Sorry, I should have opened it earlier... :o

Sorana will play Auckland, Hobart and of course the Australian Open! :bounce:

I wish her and all her fans a happy new year! :)

WTA Auckland, Main Draw:

(4)Flavia Pennetta (ITA) v Sorana Cirstea (ROU)
(wc)Sacha Jones (NZL) v Elena Baltacha (GBR)
(wc)Magdalena Rybarikova (SVK) v Elena Vesnina (RUS)
Rebecca Marino (CAN) v (6)Roberta Vinci (ITA)

I have a weird feeling that she can pull the upset here... :scared:

Pennetta will be too solid I think. :(

I like her schedule though, Hobart is another great choice. :) Hopefully she gets a kinder draw there.

Tough draw. But she will be on centre court so will be televised here (and maybe streamed?).

Curcubeu
Jan 1st, 2012, 01:38 PM
I've asked Linda and she said streams should be available today!

I'm going to watch it because Alexandra is just playing beforehand, anyway, so I will write a match report if streams allow me to do so! ;)

Lost to Pennetta 4-6, 6-7

But much, much better than the shitfest produced by her compatriot before...

Insane firepower, but also a completely show bag, switching from complete club level in the first couple of games to decent level later, insane winners followed by loosy errors most of them caused by sluggish footwork. However, one of her better days at the office especially in the defense. She should make the Top 50 in the upcoming months! :)

A performance to build up on and you really have the feeling that she can beat anyone out there on a decent day, especially with the power she offers. Getting her old coach back was the right step to take
and now I'm already looking forward to Horbat! :)

Oh, and I forgot that she saved 4 MPs, 2 at 4-5 and 2 in the TB, but on the other hand she also led 3-1 in the second and 3-1 in the TB, a typical Sorana mess... :o

Langers
Jan 2nd, 2012, 04:22 AM
Defence and footwork, her two biggest issues, amongst others. Actually the more you think about it, she is a very flawed player, but with obvious potential and upside.

Decent scoreline, hopefully she receives an easier draw in Hobart and gets a few wins there. We don't want a repeat of... 2009? where she started the season with like 6 or 7 straight losses. :o

HowardH
Jan 2nd, 2012, 05:29 AM
Lost in doubles too. 3 and 1. But ALG and Barrois are quite a tough pair.

I agree with what Curcubeu and Langers say above. Her defence and footwork is the weakness, but she always hits some huge winners. Big serve, big fh, even a big bh. Nothing Flavia could do when she was landing them. Enormous difference in forehand firepower between the two. But she loses her balance on shots too easily, and she goes for huge winners when out of position (I presume because she just doesn't believe she can defend for very long). It's funny, she looks like she is in shape, but I guess she is just lucky with her figure, because she doesn't move like she's in great shape.

If you want to play the game the way Sorana likes to play (hit big all the time) I think you need to be able to hit the first shot very well. That includes the return of serve, which Kvitova does well and Davenport did before her. Sorana doesn't hit that return well enough at the moment. So she either needs to become better with that or learn to move better and rally more consistently in order to set up her attacking shots. I'll probably review the recording later and see if there's anything more to say.

WTA Hobart, Main Draw:

(7)Ksenia Pervak (KAZ) vs. Sorana Cîrstea (ROU)
(wc)Ashleigh Barty (AUS) vs. Bethanie Mattek-Sands (USA)
Johanna Larsson (SWE) vs. sara Errani (ITA)
(4)Angelique Kerber (GER) vs. Elena Vesnina (RUS)

She has already beaten Ksenia last year and I doubt that she was in better form then...

I hope she can do some damage here! :)

vuhvuh
Jan 6th, 2012, 01:26 PM
she must beat Pervak then Beth or Barty. Beth is one of my fav players. and barty is a junior still but on twitter some people from knowing tennis reporters and that some experts writing that barty plays really wel etc. I think she should make QF otherwise for me shes real bad =/

Curcubeu
Jan 8th, 2012, 01:45 AM
Hobart, R1: Sorana Cîrstea def. (7)Ksenia Pervak 6-2 7-6(6)

Sorana was the better player throughout the match, dictated the rallies with her power (although Hobart is slower than some clay), and kept her UEs on a percentage which permitted her to never let Pervak get really into the match. Ksenia was rather useless, though, one deep ball to the baseline and she was toast. In the second set Sorana already had a MP at 5-4, couldn't convert, had 5-2 in the TB which went to 5-6 after some of the worst serves ever, but a sign of the mentally much more stable Sorana is that she held on and closed it out in 2 sets, even finishing it with a nice winner. Something which wouldn't have been that possible a few months ago! :)

Mattek-sands or Barty next!

