Italian Veteran Seeks Consistent Doubles Partner

Italian tennis star Giuseppina Benedetti released a statement through her publicist on Wednesday, announcing that she will be looking for a new permanent doubles partner for the 2012 season after a two year stint partnering with long time tour veteran Lindsay Raymond. She also reaffirmed her commitment to the tour.

"I am both saddened and excited to announce that I wil be seeking a new partnership for doubles in 2012. Unfortunatey, Lindsay [Raymond] is unsure of whether or not she will be competing this season. She was an amazing partner and I will miss playing with her but we will remain close friends."

"I would like to play with someone who will be consistently playing in the same tournaments as me. As always, my goals will be to win grandslams and quaify for the year end championships. I didn't know Lindsay or Larissa [Ovechkina---Benedetti's partner before Raymond] well before I started playing with them, but both have grown to be two of my best tennis friends."

"The rumors that I am retiring or that my commitment to the tour is waning is just that---a rumor. I took a lengthy vacation after last season, my first in two years. I am now feeling revigorated and have been training hard for Australia."

Benedetti has had a successful career in both singles and doubles, although her consistency in doubles has been suspect. While the 2011 season was her worst since her rookie season in singles, 2011 was her most successful doubles campaign. She reached a career high in doubles topping out in the lower end of the top 10, and captured her first grandslam, teaming with Raymond to capture the most coveted grandslam, Wimbledon. Benedetti has won numerous other tour titles in doubles and was a finalist with Ovechkina at the 2009 US Open grandslam. In singles, Benedetti has risen as high as 3rd in the world in 2010, only one win away from being the 2nd ranked player. She has won many tour titles and has shown consistency in the rankings, but has failed to have any success at the majors, a trend she has openly admitted that she hopes ends soon.
