Eminem's 8 Mile races to No 1

Eminem's debut movie has gone straight in at number one in the US box office charts.

The rapper's semi-autobiographical movie 8 Mile took $54.5 million (about 35 million) in its first weekend.

It was the second-best opening ever for an R-rated film behind Hannibal, which debuted last year with $58 million.

The big debut and strong results for holdover films lifted the overall box office. The top 12 movies grossed $133.8 million, up 15% over the same weekend last year.

Last weekend's No 1 movie, The Santa Clause 2, slipped down to second place with $24.8 million.

The weekend's only other new wide release, Brian De Palma's crime thriller Femme Fatale, opened weakly at No 9 with $2.8 million.

The top was completed by horror thriller The Ring at number three, I Spy , which stars Eddie Murphy, at number four and Jackass: The Movie at number five.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding slipped out of the top five to number six in the US box office charts.

I saw the Ring and it sucked. I should have gone to 8 Mile instead.
