View Full Version : Top 5 Bitchy/ Spoilt Brat moments in Womens Tennis

Just thinking the other day which are the most bitchy/ spoilt brat moments in womens matches I can remember.

My top 5 are:

1) match between Snyder and Conchita Martinez where Snyder mocked Martinez and refused to shake her hand at the end.

2) Wimbledon back court match between Rodionova and Kuznetsova. Kutzy refused to shake Rodionovas hand at the end of the match, sore loser?

3) Hingis famous spoilt brat, spit the dummy moment at the French Open final 1999

4) Serena 2009 US open final threatening to ram a ball down asian line ladies throat

5) Serena 2011 US open final yelling before point was over and carrying on like a brat.

Wingis' legendary final against Graf at the French. Nothing tops that.

Jameka going all ghetto on Shino and Eva are close seconds though :worship: "You're unattractive... inside" is already one of the best quotes of all time. Still gives me so much life

Honorable mention to the has-been bitch fest that was the Conchita-Patty match. I swear I laugh myself to tears when I watch those highlights with Crazy Patty keeping the balls and Conchita humping the air with a "VAMOOOOOOOOS!" every time she won a point.

Not in any particular order but my fave bitchy moments are:

1) The whole tit for tat exchanges between the WIlliams sisters and Hingis. Hingis said

"Being black only helps them. Many times they get sponsors because they are black. And they have had a lot of advantages because they can always say, 'It's racism.' They can always come back and say, 'Because we are this color, things happen.'" -Martina Hingis

"She just speaks her mind and you know I guess it has a little bit to do with not having a formal education"-Serena Williams

2) The whole Irina Spirlea/Venus Williams 'bump' incident followed up by Sprilea's charming quote 'she just thinks she's THE fucking Venus Williams', Ricard covering himself in glory with a racial slur calling her a 'white turkey'

3) There are worse incidents than this, but one of my all time faves is the bitchy handshake Graf gives Navratilova after the 86 US Open semi final that she lost having had match points. The handshake is a mere touch of hands, Graf practically runs off the court so fast that Martina goes to put a consoling hand on Steffi shoulder at net after the 'handshake' but Graf is already out of arms reach so Martina just shrugs her shoulders

4) I never saw it, but having read about an exchange between Peter Graf and Pam Shriver in 'Passing Shots', I wish I was around to see Peter Graf call Pam a 'stupid american' to have Pam turn around and say 'you wanna talk about a stupid race, lets start with the german's'

5) The Conchita/Patty run in should also get a mention. Loved the way Patty kept holding onto the ball just used whenever Conchita won a point because she knew Conchita has the superstition where she always wants the same ball she just won a point with.

If theres one thing thats certain in tennis, its that if someone doesn't shake Rodionova's hand after a match, it will 100% be Rodionova's doing and 100% Rodionova's fault.

I've got some old ones

Irina Spirlea being defaulted in Palermo for telling the umpire to f*** off in Italian - now that is what I call style!

Tara Snyder got defaulted for throwing a racket and hitting a spectator

Hana Mandlikova locked herself in the toilet at the US Open and refused to come out after losing to Claudia Kohde-Kilsch one year

Manuela Maleeva's mother frogmarched her off court during a junior match when she was displeased over some decision

Laura Arraya Gildemeister was another player that got defaulted during a match, I think it was with Beth Herr. Can anyone remember why?

what actually happened between Smashnova and Marosi Aracama?

I was actually at this match. Smashnova had won the first set 6-2 and squandered umpteen chances to win the match in straight sets and eventually lost the 2nd set 7-5. She hit a ball away in anger and smacked a female spectator square on the forehead with it ( accidentally ). The spectator was in floods of tears, the referee was called and it was pretty much decided that smashnova should be defaulted. Marosi was also saying she should be defaulted :) but the spectator intervened and said she would be mortified if someone got disqualified over this so Anna had a lucky escape and won the match.

Didn't Hauntucova pull out of her doubles competition with Davenport at the AO in 08? because she thought she had a chance of winning the singles title? Or so I heard from the commentators, give that girl some resperidone. Not bitchy or spoilt, just delusional. What's worse was Ivanovic squeaking her shoes throughout the whole tourney and denying it, hence why I hated her since.

One catty moment issss..

Huber was on Wimbledon radio once and proclaimed the whole break up story with Black  Hilarious, totally painted the most darkened landscape of Black and how it was mainly Black's fault, her rudeness, her hunger to be number 1, desperation and frustration to beat the William Sisters, crumbling underpressure, ignoring her, not returning texts and pure impoliteness.

Definately not TOP 5 or even TOP 50, but I remember a 2008 Wimbledon match between Samantha Stosur and Nicole Vaidisova where Nicole was beyond petulant. She won the first set 62, a tad closer than the scoreline suggests, then came out for the second set and the first few games went Stosur's way. 62 *03, after having break points in the previous Stosur service game - the longest game of the match.

