This week Petra Kvitova proved she is the real deal to win the year end championships and Wimbledon places her in my mind as the dominant force. In 2012, I hope Petra can build and take over the WTA tour. Women's tennis NEEDS a dominant number one someone that can WIN the slams and the big tier I events. It is so NICE to see a young player from the next generation FINALLY live up to her potential. And to think at the beginning of the year Petra wasn't even in the top 30. Her rise is just incredible.

If only she made the 3R at USO, she would've been #1.

Yeah the US OPEN result was disappointing but I like that Petra came back and won Linz and the WTA Championships that shows she's for real. She is improving mentally and physically this victory will give Petra a ton of confidence. Petra knows she's the best she has all the weapons to dominate women's tennis.

Well she is the youngest with the most potential.

Hopefully she doesn't let the pressure get to her

Petra will never be a dominating player. She will have flashes of greatness, but hindered. Much like Pierce imo.

It would be boring if we have one dominant tennis player... better 2 dominant like in the past Seles-GRaf or if not dominant then few consistent player...anyway ANYTHING apart from tennis from the last few years...

I like that Petra got over her slump after winning Wimbledon and won huge titles this shows us a lot about her. Petra is improving at an amazing rate.

Really ? A player able to play brilliant tennis for 20 minutes and then terrible tennis for the next 20 minutes ? A player able to win Wimbledon and then disappear for 3 months, losing first round in NY ? That's the player who gonna save WTA ?

WTA is in deep shit. Kvitova is part of Generation Suck, she's just the one who sometimes doesn't suck for some moments.

I think you are forgetting the end result Petra WON that's what matters! Look at Wozniacki she can't even WIN a slam or the YEC she is such a disgrace to women's tennis.

The MEDIA certainly don't respect Caroline she just doesn't got the mental toughness or weapons to be a champion.

YES Petra has SAVED women's tennis BECAUSE a young player WON Wimbledon the jewel of the sport and WON big titles such as the YEC!

What has Wozniacki done beside lose in big matches all year? Wozniacki has A LOT to prove in 2012!

Who talked about Wozniacki ? Sure if you compare Petra with Woz, she'll look like GOAT. But stop acting like Petra had a stellar year. It is wrong. She had too many weird losses and won her two big titles in a year when the best players (Serena and Kim) were hampered by injuries and health problems. She still have things to prove.

Sorry to say this but you are talking b*****ts.. How come Kvitova can be a better player from Pierce?!
Pierce won RG plus 2x she played the final, won Australian Open, was runner up at the US Open...
Wimbledon is not everything in tennis just because it has tradition it doesnt mean that its the top of the top...

And you should stop acting like Wozniacki had a great year! Petra WON Wimbledon she beat Sharapova and Azarenka she EARNED her first slam! She also won the YEC.

Wozniacki still has NOT WON a grand slam she didn't even reach a slam final this year!

You want to talk about weird losses what about Wozniacki losing to Christina McHale and Roberta Vinci! Wozniacki also LOST in the third round of the French and fourth round of Wimbledon.

Caroline also has NOT beaten Clijsters BUT Petra did she beat Clijsters to win the title in Paris this year!

So give me a break we both know Petra had the superior season!

I think Laura Robson is slowly developing into a Kvitova-like player. She is just as talented.

I think Petra has a chance to be the new saviour of the WTA! Wozniacki and Azarenka have been promising much for, what, 2 or 3 years now? Yet no big titles at all from them. I think what we have seen from Petra this year is great progress and improvement. What concerns me about Caroline is she has not improved her game at all! She still has a weak forehand and lacks aggression. She wins because she is probably the best mentally strong and tactically sound player since Hingis (although Radwanska was the most Hingis-like this week. Using her brain and tireless running far better than Caroline.)
While Vika looked good, that Bartoli shambles did her damage I think. She has improved her game, but her problems have always been in her head - a total emotional basket case for years. That looks to be something she HAS improved, but I am not sure she has the weapons to win the slams.
Stosur is older I know, but I think this has been a pretty huge year for her too. The USO win and the manner of it - she wiped the floor with Serena! - showed that the huge strength and talent when paired with self belief can make her a genuine contender.
Will Sharapova EVER recapture her top form? We seem to have been talking about her comeback for about 3 years now. Her shoulder niggles have fatally damaged her serving confidence IMO, but she has the will to win.
I love Petkovic's game - the all action energy of it is a lot of fun. She has come on so well in the last year - top 10 player, but can she move her game up another notch? Not sure.
Undoubtedly Petra has the biggest weapons on the tour since Serena, her challenge is to find some consistency without losing that exciting power game. She WINS matches as opposed to Wozniacki who wins by making fewer errors than her opponents in seems.

This is it: power tennis is gonna make womens game look like this from now on. And that means that the players need to unwind a little bit during a match. It is no longer realistic for you to expect a modern power player to be at her best in every set of a match. The game has changed. The days of Monica Seles are OVA.

Hey, what the hell is up with the Pierce hate in this thread? Don't you dare mess with Mary! :ras:

I do agree that Petra has moments of brilliant tennis, and certainly has all the weapons required to be a #1. I just love the fact that she's able to close points at the net.

In the end, she's entertaining to watch, and that's what may be able to save the Tour. We watch tennis to have fun, not to criticize it and be bored to death..

The catchphrase "save women's tennis" has no meaning and is mindlessly parrotted out again and again like those "I must kill ... " zombies you see in movies. The two players who won the most tournaments this year and are #1 and #2 in the rankings couldn't have a more different style and that's great to see. The more variety and the more we can see players with differring games and strengths and not all playing the same way - the more interesting it is to me.

Agreed! Too many WTA matches feature grunting little terriers, throwing rackets if they miss a shot. Volleys, drop shots, net play ....VARIETY is what I love to watch. I want to go 'wow' at the end of a point, either for a spectacular winner or even a comical error. Not just go 'Hmm, she ground out that point well.' Unimaginative baseline play is dull to watch. I love Kvitova's game.

Petra has a lot of potential. I hope she spends this off-season wisely to reflect and enjoy the success from this past year and realize that dominance is attainable if she puts in the work. She really needs to work on diet and fitness so that she can maximize her potential. More importantly even, she needs to work on her Plan B tactics and how to mentally recognize what is and what is not working on the court; so often these lapses in concentration lead to barrels of errors.

I foresee Petra of 2012 continuing to play peak tennis on grass and indoors, even on clay when she has more time to prepare. But I do see her continuing to struggle on the bevvy of outdoor hard courts at least in the near future - she has difficulty finding her strokes. But it would be great to see improvement compared to some of her lackluster results this year, most noticeably the USO collapse.

The sad fact is you don't have to be that consistent or that good to be a dominant player in today's WTA.

Petra's looking to be a step up, but she's not going to make anyone forget Serena or Steffi or even Lena's bangs.

Well congrats to Kvitty for bein a no.1 for 0 weeks and a great fight to get to the second place (props to Maria for withdrawal with ankle injury too ;) )

Much better than Caroline's 54 weeks as a no.1, ranking which Kvitova could not challenge all year despite winning the "best" tournaments :oh:

I Fan Petra & I also Fan Of Caro, Vika, Aggie,Petkovic. I like to see All five Achieve alot and Have Rival (Not in a Bad Enemy way) But like the Williams Sister done in the past with Hingis,Davenport,Kim, and so on. I like to see Pavlyuchenkova, Vera, & JJ also get in the Mix of the titles and hopefully JJ & Vera Can Still get them a Slam, & Pavlyuchenkova Should soon have her Breakthrough Year.
