@Imperfect Angel

So you think they're going to play Kutzie or Pav's vs Petra, or they may try both?

I hope this doesn't psyche out the Czech team, and make them think it's easy now. Russia still has some good players, who can play very well on any given day. Don't sleep!

PS: I see Vera would rather blow her shoulder out for the money and the points at YEC, than to preserve it for Fed Cup.

That's a little unkind. So would most top 10 players if it came down to it.

This is a big blow for the Russians. Not only is Vera their best singles player but she's a very handy doubles player as well. This weakens them in three rubbers.

I disagree. Vesnina has proven she's a handy doubles player, and her skill vs. Vera in doubles is extremely close.

The one thing going for Kirilenko is she really can fire up a crowd. Take a look at her match against Azarenka last year in Moscow. If she brings that fire, and keeps it close against Petra, the crowd could egg towards a possible upset.

Nice that Sveta won't play first, she'll be more calm and determined, I think, feeling less pressure

As a Petra fan, I'm almost more worried about MaKiri (whom I love as a player). She might have the best hands at net of any singles player on tour right now. She also has a game that is already predicated on craftiness, touch, and placement rather than power, so she won't be dismayed at Petra's superiority in the latter department. And she's relatively tough mentally. An overachiever who loves to pull the upset. Whereas Bepa would have been an even match, with a favorable H2H record against Petra, that would have been some extra motive for a much-improved Petra to beat her. I don't know MaKiri's H2H with Petra.

EDIT: OMG, just realized that Kiri is 1-0 against her, and that the only time they've played was at Wimbledon!

I just wish Li'l Masha had a better serve. She could be top ten if she did.

No , Kirilenko is 2-0 against PK. I was expecting her to pla yfor the reason of her having such a good H2H with Petra.

It's a smart choice as they can always switch her in the second match. Really who is expected to beat Petra? no one and someone has to play. Positive H2H against both Lucie and Petra makes sense to give her a shot.

If Slava was in the Russian team, she would help them a lot imho. She could make a great doubles team with Kirilenko.

Their 3-3 against each other now. Maybe Bepa was afraid to watch Petra take the lead, and lose 3 in row to her? :help:

As far as Makiri. We'll see. Petra's beat a lot of pushers recently. It could get ugly!!

Ahem. For starters I was joking. And I meant if they played Bepa both matches against Petra and she lost. That would total 3in a row. Right?

That's what I meant.

I think it's 2pm on Saturday and 12pm on Sun.

Appears to be a tape delay (though they called it live).

Last two outings she was a Semi-finalist in Linz and then semi-finalist in Moscow.

I think we can take the H2H with a pinch of salt since both matches were in 2009. Petra's a different prospect entirely now.

Why not Pavlyuchenkova in singles.....

While Pavlyuchenkova might seem to be the obvious choice, the Russians appear to have staked a lot on the ultra-slow court surface. Unfortunately, that surface might cause Pavlyuchenkova more problems than Kvitova (who has just beaten the best players in the World on Rebound Ace). I think they are hoping that Kirilenko might be able to come up with something. Also, Pavlyuchenkova doesn't appear to be in the greatest form at the moment, having lost 3 of her last 4 matches.

It does betray some uncertainty though when a player who wasn't originally in the team and who hasn't been selected to play a Fed Cup match since 2006 is suddenly promoted to play the opening singles rubber.

Pavs is not in the best of the moments, but neither is Sveta  I guess Kiri is the most in form player on the team. But what is the difference, if Petra is going to win both her matches anyway...

I don't see the point of all this secrecy from Russia
