View Full Version : Best Quality Match of 2011? Most Dramatic Match of 2011?

Haven't seen this thread up yet...

What was the best high quality tennis match of the year (meaning both players, not just one)?

What was the most dramatic match of the year (This doesn't include a shocking win or anything or the sort. I'm talking some real diva shit consistently through the match.)

You can list a few or just one.

I haven't watched much tennis this year but Petko vs. Aga was pretty good quality. I now there was a few during the Australian/spring season as well.

JaJa and Fran at Cincy was some PEAK stuff in the drama department. Idk what cold top that.

List and Discuss :)

I was waiting for that. I haven't seen it personally but I heard that the last set is the only thing that is really high quality.

Of course not top quality, but Wickmayer-Morita at RG was much better than you'd expect it to be  Looong rallies with plenty of winners from both.

The two things that really resonate with me from 2011 were the first few days of Wimbledon and Stosur at the US Open.

There were some great Centre Court matches early on at SW19. Date Krumm - Venus, Dokic - Schiavone and also some Lisicki match. For a few days there the WTA really out performed the ATP, and on the sports biggest stage to boot!

Stosur's matches against Petrova, Kirilenko and Serena were all phenomenal. She was really the star of the tournament.

EDIT: Of course the Beijing F between Radwanska and Petkovic was match of the year IMO, how could I forget ;)

Totally agree! But I wish Flavia had won that match. Anyway, apart from the other ones you've already mention, I'd add that second set at the USO between Serena and Azarenka, which was pretty amazing. Great tennis from both girls!

Drama: Rome R1 Queen Bethanie def. Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 4-6, 6-3

Darkness overcast the sky as the fighting fashionista took on Italy's own number 2, Flavia Pennetta. The audience was loud and boisterous, rooting every chance they got for their home crowd hero. The match momentum swung back and forth. Queen Bethanie was in peak form, hitting amazing winners down 0-40 or 40-0 then on GP/BP some stroke enducing error. Flavia was in peak Sucketta mode hitting revolting errors then cussing up a storm. In the end, her majesty was too invested to crap this match away, so she picked off Sucketta's mid court balls and ended the crowd's & Flavia's misery.

Serena-Azarenka at the Open deserves a mention. The second set in particular was unbelievable.

For me it was the US open F. Serena wasnt playing her best but a large portion of that was because Stosur shut her down. Serena is well known for clawing her way into matches and if Stosur wasnt mentally like a wall in that match she would of derailed after the mini-tirade Serena pulled halfway through the match. It was the only time Serena has been beaten in a Slam final by someone not named Venus or Sharapova.

Venus was ridiculously passive. Added to the fact that she was SO slow moving out of corners, she was being out-hit within 2 or 3 fairly standard rallying shots.

Some lovely shot-making of course, but it reflected rather worse on Venus in general that match. Highlighted a rather harsh physical decline:sad:

Actually Venus was playing really good at 1R and 3R.
Many players made to be passive at Kimiko's match.

That's because Kimiko takes the ball really early and her shot is very low.
It's hard for some players to adjust, especially the first encounter.
And the grass court...

It was an interesting match not only Kimiko had a variety of shots,
but Venus needs to cope with it and required to be creative to fight back.
Battle of 2 different stlye of Tennis, and 5time Wimby champion managed to win through but nice try KDK. :)

Second set was INSANE. Probably not the best overall match, but probably one of the most tense/high-quality sets of the year (behind Sveta/Fran AO 3rd set).

Schiavone vs Kuznetsova Australian Open

This should win easily followed by the Sam v Nadia match at the USO which was of the highest standard and the third best match I saw this year was the USO final for it was dramatic with Sam playing a great match against a fired up Serena.

With special mention to the Bejing Final. both Radwanski and Petrovic won my respect that day and I think both could go close to the top five this coming year

I think Schiavone/Kuznetsova is overrated, but that's probably because I think both players are sometimes too cringeworthy to watch.

Best quality from both players were, IMO,
-Goerges/Sharapova in AO
-Azarenka/Pavlyuchenkova in Rome
-Williams/Date-Krumm in Wimbledon
-Kvitova/Azarenka in Istanbul

I think those are my favorite matches of the year, quality wise. Second set between Williamsova and Azarenka in NY was great to watch, even though the outcome was probably NID throughout. Some of the shots were  though.

I also feel that Sexa d. Sexa was a bit overrated. It was definitely high drama, but there were better matches tennis-wise. I have to go with Venus d. Date Krumm, I honestly thought she was going to lose that match 6-7 1-6 or something, since that usually happens these days when relative(or complete) nobodies see Venus and start playing the tennis of their life. The first set was ridiculously high quality, almost like a jump back in time to the 90s, and even then it would have been considered one of the best matches in any year it was played.

^^ I agree.

I really enjoyed the second set of the IW final between Bartoli-Wozniacki. Both players were using all areas of the court and Marion was coming up with some very creative ways to win points.

The highlights of Radwanska-Petkovic are pretty great.

If Aga would just learn not to powder puff her second serve she could be a slam contender.

Until then, no.

If her coach has sense, serve and especially second serve will be the main focus of her off-season training. With her frame she should be able to serve much better than she does, though she is getting more speed on the first serve in this match.

IMO, the best quality match this year was Venus-Kimiko at Wimbledon. Stunning tennis, especially from Kimiko! I was nervous throughout the match (being a Vee fan) so I didn't realise how GOAT it actually was until I watched highlights of it  Special mention to Sexa-Sexa at AO as well

The most dramatic match I saw was Jelena-Maria at Cincinnati, although I heard JJ-Sexa was pretty dramatic as well

Good combined quality of play list.

I would add Kvitova vs Jankovic at Linz, for quality of play. That was a great match, for those who haven't seen it. You can watch the full match at Youtube if you're a Jelena or Kvitova fan (or just a fan of excellent shot making, serving, returning, court coverage and defense to offense).

I would also add Pennetta vs both Shuai and Sharapova at the US Open (if my mind serves me correctly) for sheer drama, great comebacks and heart.

And of course Schiavone vs Kuznetsova at the Australian Open was epic.

Fran vs Sveta @ AO
Kimiko vs Venus @ Wimbledon
Stosur vs Kiri @ US Open
Aga vs Petko @ Beijing
Petra vs Vika @ YEC

Special mention to Sabine - Goerges at Stuttgart. Both girls going for winner after winner.

Most dramatic? Kiri vs Oprandi from AO. Wasn't on a show court (sadly) but wowza. Kiri breaking the net, Oprandi pissing Kiri off with her millions of drop shots and then yelling at a kid to shut up when she started choking... which was after Kiri had choked a 5-1 lead in the second.

The atmosphere, drama, and level of play in the Kvitova-Kuznetsova match in the Fed Cup final were all outstanding.
