View Full Version : Changes in bonus points rewarding (a suggestion)

Since the game of tipping has been gaining in popularity in recent months and with it gaining in the number of players involved in each tournament, would you like a change to be made to the rule of bonus points distribution. The proposed idea is to reward 12 players with bonus points each time, instead of 8, so that the bonus point distribution looks like this:

Grand slams:
- 1st........200
- 2nd........150
- 3rd & 4th..100
- 5th - 8th...75
- 9th - 12th..40

Premier series:
- 1st........160
- 2nd........120
- 3rd & 4th...80
- 5th - 8th...60
- 9th - 12th..30

International series:
- 1st........120
- 2nd.........90
- 3rd & 4th...60
- 5th - 8th...45
- 9th - 12th..20

Looks like a great Idea.

I know, even from my experience, that being below 8th place before the final pick, sometimes makes me tip a non rational one, as I don't have much to loose.
With your suggestion, more players will think twice.

Exactly. But I'm also affraid that if we stick to 8 bonus points spots that players will start to lose interest, cause the vast majority of them will have an increasingly harder job getting to those bonus points. It wasn't that dificult to do it last year or two years ago, when we usually had about 25 players per tournament - now it's more like 45 battling for those same 8 spots. Nice to hear I'm not the only one who likes this idea:)

I don't like that... Just a feeling, maybe top 8 is more prestigious...

You might be right in a sense, but you know how hard it is these days to get to top8, even in an IS events - and it's for just 45 bonus points. If we want to really make it prestigious I think there should be more bonus points in question (but that's another issue, and if you'd like to propose this idea, feel free to open up a thread about it).

P. S. You forgot to vote;)

:oh:
am the only one to vote for 8 players...
I think we will have more fun and passion to this game because we need to fight and calculate (at some point) to reach top 8... But alright to have Top 12, but if you ask me, I will and have voted for Top 8

How about award 4, 8, 16 people depending on events/draws?

Maybe the bonus points shouldn't be a big hurdle to increase some interests in playing?

Grand Slams - 128 draws

1st: 256 pts.
2nd: 128 pts.
3rd-4th: 64 pts.
5th-8th: 32 pts.
9th-16th: 16 pts.

Premier Mandatory - 96 draws

1st: 128 pts.
2nd: 64 pts.
3rd-4th: 32 pts.
5th-8th: 16 pts.
9th-16th: 8 pts.

Premier Mandatory/Premier 5 - 56-64 draws

1st: 64 pts.
2nd: 32 pts.
3rd-4th: 16 pts.
5th-8th: 8 pts.

Premier - 56-64 draws

1st: 32 pts.
2nd: 16 pts.
3rd-4th: 8 pts.
5th-8th: 4 pts.

Premier - 28-32 draws

1st: 16 pts.
2nd: 8 pts.
3rd-4th: 4 pts.

International - 56-64 draws

1st: 16 pts.
2nd: 8 pts.
3rd-4th: 4 pts.
5th-8th: 2 pts.

International - 28-32 draws

1st: 8 pts.
2nd: 4 pts.
3rd-4th: 2 pts.

Coolfish that's an interesting idea, but I see some potential problems in it:

a) too complicated; managers even today make a mistake and post the wrong numbers for bonus points in the opening message; you can imagine how it would be with all this; not to mention poor Keisuke would get a few migrenes before he would tackle all the details

b) it makes some, particularly IS events, virtually meaningless; no one would bother playing for a few bonus points, especially if he/she realises there's no chance to win the event and qualify for the Tournament of champions.

However, I could see some less complicated version of your idea as something that could work. For example:

GS - 256, 192, 128, 96, (for 9-16) 64
PS - 192, 144, 96, 72, (for 9-12) 48
IS - 128, 96, 64, (for 5-8) 48

or

GS - 256, 192, 128, (for 5-8) 96
PS - 192, 144, 96, 72, (for 9-12) 48
IS - 128, 96, 64, 48, (for 9-16) 32

Grand slams:
- 1st........200
- 2nd........150
- 3rd & 4th..100
- 5th - 8th...75
- 9th - 12th..40

Premier series:
- 1st........160
- 2nd........120
- 3rd & 4th...80
- 5th - 8th...60
- 9th - 12th..30

International series:
- 1st........120
- 2nd.........90
- 3rd & 4th...60
- 5th - 8th...45
- 9th - 12th..20

Unfortunately I guess the bonus points will stay :sobbing: (I wanna them too :oh:).

So, I just wanna say if we increase number of players who receive bonus points, we should think about first 16 players - it's more natural than 12.

Don't you think 16 could make the game a bit too easy? Imagine, in a tournament with 40 players everyone has a 1:2.5 chance to get to bonus points. With 12 it would still be quite hard, but not really as hard as today with 8.

You can make it 16 people by making the last positions receive less points to solve that problem.

Yes, it does make things go complicated. How about a simplified version to save some work?

Grand Slams

1st : 320
2nd : 160
3/4 : 80
5-8 : 40
9-16: 20

Premier Mandatory/Premier 5

1st : 160
2nd : 80
3/4 : 40
5-8 : 20
9-16: 10

Premiers

1st : 80
2nd : 40
3/4 : 20
5-8 : 10

Internationals - Must win an Int'l tournament to participate in Tournament of Champions

1st : 40
2nd : 20
3/4 : 10
5-8 : 5

Longtin is reading my mind - most people would give up playing an IS event as soon as they'd figure out there's not much chance for them to win the title.

But if we would use a variation of coolfish's idea and reward varying number of players with bonus points, depending on category, we might get an interesting solution with minimal changes from today's format.

Example:

GS - 200, 150, 100, 75, 50 (16 players receive bonus points)
PS - 160, 120, 80, 60, 40 (12 players receive bonus points)
IS - 120, 90, 60, 45 (8 players receive bonus points i.e. no change)

Don't have to take my suggestions... not forcing people into one at all.

But my suggestions award more than 10 points to the top ranked players.

I agree with this formula that everyone else has settled to. It makes sense especially at a grand slam where it lasts around 12-13 days in tipping comp terms, so you really had to earn a Top 16 finish.
