After a decent start in Brisbane to her first full season on the senior tour, our own Alexandra Anastidis prepares for her first Australian Open with the tournament in Sydney.
The Greek number 1 reached the quarterfinal in Brisbane, eventually being eliminated by Vladimirescu in a very close match.
This week she will face Wojnarowska in the first round. It will be a hard game to predict, although bookmakers are giving a slight advantage vor Wojnarowska, despite the fact that Alexa won the only professional encounter the two players have had so far in the qualifying of San Diego last year.

Alexa is also teaming up again with South-African beauty Cornelia du Preez in doubles trying to get their game to perfection so close to AO.

Lamy-Chappuis prepares for the next chapter in her tennis career

http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd108/heavensider/2-9.jpg

SYDNEY, Australia -- She's always been a face in the crowd.

The lady with piercing dark eyes and a flair for the dramatics. A girl who once was a formidable doubles player, and made her way through to the semifinals of the Australian Open. The year was 2001, and after securing 3 singles titles and 7 doubles titles, you could hear whispers that this little girl from Pattaya just might be on the cusp of making the next step forward.

Over a decade later the face is unmistakeable. A bit leaner, revealing more angles, but few lines. She smiled, remebering the face in front of her. Happy to be back on the practice court, putting the pieces back together, preparing for the next chapter in her life.

Tami Lamy-Chappuis. Chances are you haven't heard her name mentioned lately, unless the conversation turned to the easier small field days of the early 2000s. Sure she managed a singles final during the US Open Series last summer as a lucky loser, but there have been scant traces of her since. Gone have been the days of her taking interviews, and causing a stir.

She smiles and lets her mind wander -- ever so briefly -- back to the things some of us remember. Things she holds in her heart. Things that, well, haven't mattered much the past few years.

Lamy-Chappuis made a choice three years ago. She calls it stuff. Life. The responsibilites that come with love and family. The things you, well, just do because you have to; because you want to.

Her parents, Varunya and Songphon, had become alcoholics. The tough kind. The ones who needed someone to watch over them when their addiction got the best of them; ones who wouldn't get out of bed for days or would surprise the family with something at the worst possible moment.

"They were great parents growing up," she said. "But then they needed help."

Varunya died in November 2009, but Songphon? He had been in recovery for 20 months when a long struggle with prostate cancer finally took his life three weeks ago.

Lamy-Chappuis (nee Sugarn) spent the last few months immersed in details. Caskets. Friends. Funerals. "Helping someone out of this world," she said, "who's having a hard time."

And now? She's good, thank you. And ready for the next chapter in her life.

"When I've told people -- and I don't feel guilty about it -- I feel like the weight of the world is off my shoulders," she said. "I feel he's in a better place and he's not hurting. And, as far as I'm concerned, there's a certain freedom that allows me to work. And I love working at it. And I'm just having a blast enjoying the freedom I haven't had for so long."

Lamy-Chappuis is nothing if not pragmatic. It was her choice to step away from the game in 2009, and again late in 2011. Her choice to care for her parents. And, no, she really never talked about it.

"You can't compete if you're not sharp and prepared and I could never get prepared on the level I needed to, so I played poorly," she said. "I was distracted. I just always had things that were heavy and would seem to matter more. If your heart's not in it, you don't play well and when you don't get your results it's hard to work hard and it's just the whole cycle."

When people would ask where she'd been or what she'd been up to, she would say dealing with stuff. Or life. She didn't want to make excuses and people, she said, didn't want to hear them.

"It's OK," she said. "It's what I chose to do. It's what you do."

"We all have stuff. Everyone out there has stuff. This was just something that was 24/7. Your responsibility. And I knew it would be mine. If I had to do it 10 more years, I would have done it."

She pulled her father's Alcoholics Anonymous medal out of her pocket. She has it on her at all times, to remind herself of the man who finally won that battle, but lost another to cancer.

"When you make their lives so easy -- I bought them a car, bought them a house -- they didn't have to be responsible. You enable them to sit around drink and not have to wake up in the morning."

It's not an easy path to walk, but Lamy-Chappuis made it. And now she steps onto another part, trying to get her career back.

She hadn't played a match at the end of 2011, but traveled to Brisbane alone to compete in the qualifying draw. She didn't qualify, but again entered the draw as a lucky loser, falling in the opening round. She still saw a lot of good things happening in Brisbane, winning a match in doubles, an dreconnecting with old coaches and hitting partners. And, yes, she's ready to go.

She's in the field in Sydney as a qualifier, winning two matches to earn her spot, her first consecutive wins in an event since Stanford.

She'll be on the phone in the next few weeks petitioning for wild cards for events she's had past success in. With 11 years behind her, she's done well in most of them at least once.

