Giuseppina Benedetti and Sylvie Bailly Set to Team up in 2012
Italian Giuseppina Benedetti announced Thursday that she will be teaming up with French woman Sylvie Bailly in doubles for 2012. On the surface the two seemingly have little in common, but that is not the case. Both women, along with long time tour veteran Regla Torres, are arguably the most successful current players to not have success in singes at grandslams. Bailly, who reached the top ranking in singles at the end of 2010, has won numerous large titles, but has been unable to reproduce her success in the grandslams. Benedetti, who reached a career high ranking of #3 in singles around the same time Bailly topped the rankings, was the top player on clay in both 2009 and 2010 and was the US Open series winner in 2010 as well. She has never been past the quarterfinals of a grandslam in singles, however.
Both players have had success in doubles, though, with Bailly having won 2 mixed doubles grandslam titles (2009 Roland Garros and again in 2010), and Benedetti having won the women's doubles title at Wimbledon last season. Both women will also be looking to raise their singles ranking, as each is lower than they have been in the past couple of years with Benedetti at 21 and Bailly at 32.
"I am incredibly excited to play doubles next season with Sylvie Bailly. To have a partner of that caliber is amazing. I am hoping we can live up to our expectations and become one of the "power" teams of 2012. I know that it my singles game will improve as well, getting to practice with Sylvie every day. Our number one goal is to win a grandslam together, and I think we can do it!"
The pair will begin their partnership at the Australian Open, after Bailly fufills her obligations to play with retiring star, Nthama Mbangu in Brisbane.
