Johnson Announces Withdrawal from December Exo Events Citing Back Injury
Boston, Mass. - In a surprise announcement, American Harper Johnson said on Sunday that she will not take part in any of her previously scheduled exhibition events during the month of December. Johnson, who recently finished the 2011 season at #6 in the world in singles and #3 in the world in doubles along with partner Siri Cornetsson of Sweden, said in a press release to the FWTT that she is suffering from a partially herniated disc in her lower back. The injury, which Johnson says first made itself apparent during the season ending FWTT Championships, will not require surgery at this time. However, the statement did state that Johnson would be receiving medical attention at the world renowned Beth Israel Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts and that she would take her recovery step by step to insure proper and long lasting correction of the issue.
"I am deeply disappointed not to be able to take part in the year end exhibition events," said Johnson in the release. "Each event is special to me and helps raise funds and awareness of serious social, medical, and cultural issues across the globe. However, my health must be my #1 concern at this time. Myself and my team are working hard to get healthy and be ready to return to the tour in January. At this time, there are no plans to withdraw from any events in 2012. We fully expect and intend to be ready to go when the new season begins in Australia."
Johnson is scheduled to begin her 2012 campaign in Brisbane on January 2nd.
