The Austin-Madruga semi was a 2hr. 50 minute roller coaster that had it all, incluging veteran umpire Lea Jackson warning Madruga's father against coaching. Austin seemed to be bothered by the TV broadcasters, a helicopter, "and a surprisingly pro-Madruga crowd". She snapped when a call in her favor was reversed at 4-3 30-30, slamming a ball into the backdrop in anger and walking to the chair to protest "after 25 minutes, no way". The point was replayed-Austin held, and she barely ekked through.

By entering the ladies doubles Maria Bueno and Rosie Darmon both entered slams in 4 decades (50s to 80s).

Evert had unexpected trouble with two teens in her quest for the title. 16 year old Bettina Bunge had her at 6-4 3-1 in R3 before losing, and in the semis (played in 100 deg. heat) Mandlikova won the first set. Bettina was close to winning as she served an ace to go up 3-1, but Evert broke her back in gusty conditions. Bunge fought off 3 set points at 4-5 before Chris finally got on top for good. Nerves were evident in the 3rd as Evert fought through her toughest win of the fortnight.

Martina's shock defeat on a windy day is her earliest exit from an event since March of 1977. 34 year old Stove was subdued after her win, stating "One sunny day does not make a summer. She's still the best in the world and I am slowly sinking down the list. As long as I can serve well, I can just about bend low enough to dig the ball out." Austin was down 1-6 0-3 before coming back in the quarters. Every one of the 6 Austin-Mandlikova encounters has gone 3 sets. Austin's win makes her a 2-1 betting favorite to win Wimbledon. It was a stark contrast to earlier in the week, when Martina said she didn't see how she could lose on grass unless she had "a physical mishap. I will not cave in mentally."

Speaking of Evonne, women's tennis guru called the ventual winner at Mahwag, "The most nuturally gifted atlete since Evonne." Besides collecting prize money Hana also took home a Volvo car and a red fox coat. Andrea praised Hana afterwards, calling her serve "the best I've ever played. Virginia Wade or Martina Navratilova if it's deuce or close, will just try to get it in. Hana will go for the ace .....and usually gets it." The combined age of the girls (33) set a record as the youngest ever major final. Jaeger sets another youngest record by becoming the youngest top tenner ever on the computer. She shocked Austin in a 2hr. 17 min match, coming behinf from 2-4 in the third.

The first ever women's only Aussie Open, held the week before the men's event. Big time prize money of US $200,000 brought the best field in years Down Under. The big crowds the ladies attracted led to the 1981 event also being separate.

Winner Mandlikova claimed the final in 52 minutes, winning a Toyota car with her first prize check. It is her first of 4 slams.

Runner up Wendy Turnbull blasted the top women for accepting guarantee money to play, citing Evonne Goolagong in particular. "I don't think anyone should get any form of guarantee to come here and play", the "Rabbit" said. The pregnant Evonne was an upset victim of Mima Jausovec in round two.

There were at least 32 foreign entries, the first time foreigners have outnumbered native Aussies.

Landover, Maryland, 7-11 January 1981

The 1980 year actually extended into early-the year ending championships coming after the Aussie Open and before the start of the indoor tour.

Format: Double elimination round robin with single elimination semis and final.

1st round:
Navratilova d. Turnbull 6-2 6-4, Austin d. Ruzici 60 63
Mandlikovad. Jaeger 75 63, Evert d. Shriver 64 62

2nd round:
Austin-Mandlikova 63 60, Jaeger-Ruzici 3-6 6-2 7-6
Turnbull-Shriver 75 75, Navratilova-Evert w.o.

Elimination round: Jaeger d. Evert default,Turnbulld. Mandlikova 46 63 63

Semifinal
Austin d. Turnbull 6-2 6-1
Jaeger d. Navratilova 6-4 4-6 6-1

Final Austin-Jaeger 62 62
3rd Place: Turnbull d. Navratilova 1-6 7-5 6-2

Doubles
SF
Reynolds/P. Smith d. K. Jordan/A. Smith 6-3 1-6 6-4
Casals/Turnbull d. Stove/Shriver 6-4 6-4

Final Casals/Turnbull d. Reynolds/P.Smith 6-3 4-6 7-6

Considered to be the last event of 1980 Evert withdraws with a high temperature. Jaeger makes the final after surviving a match point (and elimination) vs. Virginia Ruzici. After winning the final Austin lays claim to #1 with "two majors to one" over Evert. Austin was counting the Avon and Colgate as majors while discounting Evert's win at the French. The computer and most experts saw it differently, and Evert finished as #1 in most minds.

I'm confused with all the number of exhibition status tournaments, not only in 1980 but in other years too. Some, such as the Lion's Cup appear to be universally recognised and counted amongst players titles, but others such as the Gunze tournament seem to only be sometimes recognised and not others. Does anyone have any insight into why this is? Thanks
