There is no way play will start on time.

It has been raining for the past 5 days straight, and it's raining again this morning.

Some parts of New Zealand are flooding. Not Auckland though, but the rain is supposed to hang around until the 7th of January.

They have been reluctant to in the past, as this is an outdoor tournament. However, this isn't just a passing shower. Its been raining like this for 5 days straight and its not going to get any better today.

Let's take a glance at the main draw, Elena Baltacha should be satisfied as she drew Sacha Jones, but that top quarter looks to be the most dangerous of them all, with Lisicki, Arn, Goerges, Kerber, and Dokic, you could even throw Barthel in there. Not a very kind draw to the qualifiers as they all drew seeds in the first round.

In other news...Johansson forced a tiebreak after *gasp* winning a point on her second serve.

Play seems to have slowed down, but what's this? Sema's putting up a fight? She has now broken Riske to even out the second set 5-5. Bibiane Schoofs has started very quickly and has already broken Puig in this early match.

I don't know about Kuzzy. I think her chances will depend on the Qualy, but...she's always an unknown quantity this early in the year. I'm not sure McHale will get past Dulgheru at all.

What sort of name is Bibiane? I've never heard of it before...Bibiane Schoofs is certainly an incredibly unique name.....but she's letting her tennis do the talking thus far as she takes a 2-0 lead early on.

You know. I'd even say that I really like Baltacha's chances against Pennetta. Bally played Pennetta close at Indian Wells if I recall. My early upset pick would be for Bally to beat Pennetta, and even though this isn't really an upset, I think Marino will beat Vinci.

Back to Qualifying Action. Erika Sema has beaten back some strong resistance from the American, and now leads 6-5 in the second set. Kulikova has held to make it 1-1 in the all important decider. Things could get very interesting, we'll have to see how Johansson holds up here.

The Express to the Netherlands is moving along fine. Schoofs has won the first handily, 6-2. It seems that that tiebreaker between Sema and Riske was longer than Schoof's 1st set which was just 31 minutes. Sofia Arvidsson and Eva Birnerova are about to take Court 1 to do battle against each other. We can only hope for a good match!

Schoofs held to make it 1-1 in the second.

Woah. Riske isn't messing around. That was a quick hold to open the Third. 1-0.

Bibaine Schoofs isn't messing around here, she didn't come to New Zealand to par-tay, she came all for business, as she breaks Puig to go up 2-1.

Riske must be furious with herself. She's taking some of that anger out on Erika Sema--she's now up 2-0 in the third!

Seems like Erika is running out of gas now. she wasn't so happy with her health either she said in her blog if I'm not mistaken.
But she fought very well.
and it's good for TT

Schoofs really too strong for Puig, she can make some noise in WTA this year if she will avoid a slump (what is a problem often).

Alison Riske now up 3-0 in the Third. This doesn't bode well for Erika Sema. Bibaine Schoofs also cruising as she now leads 3-1 in the second.

In unrelated news, let's take a look at my TT Differences.

simonsaystennis (USA) vs. (7) Ianto_Jones (GBR)
[Puig, Kulikova, Mirza, Bremond, Craybas, Parmentier vs. Schoofs, Johansson, Vandeweghe, Kr.Pliskova, Ka.Pliskova, Fichman]
SR Differences: Puig 2-1, Kulikova 2-0, Wozniak 2-1, Riske 2-0, Mirza 2-1, Bremond 2-1, Craybas 2-1, Hlavackova 2-1, Parmentier 2-0 vs. Schoofs 2-0, Johansson 2-0, Wozniak 2-0, Riske 2-1, Vandeweghe 2-0, Kr.Pliskova 2-0, Ka.Pliskova 2-0, Hlavackova 2-0, Fichman 2-1

I have to be one of the worst pickers of the century to have this many differences.

We'll see what happens next.

Arvidsson has quickly broken Birnerova to lead 1-0. Puig has held to make it 2-3 against Schoofs (who is still a bundle of wool in my mind...) Alison Riske is en route to serving up a bagel to Erika Sema, but she just wasted a break point to go up 4-0.

Ianto_Jones

Alison Riske not wasting any time here. She's up 4-0 in the deciding set. What is it with these blowouts in the deciders. First, Kulikova breadsticks Johansson, and now....Sema is in danger of being bageled. Arvidsson has held to lead 2-0 in the 1st set. The Sheep on Court 2 (Schoofs) has broken open this set and leads 4-2.

Okay. Schoofs and Puig...are locked in a TITANIC battle to win the 7th game of the 2nd set, this could make it or break it (That's also the name of a show on ABC) for Monica Puig.

Arvidsson just 2 points away from her bagel! That would be a GREAT start to the year. I also just want to shout out to Vania King who had a great start with an impressive dismantling of a (probably incredibly nervous) youngester in Ash Barty over in Brisbane.

Arvidsson has now recorded her bagel, and will continue to try to advance to the next round.

Monica Puig has finally HELD against Schoofs, however, Schoofs still has a break in hand and leads 4-3 to serve.

Yup! I think you have the upper hand now though, after Schoofs choked.

The Pliskova's came through in a big way for me though. Now it's down to whether Vandeweghe or Finchman can win for me.

I would have continued had my friend not needed a ride from a stupid party. :fiery:
