I keep my expectations low to avoid disappointment. But I secretly also want her to win that golden slam :D

She draw Yakimova first round in Brisbane. Same half as Williams same quater is Clijsters.

Sammy beat Yakimova in 2005 comfortably on carpet - and she is only 5"5' so I think that's a pretty good first round match up.

Might be a good chance to get a win over Clijsters. I would hate to see the vitriol in GM in the lead up to a Sam-Serena rematch.

Here is the entire draw. Sam is clearly in the half of bloody death. Potential second round match up with Safarova is dangerous.

(1)Stosur v Yakimova
Benesova V Safarova
Ivanovic v Paszek
Halep v (5)Clijsters

(4)Williams v Scheepers
(wc)Dellacqua v Jovanovski
Q v Czink
Hantuchova v (8)Cibulkova

(6)Jankovic v Suarez Navarro
Zakopalova v Q
Voskoboeva v Q
Pervak v (3)Schiavone

(7)Pavlyuchenkova v Hercog
Q v Kanepi
(wc)Rogowska v Zahlavova Strycova
Peer v (2)Petkovic

You are completely right, of course. :yeah: Sadly I won't see her domination of Brisbane - barely one bar on a 3G connection here in northern NZ - forget about TV or wireless.

Thats a tough draw, but could be a blessing to have some tough matches to begin the season. I think she can beat Kim if it comes to that, a match vs Serena would certainly be interesting.

Not an easy half of the draw for Sam, but on the other hand I guess you gotta expect tough draws & matches from her now that she is in her career best form. The tougher the matches, the better I'd say.

Good to get the first win out of the way. In terms of ranking points, she's already exceeded last year's result here. Wasn't an amazing performance, but her serve and forehand looked great, so I think good signs.

It's the pressure of being a hot favorite playing on home turf. She obviously expects a lot from herself. USO final is case in point - underdog playing like nothing to lose. Just not the same in Australia.

Its be been like that the last couple of years, but this year its to the extreme. She's a GS champ now so the expectations are super high and even more so from people who make not follow tennis all the time. They'll see she's won one so would expect her to win more. She looked confident tonight, but if she gets to matches vs Kim, and vs Serena I think thats where we can measure what frame of mind she's really in.

Definitely. It makes me think of that drifting shot that Sam let go by in the first game of the USO final, where she just kind of accepted she'd made a mistake, shrugged it off and got back to owning Serena. Hopefully by the time the AO starts she'll have that mentality back.

Anyway, it's still a very positive start to the year overall.

I guess we couldn't expect her personality to magically transform on the basis of winning a single tournament, but I thought she'd be a little calmer knowing that she already had a grand slam in the bag.

Isn't handling the left handers to well recently - Benesova, Czink, Kvitova. The kicking serve in the AD court probably doesn't affect them as much.

Probably a week to forget in Aussie gals tennis. Everyone was pretty average.

Huntress55
Jan 4th, 2012, 03:57 AM
I mean Iveta played pretty amazing though. And although Sam wasnt terrible she wasnt at her best, because even when she was getting chances to hit FHs I dont think she did enough with them. She just looked down the whole match right from the start. But its just the second match of the year, Im sure DT can pick Sam up and they can train hard for Sydney and then of course AO :)

Its weird though, cause they did say she won 7/10 matches against leftys last year and 2 losses were against Petra who had a great year. Shes beaten Iveta before, I just think Iveta played a pretty much perfect match today, she really attacked Sams BH and hit some great serves.

I really hope she has a positive Sydney and makes the semis there (at least). I think having a circuit breaker after this result will be necessary if she wants to make the second week at the AO.

Or alternatively, she does well at Sydney, everyone's expectations rise, and she struggles with the pressure. I don't know :sobbing:

Huntress55
Jan 4th, 2012, 04:27 AM
Yeah if she does well in Sydney expectations will rise, if she loses early in Sydney they might lower but Sams confidence might lower as well. It is difficult here in Australia for Sam to get the upper hand, there is always alot of pressure. I thought she might handle it abit better after her USO win, however this loss today doesnt mean she wont. She came across a red hot Benesova, hopefully she can get a few good wins in Sydney. Its a tough field though.

You never know though, she could have a crap Sydney and still do well in AO. It really is one match at a time :p