From then on it was all out TANK from Nicole. Just taking huge swipes at the ball, missing smashes, non existant footwork, playing like she was parked at a metre, attempting slice backhands  The whole match is uploaded on Daily Motion but this video shows from 62 03 >>> http://dai.ly/pmQMr2

She went on to be bagelled by Stosur, 62 06. But I actually think her lack of effort in the second set put Stosur off more than anything, robbed her of all rhythm, and when Nicole came out in the third set and actually tried Stosur was horrible. GSM Vaidisova 62 06 64

Pam Shriver was evil. I still haven't forgiven her for calling Manuela and Katerina Maleeva 'Boo' and 'Hoo' for crying so much!!!

Is this for real?

I advise you to watch the interview or at least read the scripts. That Serena 's interview's theme was light hearted and extremely funny, easily the funniest interview was given by a tennis player or any athletic. Reporters were laughing throughout the section. Serena was wearing a Tshirt which has the line " Are you looking at my titles? " on her big boobs.

When she said " If You hold 3 GS titles and maybe you should be #1 but not on WTA tour obviously so...My motivation is make me just to win another GS and stay #2, I guess. ", it was more of a criticism about the WTA tour.

Those reporters then asked her what number does she see herself at the moment and what's about Safina's position, Serena answered " "I see myself as number 2. It's where I am. Dinara did a great job to get #1. She won Rome, Madrid . "

The whole room broke down laughing. Serena tried to hold hers, but couldn't, then she had to hide her face away from the camera.

People with a little inteligence could easily see where these came from and the circumtance of the situation. It was clear that Serena didn't mean to degrade Dinara while the reporters tried to exploit the plot for delicious details for their articles.

Sadly, there are always some people who find fun while making someone looks evil when they are not. I try to believe the attemp to make Serena looks like a bitch didn't come from malice, rather stupidinity which is often the norm on this board.

Hingis could fill this thread up all by herself, really.

She was juggling tennis balls while Graf was being treated during a medical time-out. She also said Graf's era was over and that she was getting too old. Her behaviour during the French Open final. She dumped Novotna as her doubles partner because she was "too old and slow" (which she later denied). She compared herself to Sanchez-Vicario, saying they had similar games, but "it's just that I have the better shots and better technique". Her "half a man" comment on Mauresmo. Saying "boy, that was easy" after double bagelling Kournikova... to her face.

Yeah, I agree. And people seem to forgot Rodionova won that match. It's not like she was trailing and suddenly got lucky to go through.

But Rodionova has tonnes of bitchy moments. The match against Keothavong at Wimbledon last year was just hilarious.

She said that to Davenport, who was still a half dumptruck.

But Davenport knew it was intended as a joke even though a bit of arrogance was in the air. She said once that people had mistaken Hingis' jokes for pure arrogance.

But yeah, basically it was arrogance that caused Hingis to speak her mind without careful thoughts.

Hana Mandlikova said that Martina Navratilova was like a man with all the muscles she had.

In her autobiography, she accused Helena Sukova of being a Communist spy who informed on her to the authorities.

:inlove: "What rivalry? I win all the matches."

"Shall I serve first, or do you want me to break you?" is my absolute favourite from her.

Hingis. is. love.

You do realise that the reporters weren't laughing because Serena was saying anything particularly funny. It's just something press people do. When someone they're interviewing starts being a bit controversial, they all laugh at the 'jokes' in order to pander to their ego so they carry on saying stuff and perhaps they can get something even better out of them.

It's natural for anyone. If you're talking to a bunch of people and they're all cracking up at your jokes, you feel like you're on a roll and carry on making jokes.

Now something about the match of the qualy weekend. Anastassia Rodionova vs. Ekaterina Dzehalevich. One can always expect some entertaining stuff from Rodionova, but this time we had somebody who could deal with Nasty Nastya. Ekaterina Dzehalevich coming in as an ALT for Niculescu outbitched Nastya here. Dzehalevich has no weapons, no power in her game, but she is one of the most clever players I have seen. Her tactic was rather simply... let Rodionova self destruct. And she did. Dzehalevich was playing smart, flat, soft balls into the T-line and waited for Rodionova to overpower. Rodionova was pissed off from the very beginning of the match and couldnt find a way to deal with Dzehalevich's play. Instead, she started insulting Dzehalevich is Russian. Dzehalevich then said to her "Come on, translate, say it in english so everybody can listen". Rodionova was :fiery: and said something in Russian again. "She said bitch now" coming from Dzehalevich. Now it was time for Dzehalevich's next tactic. Moonballs. She send a high moonball to Rodionova who then moonballed back, but Dzehalevich came to the net and smashed the ball away. She did that several times and Rodionova's racquet landed on the court several times. Rodionova then started arguing with the umpire that Dzehalevich is taking too much time in between points. "I am the one dictating the pase when I am serving!" The referee said "How many times did we wait for you to be ready to return?". I though Nastya would kill him now. :o As they match moved on Rodionova adjusted to the moonballs and it was Dzehalevich who now started grunting really loud and long. She long that when Rodionova was hitting the ball she still grunted. And it helped again. Rodionova then began talking in Russian again to Dzehalevich, but Dzehalevich just pumped her fist and screamed "Come on" in Rodionova's direction. Dzehalevich was pumping her fist and screaming come on after every point now and she went on to win 64 63. Of course there was no handshake at the net. Rodionova shook neither Dzehalevich's nor the referee's hand. Dzehalevich was saying in a very ironic way "Thank youuuuuuuu!". Well Nastya, you were OUTBITCHED.

I'm think that Jelena meant it like "she talks as like she's just as good as Serena Williams".

I think Jelena's point was that Marion was coming across like she felt that she was one of the tours best players, when in fact she's just a regular tour player.

The bottomline is Serena was asked and answered those questions. She didn't try to mock anyone. Imagine you are in the room being interviewed with all the tricked questions. Serena did not say anything evil on the day. That was my point in order to response to the loser who is so petty to make something out of nothing.

I take some of Serena's jokes on the day over those people who are so pressed and ready to find faults then accusse anyone for anything. Take it easy, dudes. Your life will get better once you take things more lightly and hate less.

She also got really mad at the australian open the same year when Monica spend too much time in the bathroom!

Same Capriati screaming at the umpire at the us open semi 2004 against Dementieva. The umpire made a mistake and gave a point to Capriati which without any doubt belonged to Dementieva. The umpire corrected the mistake straight away, and so the point, , as it should have been in the first place, went to Dementieva. I don't need to spread 'hate and lies', as you put it because Serena managed that fine all by herself by her disgusting conduct on this occasion. This sort of behaviour would be nasty in a playground - it shows that Serena has not grown up from being the school bully character that she has displayed now on numerous occasions.

You have clearly lost the argument because all you can do is insult the posters who do nothing but describe conduct in a video which needs no explanation to any normal person. But you as a Serena apologist would clearly see her as a candidate for canonisation even if she had a collection of personally severed heads amongst all her trophies.

You can find the video of that interviews in Youtube with hundreds of comments and most people found Serena was hilarious. Except a few posters who came in with insults and racist comments. So It was clear that you are belong to the minority, not me.

It's not a surprise when people hate someone so much, they are blinded by hate and prejudice. For you to accuse Serena's " nasty", " disgusting bully", " has not grown up", are you able to know the meaning of those words? You are using a lot of " bullied words", way more than Serena who did nothing but laughing along with the reporters. You are the one who is using nasty words, a lot more than Serena ever did, then have the nerve to accuse people on that department. That is a fact.

I don't know Serena personaly and I actually have little similarities with her to be one of Serena's apologists. I simply think that it would be better to look in positive sides, rather than hating on anyone for no good reason. For you to insult someone who has no way to respond over a media, then being overly defensive when someone pointed it out.... Well, that action talks loudly by itself already.

I usually do not like out of blue moon bitchiness. And I criticize players, even my faves. But this was sooooo good... LOL Passionate bitchiness.

At least she got kicked back into the doghouse by Sveta in the next round :oh:

Graf also used to be a bit of a bitch........ When asked between the rivalry between her and Sabatini once, she commented that Sabatini had only won against her once, what Rivalry? or something in that line. I think she also commented that Martina was old and should retire at one stage too.

Evert could be a bitch too, not so much in what she said but the disdain she gave her opponents in her court manner, flared nostrils, a shake of the head. She knew she was better than most players and she just held herself in a precious way.

Navratilova was also queen bitch, often saying c'mon did you see that, re line calls and often trying to get the crowd on her side by waving her racket at them. I also saw an interview with her when asked about her rivals and she goes, yeah I surpassed all of em.

Sabatini had said maybe Steffi didn't feel like the number one player anymore and Steffi responded how would she know, she's never been number one.

After losing the 1992 Wimbledon final, Monica Seles said, "I am still the best player in women's tennis. Steffi will never be number one again." :worship:

To be honest I think that Maria "This is my home" comment was cute, not bitchy at all. You hardly ever see her acting like that. She always seems so guarded on the court.

If anything that bitchy moment with Petkovic where she was slagging Andrea off for her chicken dance was more bitchy on her part.

Graf and Sabatini? They're like 29-11... :help: There's a fine line between stating the fact and being arrogant.

You should sympathize with Evert, if not for Navratilova, most of 1980's was hers to take. Instead, she became Navratilova's bitch.

Navratilova surpassed all of them? She must be furious when Seles was stabbed back then.

Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova vs. Regina Kulikova at the AO in 2010

Epic! :haha:

There was a youtube clip of Strycova vs. Rezai from Luxembourg qualifying in 2009 which entailed a massive bitchfest after Barbora won the match. :p Sadly the video has been removed though.

And there's also Strycova vs. Huber. Liezel started complaining about Barbora in one of the US hard-court tournaments because she was claiming Barbora was imitating her during one of their matches.

Graf won their first 11 encounters, so did you think that the quote just may have been after Sabatinis first win? I remember reading it about 20 years ago or so and I never forget what i read:cool:

And Navratilova was Everts bitch throughout the 1970s and through all French Open tournaments:drool: Plus Everts Win loss ration was better than Navratilovas and any other male or female player in history for that matter

The quote of "the n#1 ranking" happened around the end of 1990 and 1991 when Gaby was winning regularly. Gaby's first win was in 1988 so I think the other one happened around then.
