rain/fog. :) So, any concerts that looked like that? I haven't seen pics/been to any yet.

Hooverphonic is not bad, but I found them WAY better on their first album, "A new stereophonic sound spectacular". That record is an ABSOLUTE CLASSIC, really TIMELESS. They had another singer then. I read that she did not like the touring and it took them some time to find a new one who wanted to stick with them, nl. Geike. I have to say that I don't like her, I find her not very classy and rather superficial as a person (if I read her interviews).
There first album had much more magic in it than their current sound.
I also saw them in "The Botanique" in 1997.

Hagar
Nov 24th, 2002, 09:33 AM
BTW, their name was "Hoover" in those days. They had a problem with the vacuumcleaner's firm when they got better known and changed the name into "Hooverphonic".

Princess Fiona
Nov 24th, 2002, 11:31 AM
I have never heard "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular"... if I were to love it as much as I love the other albums I would never stop listening to Hooverphonic... :o

Hmm, you find Geike comes across in that way in interviews, Hagar? Message to self: LEARN DUTCH!! ;)

Well, Franziska, it is of course my very subjective view but Geike always gives me the impression that she wants to be the classy diva but I just don't buy it. Don't get me wrong, she's doing a good job as a singer but to my (xtremely high) standards she's not the real deal. I find her rather shallow for example compared to a real lady like Sade.

It's not just the singer change. They changed their sound on the other albums (from what I coul hear) - that's why I don't have them yet. I do like the later songs I heard too (not as much as the first album), so I'll buy them all. ;)

btw, the first album stands proudly among Massive Attack, Mono, Morcheeba and Portishead in my collection. :)

Hagar

Master Lu, mine stands next to Massive Attack as well. It's as classic as that first Massive Attack album. I am happy I managed to see the original Hoover in concert.

Thank you, Hagar. I've never read a Geike interview or seen her on TV so I can't comment, but she's very young (younger than me :o) and has had to "grow up" in public... perhaps things'll get better with age... :)

I've been playing A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular almost continuously for the last few days. and the fact that I can't seem to keep it out of my CD deck must mean something. Perhaps I'm just a sucker for the seductive-sweet vocals of Liesje Sadonius. Or maybe it's the gut-tingling basslines -- the kind you seem to feel more than hear. Or it might be the trippy/funky drum rhythms . . . or the tasteful use of sampling . . . or the brooding, dare I say film-noirish atmosphere of the whole thing . . . Whatever it is, it all adds up to the best trip hop I've heard in a long time! In a world currently preoccupied with comparing the new Portishead album to the last, Hooverphonic has snuck in the back door and taken a well-deserved seat at the trip hop dinner table. Run, don't walk . . . etc.
