In Munich last year, Serena J. Williams, then number 10 in the world, made a commitement in the year 2002 to win more slams, and to make a big go for the number one ranking. "I'm tired of being ranked below those who I'm beating" she said. With this decalaration, everyone thought that she was blowing smoke. With her heartbreaking wins in 2001, Serena knew that she had what it took to become the top player, but it was all in a matter of what was in her head.
January- Serena with a renewed fitness and mental toughness, but luck wasnt on her side, as in the Semifinals of the Adidas International, Serena badly hurt her ankle and wasnt able to compete in the Australian Open.
Febuary-She continued her rehablitation on her ankle, but didnt let it get her down.
March-Comming back from injury, she beat the Aussie Open finalist, Martina Hingis and the Aussie Open champ, Jennifer Capriati to win the State Farm Tennis Classic in Scottsdale, Arizona with this win she kept her older sister then number one Venus, on top of the world rankings, to win her first title of year.
Not dropping a set the entire tournement and then the eighth seed, Serena was the first since Steffi Graf in 99 to beat the top three seeds (Martina Hingis (3) in the quarters, Venus Williams(2) in the semis, and (1)Jennifer Capriati in the finals. to win the Miami Masters
April- After a quarterfinal finish in the family circle cup. Serena prove a lot of people wrong about her ability to win on clay. She got to the German Open final where she gave Justine Henin (a person who practically eats clay) a fierce battle losing in 5-7 in the tiebreak of the third set.
Proving once again, the detractors and doubters wrong, she stunned everyone by winning the Italian Open defeating the then reigning French Open Champ, Jennifer Capriati in the semis and then exacting quick revenge with a 7-6(8-6) 6-4 win over Justine Henin, who beat her in the German Open final the week before. These wins gave Serena the confidence she needed to do well at Roland Garros.
May- Beat the 2000 FO champ Mary Pierce in the quarters and the 01 FO champ Jennifer Capriati in the semis with a classic match in the latter. With this win, Serena showed her new mental toughness and the ablility to hang in there and play her heart out. She then beat number two seed Venus Williams in the final to win her second Grand Slam of the year and her first in three years!:bounce:
June-July- Won Wimbeldon, shutting down a hot Amelie Mauresmo in the semis and beating two-time defending champ and top seed Venus Williams in the finals. With this win, she acheieved what she had wanted all along.. THE NUMBER ONE RANKING!:bounce: :bounce:
Despite being up 4-1 in the third, Suffered only her fourth loss of the season losing 5-7 in the third to Chanda Rubin in the quarterfinals of the JPMorgan Chase Open in LA.
Withdrew from the Canadian Open with tendionitis in her knee, where she was defending champion.
August-Won her third consecutive Grand Slam at the US Open beating Lindsay Davenport, and two time defending champion Venus Williams in the semis and finals, showing why she is number one.
September- Won the Tokyo Princess Cup, beating Kim Clisjsters in the finals
October- Won the Sparkassen Cup,beating Justine Henin and Anastasia Myskina in the semis and finals.
