according to Mats Wilander, Wozniacki merely consistent...

"The ranking is the result of not necessarily being the best player in the world it's the result of being the most consistent player in the world,"

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/29102011/58/wilander-wozniacki-merely-consistent.html

If you replace "Mats Wilander" with "everyone ever," then, yes, we've had roughly 1639326926492649246 threads on this topic. Give or take.

But thanks for the new one! :yeah:

What is Caroline supposed to do? The angst should be directed to the points system, the players that only play when it suits them, or ignored. It isn't her fault and the constant sniping is now getting tedious.

Eurosport were beating this dead horse for a while now. The only time when they actually believed Woz can be #1 on merit was when she won Tokyo/Beijing last year. But during this season they really seemed uneasy with her being #1 again in wake of her much worse results than 2010. Last year they've underlined she doesn't need a GS to be #1, but the monkey has became really heavy this season and it's not going away.

The only consolation is that she'll be replaced by an actual champion pretty soon (Kvitova), and not by another opportunistic hack (Sharapova).

dont look at Eurosport for real analysis. they cant keep defending a consistent opinion, even if it was right, because that makes boring tv. they just want to create something new to talk about so they need to keep changing it to keep the audience interested.

Wozniacki is not the most consistent player in the World. That is yet another myth. Azarenka is by far more consistent. She isnt losing to many of the scrubs Wozniacki is. Wozniacki with her questionable (at best) #1 ranking is always protected by cushy draws so she doesnt say draw Serena Williams in the 3rd round of a slam.

Yes this title is true. Wozniacki never was, clearly is not, and never will be the best player in the World. During every moment of her time ranked #1 there was always people considered better than her, even during the brief spell she might have deserved the #1 ranking on merit of results of the past 12 months (say the April-July period of this year) she was still never considered the best. However I am pretty sure her time ranked #1, even with the current mess of a WTA, and the current badly flawed ranking system, will end forever in early 2012. Her career has already peaked, and it is all downhill from here. That isnt even really a prediction since the downhill started in May, and that truck has only steamed that direction since.

Well it will be a very long winter for Wozniacki in her fans, other than time spent on court which will likely be brief for Wozniacki.

My favorite commentator line this week has been "Kvitova - a future number 1" when they want to highlight her prospects. I'm like are you f*king kidding me. "Future multiple GS champion" would make a lot more sense. As if the #1 ranking hasn't become more of a shame and embarrassment these last few years.

I blame Henin for punking out of the Tour back in 2008. I remember that she waited until the week Sharapova reached #2 as she didn't want to hand it to Ivanovic, a player that had never beaten her, but it was inevitable that the #1 would eventually fall in unworthy hands.

The thing is, I can't think of a single player right now who'd deserve the number 1 ranking. Kvitova comes close, but even she hasn't been consistent enough.

I wouldn't have a problem with Caro being number 1 if it wasn't for that annoying Turkish airlines ad. Caro is one of the weakest nr 1 ever, yet she seems to go on about it way more than the other players who were 1 before her.

It's a weak era. In previous eras, the future number 1s were young upstarts who were beating the top players. Federer was the one to beat Sampras at Wimbledon, it was a changing of guards. Sharapova upset Serena at Wimbledon, the Williams sisters were beating Martina, Justine and Kim could beat the sisters, etc. Caro didn't make it to number 1 by beating the sisters or the Belgians. And that makes it difficult to see her as a credible successor. But it's not her fault the previous top is sizzling out.
The WTA needs another young upstart to cause havoc.

If you knew how the draws worked, you'd know that players seeded 25-32 get randomly drawn against players seeded 1-8 in the round of 32 (third round). Azarenka just happened to be the unlucky one to draw Serena. It could just as easily have been Kvitova, Li, or Wozniacki. Or Bartoli for that matter.

Tipping Kvitova as a "future #1" is the equivalent of saying "Kvitova: future Cincinnati champion" -- quite possibly accurate, but irrelevant and arbitrary seeing as she already has bigger fish to fry (contending for Slams).

 Iirc, Henin's retirement announcement came pretty much precisely after Ivanovic had lost her first-round match in the tournament played that week, thus ensuring she wouldn't rise to #1 after Henin was removed.

Sure if you believe the ATP and WTA draws are completely random. Like how Djokovic and Federer have ended up in the same half as every non French for over 3 years now. :tape:

Let's see who Wozniacki played at the US Open:

1R Unseeded Llagostera Vives (since Wozniacki is a seed, she can't face another seed until 3R)
2R Unseeded Arantxa Rus
3R #29 seed Jarmila Gajdosova (she faced the seed, so it's not as though she got a cushy draw here)
4R #15 seed Kuznetsova (again she faced the higher seed, so again no evidence of a cushy draw. Or rould you rather she have faced #13 Peng?)
QF #10 seed Petkovic (it's not Wozniacki's fault that #6 seed Li lost in the first round!)

Caro loses before the QFs in half her tournaments (even if these results are covered up by her 'best 16') so she's definitely not the best player in the world. But right now I don't think anyone is. Kvitova chose to mug it up after Wimbledon. She just needed to win a couple more matches after Wimbledon and she would be #1 :mad:/
