I think this relates a little bit to the earlier thread on who are the best 5 players on tour at the moment. If I'm listing the 10 players I think are most likely, based on both current form and the upcoming points-totals of these women, I'd say Kvitova, Stosur, Serena, Azarenka, Sharapova, and Wozniacki are about the only "locks" for top 10 status. The first three have produced the best form of the second half of the season, and the other three were quite consistent year-round, no huge points-falls for any of them.

Of the other top-20 players, Li and Zvonareva are in trouble. Li has about 4000 points from just 3 events, and around 2000 of them are going to fall off before February. She could be out of the top 10 before clay season. Zvonareva has about 2250 points off before clay season starts, and she doesn't have any other stretch of the year where you look at her results from 2011 and think she can really improve in 2012. For a consistent player, she's deteriorating a bit too much to look likely to maintain her ranking.

Radwanska ended so strong, and she's got about 3500 points in the bank until Wimbledon's out. Bartoli's only got one big result until the week before the French, so she can solidify her rank a bit. I don't anticipate her defending her Strasbourg-Paris-Eastbourne-Wimbledon points to the same extent, though, so I don't see her staying top 10 for year end. Petkovic is disciplined and focused enough to keep rising, she'll not be a top 5er, but she'll be in that 6-10 range at year end, and be consistent with several deep runs at big events.

For the players who can work their way into the top 10, Serena's the only lock I can think of. So long as she plays her variation of a full schedule, she's very likely to get back into the top 10 and stay there. Hell, she almost made it off just 5 or 6 events THIS year.

SO, we've got Serena, Wozniacki, Azarenka, Sharapova, Stosur, Kvitova, Radwanska, and Petkovic in my top 10 list so far.

Of the next group down, who do I think can make it higher. Don't imagine Schiavone getting back into the top 10. She's got the vast bulk of her points to defend before grass season, and I don't picture her contesting big title. Kim's retiring soon. None of the "old" veterans are going to get back in (looking at you, Kuznetsova, Ivanovic, Jankovic, Hantuchova, Venus, Penetta, and Petrova!).

SO, really, which two up-and-comers are going to be in the top 10 at year end.

I'd say the shortlist is...Lisicki, Pavlyuchenkova, Peng, Cibulkova, Goerges, and then a few of the sub-20 range players who could have Petkovic-like rises. I'd say that's...Kerber, Hercog, Pervak, Begu.

Don't see any of those last four doing it, although if any of them made top 20, I'd believe it.

Of the five I've listed in the 15-21 range...
-Lisicki has the most explosiveness and consistency combined, and has the advantage of having virtually nothing to defend until after the French. Plus, she can take the game to anyone.
-Pavlyuchenkova isn't a first-strike player, and she doesn't have defense either. She's basically a poor-woman's Azarenka, and I don't picture her getting on any kind of monster run.
-Peng's rise has surprised me, and it's mostly been off of consistency and (to be honest) some good breaks in slam draws. She's not explosive enough to be a real top 10 threat.
-I would normally say Cibulkova's not consistent enough to be a top 10er, but she's an upset artist. She's always good for one top 10 win a month, and if she doesn't face top 10ers until later in tournaments, she'll probably have some deeper results. AND, doesn't have much to defend until Wimbledon.
-Goerges had one GREAT run, one very good run, a few good runs, and nothing else. She's just not a consistent player. It'll be interesting to see if she goes the Kvitova route and harnesses that explosive game to some modicum of consistency.

I'd say the top 10 will have Kvitova, Wozniacki, Azarenka, Stosur, Sharapova, S. Williams, Radwanska, Petkovic, Lisicki, and Cibulkova.

In THIS order:

1. Kvitova (wins 2 slams)
2. Wozniacki (wins 1 slam)
3. Stosur (wins 1 slam)
4. Azarenka (makes 1 slam final)
5. S. Williams (makes 2 slam finals)
6. Sharapova (makes 1 slam final)
7. Radwanska (2 slam semifinals)
8. Petkovic (makes a slam semifinal or two)
9. Lisicki (a few deep runs, including at 3 slams, a few early losses)
10. Cibulkova (few deep runs at big events, some big upsets at medium events)