I had to leave for uni at 6-5* in the final set and hoped so much that she would break Beth's serve and she really did it! :)

I turned on from her trailing 1-3 in the decider and what I saw was quite an entertaining match with some nice rallies and Sorana with her usual club level-Top 20 tennis roller coaster, however she fought it out in the end from a set and a break down. The mental strength which used to be one of her assets is back! :cheer:

I feel the same. Absolute madness.

Get yourself in a position to win, and then choke, and then just lose the plot and throw it away.

All the good work gone, and probably even more scarring. Lots of work to do with her game, and perhaps even moreso, her head.

Stevecw
Jan 12th, 2012, 04:17 PM
What a way to lose :( Made such a good recovery after losing that 1st set so badly...and then throws it all away from a great position. Hope it doesn't bother her too much, but a loss like that has gotta mess with her head in a bad way.

Hard to know what to make of that tweet, then Vesnina told her she loved her attitude.

not much gracious :D but you never know what will happen... everyone knows Sam´s form Down Under is not her best and she´s always under so much pressure that she´s not able to put her best performance and that could help Sori if her mind stays fresh... there´s a chance but anyway Sam is going to be very tough to beat

I tend to agree. Sam does tend to struggle with the Australian home pressure, and there is also no pressure on Sori.

Sori is not the favourite, hopefully she can relax, play a nice match and take her chances.

It took me a while to figure out what you guys meant by "gracious".
Usually in English we would use the word "kind", e.g. "a kind draw" or "not a kind draw".

I'm not sure whether this is a kind or unkind draw. Depends on how Sam plays I guess.

Extremely happy not only for the fact that she upset a Top 10 player here, but her body language and attitude completely turned around after what we got to see the last years. The first set tiebreak showed one of the most composed Soranas I've ever seen and that she was able to break sam to win the match even after wasting a couple of MPs was only prove for her will and passion.

Generally, she was so pumped up it was almost scary. She wanted the win and after the pathetic choke against Kerber last week, she even wanted it more! Of course, sam was poor, but Sorana did what she had to do and this was easily the best service performance I've seen from her for ages, the forehand as well, Top 10 level.

Sorana is clearly a confidence player and we once saw at RG what she is capable to do when she is on a roll! Next match against lil' Radwanska now, the kind of player she completely despaired of in the early past, but I can't see her losing this one now. Not to mention that she has a great darw, anyway to make R4 at least! :)

I knew she could do it, even with the slightest hope, she was so patient, with a lot of changes of pace, moon balls, top spin, flat forehand and backhand...This is like she's going back to 2009, when she's at her best, or even better! Coming up Ula and then cud b Nadia, she got chances, c'mon girl!!!

Australian Open, R2:

Sorana Cîrstea def. Urszula Radwanska 1-6 6-2 6-3

Good to see Sorana fighting back into this match after being a set down, but after wasting MPs at 5-2, I already smelled a Kerber 2.0 in the making, especially considering the similar scoreline. Luckily she learned from that experience and broke to 0 to win the match! :)

However, she shouldn't have another late start against Errani now, but you never know with her!

HowardH
Jan 19th, 2012, 04:55 AM
Yay Sorana! Keep going. The draw is opening for her like a book. Now Errani beat Nadia, so she only has to play Sara. Amazing opportunity.

A pattern- in every set Sorana has won in singles here, she did not serve it out.

Sam doublefaulted to lose the first set tb. Then Sam lost her serve at the end of the second set.

Ula also lost her serve at the end of set 2 and 3. Sorana was unable to serve the match out and had to break for the match instead.

Well, it's common in the wta. Sometimes I think the girls need 3 serves instead of 2, just to give the server a fighting chance .

Sara has a weak serve so Sorana can hopefully break her often as well, so that she won't have to serve out the sets. Much easier for Sorana to break for the set. Honestly it's a bit of a dream draw. Hope she can take advantage.

Well, I can't blame her, she received more than 3 times of medical treatment only in the 3rd set, showed how bad the injury was. She didn't open the court really well, was most of the time on defense, and well, the 1st serve was totally out of form due to injury.

Bad luck for her. But well, at least there's hope to start a great season, we'll see.
