Shuai is out of form, nothing like what she has shown this year that got her to this top ranking.

Hope she can enjoy her offseason and come back stronger just like last year :yeah:

can anyone explain to me on what merits this particular Golden Flower got her WC to this event? Why someone like Julia Goerges couldn't get one when she actually won a title this year and showed that she got what it takes to beat the best players out there?

Because they always gave one WC to an Asian player. :p

She got one maybe because she's Asian and like have a quite high rank, perhaps likeable in Indonesia as well?

BTW, just saw like there's not a big crowd like last year.:o

Just out of curiosity, and without wanting to particularly jump on the Peng-bashing bandwagon, does anyone know how WCs are awarded for this tournament? Is there any transparency, or can they basically do what they like? And who are "they" anyway: who decides this?

I dont understand this tournament. Goerges won Stuttgart beating Wozniacki & Stosur. She's not allowed.
If you win crappier tournbaments against weaker fields, you ARE allowed in.
Anyway, its a good spot for Nadia, who won several Premiers in her day

I think they are free to do what they want. They being the tournament organiser. But they have given one WC to an Asian player the three years of the tournament(Kimko 09-10, Peng)

Thanks. I'm surprised the other players don't protest, it doesn't exactly seem fair to theose like Julia who have worked so hard to get good results. I don't blame Peng, it wasn't her decision, and you can't really expect her to refuse the WC.

Yeah, because Ana being defending champion has no merit what so ever:spit:

And if you'd bothered to read the Bali thread, you'd know that there was much protest over both ladies. The difference is Ana actually made use of her WC and won her match.

I personally don't think either should have been given a WC, but it's not their fault that they were. My point was not to bring down either Ana nor Peng, it's just that on this thread Peng was being singled out. And given the fact that it is a tournament that is supposed to be based on results this year, there was really more merit to Peng's WC than Ana's. The fact that Ana "made use" of her WC is a good example of 20-20 hindsight, Peng has had the much better year of the two, so before the event she was the more logical choice. The fact is that the decision to award both WCs was based on economics: Peng to bring in the Chinese fans, Ana because she has a lot of fans who think she's hot, but you can't really blame either girl for that either.

Only here in TF all this nonsense crap talking about the Bali WC

They gave to Peng because she DESERVED it, playing the best year in her career , got to her highest rank and reached a Premier final, and also because she's an Asian definetely helped, people here love to moan about everything . And Ana got hers because she's one of the stars of the tour, glamour girl, defending champ and her matches last year were all FULL of people in the stands.

How can anyone bash Peng is just ridiculous, she's the sweetest girl :)

This thread is ridiculous...People acting like Peng's form has gone out the window...Her matches against Pennetta at the USO and Beijing were really freakin close...She lost to Bartoli in Tokyo who was hell bent on qualifying for the WTA Championships and she lost to Petrova in Bali...So, 2 losses means she all of a sudden sucks and will plummet down the rankings next year? LOL...That is crazy...Her cumulative year speaks for itself and shouldn't be judged so harshly because of 2 losses...Get a clue, seriously...Peng get set forv2012 and top 10

i understand that and think it's a fair point. but ivanovic certainly didn't get the same stick as peng (see also stromatolite's post). it's also typical for people on TF to blast a player for something she's not to blame for (the WC in this case) and scream abuse when there's absolutely no need.