"I am going to be such a meance to everyone," she said with a smile. "I'm going to write for wild cards, which I've never petitioned for. I'm going to show up to qualifiers and fight. I'm going to work on my game. I'm going to get into main draws."

"I'm going to ask. It's OK if they say no. I deserve nothing. I need to just go and play and get better."

And, finally, write the next chapter.

(That came out longer then I had expected. ;) I had been thinking for weeks now how to spin Tami's disappearance last year, and after debating divorce and other things, I decided to go a little sadder. :(

I was actually watching an episode of Cold Case last night about a son who was caring for his mother who had alzheimer's and it sparked an idea. Although his mother actually murdered the father 10 years ago, it was till a good launching point. ;) )

Singles Results, First Round

[Q]Athea Kane def. Kathleen Pryde-Degman 7/6(2), 7/6(3)
Athea's run through the qualifying helped prepare her for match toughness against Kathleen today.

[Q]Lindsay Galbraith def. [Q]Marta Sanchez 7/5, 4/6, 7/6(3)
The two qualifiers squared off against each other for a shot at the second round. The more experienced Galbraith walked away the winner after Marta felt some nerves in the third set.

Samantha Soren def. [5]Harper Johnson 6/4, 7/5
After pulling out last week, Harper still showed some signs of weakness in her quick loss to Sam today.

[6]Jennifer Casanova def. Luna-Willow Bartoli 6/4, 0/6, 6/3
Jennifer keeps up her consistency and defeats Luna, who had a successful week last week.

Giuseppina Benedetti def. Brenda Gaga-Maduga 7/6(0), 1/6, 6/1
Giusa gets her mojo going and earns a three set win over the Somalian.

[Q]Tami Lamy-Chappuis def. [WC]Marteena Huubere 6/4, 4/6, 7/6(6)
Tami had an epic win today against the Aussie veteran.

Rita Cebolla def. [4]Nthamangela Mbangu-Zric 6/7(6), 7/6(7), 7/6(5)
Rita gets her first win of 2012 and it was dramatic. Nthama still searches for her first 2012 victory.

[3][WC]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Fleri Hingisafrilia 7/5, 7/6(6)
Ziyi had to get a wild card to be here and had a first round draw that was tough. Fleri gave it her all but came up short.

Regla Torres def. [WC]Xhakalinda Saikikimbondwe 6/7(2), 7/6(5), 7/6(5)
Regla faced against the top junior and was close to the throes of defeat, but came back the victor.

Berenika Wojnarowska def. Alexandra Anastadis 7/6(5), 3/6, 6/2
Berenika and Alexandra squared off today and in a topsy turvy match, saw Berenika come away the winner.

[7]Jookkarae Mensarb def. Yelena Pirilenko 3/6, 7/5, 6/4
Jook hasn't felt the pressure of being top 10 and still gets consistent wins, like this one over Yelena.

[8]Chantal Chan def. Vittoria Perez 7/6(1), 5/7, 7/5
Chantal, like Jook, have dealt with the pressure in Sydney by both being first round winners.

Jane Wong def. Cornelia du Preez 7/6(4), 4/6, 6/4
Jane takes away the win today from Cornelia, who is still wondering how to get that first win.

Siri Cornetsson def. Cristina-Elena Vladimirescu 6/4, 0/6, 6/2
Cristina steamrolled Siri in set two, but it wasn't enough to overcome the tough Swede.

She has 100 and was using crap points. I think it's entirely possible. LOL

It is entirely possible that someone with 80 points defeats someone with 100, but not with this scoreline.

6-7(2) = 8 points more for Xhaka
7-6(5) = 3 (or 2) points more Regla
7-6 (5) = 3 (or 2) points more Regla

So in total 2 (or 3/4) points more for Xhaka where she should have 20 less.

The number one player in the world has struggled recently as the former #1, Athea, gets another great win.

Rita Cebolla def. [Q]Tami Lamy-Chappuis 1/6, 6/4, 6/3
A good run for Tami here, who has a great 2012 ahead of her. Rita gets her first back to back wins in quite some time.

Chantal and Jane are great Fed Cup partners, but the younger player beat the elder player in a tight one today.

Torres fights back amidst controversy

The Spanish tennis star is unexpectedly into the quarterfinals of the Sydney tournament after scoring an upset win over Zianzhi.

She lost her opening match for the year last week in Brisbane and appeared dejected coming into the Australian Open warm up event.

"It definitely wasn't the best start to the year. I really wanted to win my opening match but I'm glad I'm bouncing back well here," Torres said.

Controversy was not far in her first round against the Junior No. 1. But today she appeared focused and determined in the final two sets against Zianzhi.
