View Full Version : Has there ever been a REALLY unfortunate Tennis Year for you?

I'm still not over that I'll probably never see Golovin and Vaidisova, my absolute top faves, on a Tennis Court again. This year has been terrible too. My faves Bondarenko, Szavay and Bacsinszky ALL out of Top 100, even Top 200, this just sucks BIG time. Was there anything similar for you and your faves in the past? This is just terrible. I think I'm done with WTA as soon as Daniela retires. Really the only one standing next to Pavly but Pavly doesn't even come close to the likes of Nicole, Tatiana, Alona etc.

I honestly mean no disrespect, but Vaidisova and especially the Bondarenko sisters are all players that Ive wondered why would anyone really care to follow them? What made you such a big fan of those two in particular?

To answer your question, 1994 was the year for me. Martina Navratilova retired from singles, Conchita beat her in the wimbledon final, MOnica was still sitting on the sidelines after being stabbed the year before and Steffi was pretty much the hollow number 1. That was my dark year in tennis.

2008, I don´t know why, but I lost interest in WTA, I did not have any players to follow, I actually prefered ATP . But it passed and I´m into WTA again. BTW I loved 2011 (3 of my faves got slam title :bounce:)

I had a pretty good year as a fan :D Well, not the first half of the year. I'm a big fan of Lisicki and Stosur, and Sam was playing badly during the first half. But she rebounded in the 2nd half and won the US Open :woohoo: And you guys know Sabine's story, hope she can pull through next year! :D

2000. I was a happy, normal person. Okay, maybe not that happy or normal, since I was in the middle of a divorce and was a raving nasophile.

But tennis-wise, I was normal. I could watch tennis without it affecting my health, my drinking habits, feeling the need to post on message boards, look up pics and results on the Internet at all hours of the day, etc.

Then I saw this kind of goofy looking Russian kid with bangs...

10 years of misery and insanity. 10 fucking years of almosts and not quites. And I still adore the soul-crushing headcase. I will never recover from 2000.

As a devoted Tanasugarn fan 2005 & 2007 were the most difficult years.

2005 was crazy, because after reaching #19 year before she was out of the top 100, and had to qualify for Wimbledon in 2006. I really do feel like her run to the 3R through qualifying at Wimby is what saved her from retiring then. She was 28 or so,and the idea of her retiring was a very real possibility.

2007 was also a down year, she again fought injuries, and really I thought she would retire, especially after going 1-4 at the slams with her only win over Dellacqua at the French.

Once she won a title again in 2008, I knew she would solider on to at least 2012. I'm scared for next year though.

2011 wasn't great because neither Venus nor Serena played much. However, that didn't stop me from watching tennis, so I guess there have been no "unfortunate" tennis years for me.

Ugh I know what you mean. Every single day after coming back from school or during weekends right after waking up, hoping to see some positive news...when all you got were withdrawal updates. Absolute torture for a Pova fan.

Coincidentally, the doodle "I'm coming back in Warsaw!!" was released on the same day as my mother's birthday. :) I was over the moon.

Great! I'm in that group too then. If what you said was a true, Linguae and I wouldn't even be bothered to follow WTA, we would've followed ATP, it's obviously a less painful choice for Serbian nationalists. Now it's suddenly wrong to support the players from your own country or what?! You're not a true tennis fan if you do that?! I love Ana and JJ, and if those two headcases didn't make me hate this sport, I guess I really love it.

You're doing great, ExtremespeedX, not even 100 posts, but you're showing a great potential, my crystal ball says that your chances to make a great result in that TWAT slam are bigger and bigger after every post you write.

2007 three straight losses to Henin, for Serena...in Grandslams! (Though Wimbledon shouldn't count as a legitimate victory since Serena was injured) Those losses were Just terrible at least in their next match-up in Miami Serena took her apart.

2008 was simultaneously the best and worst tennis year. First half was amazing as a fan of the Serbian girls. Ana with AO final, IW title, FO and numero uno. JJ with the AO Semi, IW Semi, FO Semi. All was well.

Until...

After that faitful Wimbly loss, things turned up side down. Ana losing her mind (well, her toss), JJ and Ana at odds (again. Though it was more JJ than Ana).
Alas came the fall of my fave. Ended the year on a high note by winning a title, but it was all down hill from there.

Oh, and the year Momo retired 09 or 2010:scratch: My all time fave, gone from the sport. It was rough. I'm just so happy I actually got to meet and speak with her before it was all over:sad:

Ouch...better get used to them.

2009 and 2010 were both pretty dire, but I have actually enjoyed quite a bit of 2011.

2002 completely broke my heart, I really thought Martina would be back soon though & I enjoyed 2003/2004/2005 for various reasons.
At the time I thought 2004 was a bit weak but in retrospect, lots of memorable matches.

2007 angered me, the Hingis debacle.

Not sure which was worse, 2002 or 2007.

Probably 2010.

The way in which I follow tennis (thoroughly and obsessively) leads me to waste my time watching a lot of televised matches I know I won't enjoy, and in the late season of 2010, with the tennis world crushed under the jackboot of Princess Karolina's Reign of Terror, ES broadcasting the Vulture Swing in its full horror and then the Doha YEC trainwreck, I was growing increasingly bored and jaded.

In the last days of December, I realised that I simply wasn't looking forward to the new season. I was sick of the same old bridesmaids and hoggers that made up the ranks of the fraudulent "top" players of the time, and for faves I had nothing but a handful of fun midranked bashers who were unlikely to be on TV more than 2-3 times a year.

But then I woke up earlier than expected one Saturday morning. Dragged myself to my PC, noticed that the Brisbane final, featuring one of those fun midranked bashers, was about to start, launched a livestream, and the rest, as they say, is history.
